Education by means of Japanese traditional performing arts―Toward fostering the Japanese fundamental culture―
Get PDFIn the present treatise we intend to analyze and discuss our approach to apply Japanese traditional performing arts in the fi eld of education and, in so doing, search for a form of education which would help foster the fundamental Japanese culture in students.
The traditional performing arts taken up here rather aim at being taught as educational values (while the Japanese culture is drawn out to help build up a person’s personality and independence) than mere transmission of the skills involved. In other words, they aim at being the latent power to build a cultural basis in each person.
Such education would greatly contribute to the formation of an identity as the Japanese that is apt to be scarcely emphasized today. Because it has direct bearings on the spirits of the Japanese traditional culture, it would bring us confi dence and independence acquired from the form and physical style in each art.
In the present treatise we first determine why we aim at the education by means of Japanese traditional performing arts today. Secondly, the educational values in the traditional performing arts are explored by analyzing the Japanese culture in each art and learning the form, physical style, and methodology of each expert in the performing arts. Application of microdialysis to rat myocardium
Get PDFMicrodialysis has been developed as a technique to collect biological substances continuously through a semipermeable membrane under physiological conditions with a probe attached on various animal organs. The heart, however, presents several difficulties in the application of this technique, because the heart is beating in vivo in contrast to other organs. I developed a flexibly mounted microdialysis probe technique, which involves synchronized movement of the tip of the probe with the beating heart to reduce tissue injury. With this technique, it
become feasible to make stable and long-term measurements of interstitial biological fl uid substances. By appling the flexibly mounted microdialysis probe technique to the beating rat heart, I was able to monitor free radical generation and measure the level of adenosine during AMP perfusion that gives an index of the activity of ecto-5’- nucleotidase in the tissue. High intensity all-out exhaustive exercise enhances taste sensitivity to sour but not to sweet compounds.
Get PDFSensitivity of taste sensations following exercise has been the focus of several studies with the outcomes somewhat equivocal and seemingly dependent on the type, duration, and intensity of exercise. Very few studies have looked at the infl uence of high intensity all-out exhaustive exercise on taste sensitivities and the purpose of present study was to assess the infl uence of this high-level of exercise on sensitivity to sweet and sour compounds. Four healthy young adult males and one female (mean ± SD: 23.2 ± 5.5 yrs) served as subjects. The exercise load was set to 80% of the maximal workload. The exercise trials required the subject to pedal an ergometer at the prescribed load until exhaustion, rest for three minutes, and then repeat this load until exhaustion again. Taste sensitivities to six levels of concentrations of sweet (sucrose) and sour (citric acid) compounds were assessed by the triangle test method before and after (10 mins.) completing the exercise. Each subject repeated the exercise on five separate occasions. The distinction rate for each compound concentration for each subject was calculated using inverse sine transformation. The derived sensitivity values were then analyzed by two way repeated measures ANOVA. The sensitivity to sucrose was not affected by exercise (p>0.05), nor was any interaction evident between the sucrose concentrations and exercise (p>0.05). However, sensitivity to citric acid was affected by the exercise (F1,4=14.09, P<0.02) with a much higher level of sensitivity following exercise. We believe that these outcomes provide additional direction for further study on the impact of exercise on specifi c taste sensitivities.departmental bulletin pape

A practice of consumer education during the course of home economics in primaryschools ―Some aspects of consumer education in association with food education―
Get PDFThis paper is intended to clarify some aspects of daily life-conscious consumer education, especially in association with food education given during the course of home economics in primary schools.
Firstly, we consider the possibility of teaching consumer education associated with food education. Food education includes all aspects of eating behaviors. There are a lot of scenes where consumers require “capabilities to decide, choose, and judge”. Here, we take up scenes of food education where we point out an exquisite parallelism
between food education and daily life-conscious consumer education.
Secondly, we pay our attention to the stage of development of the child called “childhood”, and we give an example where we consider consumer education timely there. Also, in this respect, we re-examine problems lying in the actual life situation of today’s children in relation to expected consumer education, and deepen our consideration to provide consumer education from a new viewpoint.
Thirdly, we pay attention to the mutual relation between consumer education and food education. We point out that the past consumer education hitherto performed to bring up “smart consumers” resulted in food education to bring up “smart eaters” unexpectedly. Conversely, we could expect a lot of examples in which we are able to bring up “smart consumers” through food education.
Fourthly, we could set up a model of processes from production to consumption in which children can experience part of the processes in their lives, and study and analyze data obtained from consumer education performed there.

A Whartonian Ghost Story ― Ambiguities in “The Lady’s Maid’s Bell”
Get PDF“The Lady’s Maid’s Bell” is the first ghost story written by Edith Wharton. It is full of ambiguities because of the narration of the “unreliable” heroine. Dyman writes: “Wharton incorporated many of the confl icts of her life into her fi rst ghost story”(14), and “Behind her lay a stifl ed childhood, failed romances, entry into an unhappy marriage, and years of debilitating illness”. “The Lady’s Maid’s Bell” resonates with echoes from these circumstances (11). More importantly, though this is one of the stories written in the early stage of her writer career,the peculiar themes of Wharton’s works, “sexuality” and “shadow(double)”, can be found in this fi rst ghost story.departmental bulletin pape
