Stability analysis for time-dependent nonlinear systems. An interval approach

    No full text
One of the most important issues in control is determining the stability of a system. Since the 1960’s, Lyapunov-based methods have been developed to determine the stability of linear and nonlinear systems. However, when the system is nonlinear, time-dependent and uncertain, in a set-membership context, stability analysis is challenging and no reliable methods have been developed. This paper proposes an original set-membership based approach for establishing the stability of non-linear, uncertain, time-dependent systems. Two new concepts G-Stability (which is the stability of nonlinear time-dependent uncertain trajectories) and capture tubes (which is an invariant stability region for time-dependent systems) are introduced and illustrated for an autonomous, uncertain, robotic sailboat. Then, G-Stability is used to formulate and prove the safety for a set of capture tubes. This result is then used to analyse the safety of a squad of uncertain, robotic sailboat moving in their environment (no collision among the robots)

Since 2010, Greece has experienced an unprecedented economic and humanitarian crisis, which continues to have tremendous social impact. Austerity measures and policy cuts have included a dis-investment in social work and social care and more recently the abolition of one of the four national Social Work Departments providing qualifying social work education. In this context, this study addresses the following question: how does pre-qualifying social work education in Greece influence students’ ability to manage value tensions in relation to anti-oppressive practice? Using a case study methodology, the research was based in one Social Work Department (subsequently abolished). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews from social work students at two points in their professional education (n=32) and once from academic staff/placement supervisors (n=10). Data were analysed drawing on grounded theory techniques. In this paper only one particular dataset is considered in detail: the attitudes and experiences of final year students. The main findings indicate students’ narrow understandings and individualistic approaches towards oppression, reflecting an urgent need to redefine social work education and practice in Greece according to current social justice concerns. Specifically, social work education needs to give greater weight to a structural perspective on the dynamics of oppression

Ecologies of educational reflexivity and agency – a different way of thinking about equitable educational policies and practices for England and beyond?

    No full text
The current UK education policy for Englandemphasis on equity and social mobility focuses on narrowing the educational attainment gap between more and less advantaged groups of young people – an approach that has strong parallels in many Anglophone countries around the world. We argue that these policy and associated practice proscriptions tend to privilege an individualised narrative of agency for young people, teachers and schools more generally. Our paper argues that this individualised approach is highly problematic in that it decontextualizes the complex and real agentic work of young people in schooling, making it difficult to empirically and theoretically account for differences in educational outcome between and within groups of young people. Informed by a social realist perspective, and in particular the work of Margaret Archer, we propose a theoretical model that we suggest provides greater explanatory and predictive power. The model focuses on the way ecologies of development emerge for young people. We suggest that such ecologies reflect different structural and cultural factors and processes, combining in ways that enable and/or constrain young people’s educational reflexivity and agency and their ensuing educational engagement and attainments. We believe that building a typology of such ecologies of educational reflexivity and agency provides improved ways of developing equitable educational policies and practice - ones that relate clearly to the compositional mix of young people in schools and enable the development of interventions that better relate to such ecologies

The article presents the main trends of gender-terms in sectoral collective bargaining in urban regions of Argentina. It is based on a wide range of data, drawn from the survey of collective strategies and ways of building demands carried out in agreements, semi-structured interviews, and the data produced in workshops attended by activists, militants, and union leaders. Progress will be made in the description of the main areas of demands (wage gap, violence and care) establishing the obstacles, the challenges, as well as the stray collectives of women organized in trade unions.

The main goal of this study is to understand the practices and management of technological production of the hunter-gatherer groups that inhabited the Tapalqué creek basin (Olavarría, Buenos Aires). The results of the techno-morphological analysis of the lithic assemblage from the Laguna Blanca Chica site are presented and discussed. Also, the function of a chert accumulation in a shallow lake (possibly a cache or knapping locus) is assessed. The different stages of the operational chains were reconstructed to identify technological practices and recognize the knapping techniques (debitage, façonnage, and retouch) involved in the production processes of the lithic artifacts. The raw material more frequently used is chert, followed by orthoquartzite with a wide range of colors. In smaller proportions, silica, quartz, silicified dolomite, limestone, and granitoid rocks are also present. Results reveal certain differences in the treatment of the main tool stones, which are reflected in varying technological activities and in the modes of tool manufacture.

    No full text
In this article we seek to shift the angle of analysis towards the ways in which Argentine workers, through their union and political organizations, received, processed and offered programmatic responses to the unquestionable opening moment of the turbulent decade of the 1930s: the crash of the New York stock exchange in October 1929. The article is structured in three sections: in the first, we will address the readings that were made about the immediate impact of the crisis in October 1929, its causes and global explanations; in the second, we will focus on the analysis of its consequences, focusing not only on the voices referring to the local repercussions (for example, those related to the problem of unemployment) but also on the global echoes awakened by the crisis; finally, we will focus on the programmatic elaborations that they put forward as a response to the crisis and on the identification of the dense international network that influenced those interpretations and that linked the local labor movement with global structures. This is based on a large and varied body of documentation that includes national newspapers, party documents, and union sources, among others.
