Thyroid hormone-inducible semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) in rat brain cytosol
The present study was examined that modulators of semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO; EC 1.4.3.6.) might be present in the brain cytosol and looked for changes in SSAO modulatory activity in brain cytosol. An endogenous inhibitor of SSAO (ESI) was separated by gel filtration from 105,000 g supernate of thyroxine (T4)-treated rat brain cytosol. The inhibition by this inhibitor withSSAO activity for 1 µmol/L benzylamine was concentration dependent. The mode of inhibition was competitive with benzylamine. The molecular weight of this inhibitor was estimated to be 600-700 by gel filtration. The pI value of ESI was determined by isoelectric focusing (IEF)-gel electrophoresis to about 3.6. SSAO inhibition activity was much lower in the cytosol of thyroidectomized, non-T4-treated rats than T4-treated rats, suggesting that this inhibitor is induced by thyroid hormone. SSAO activity in rat brain might be regulated by the level of this inhibitor. The results indicate that this inhibitor in T4-treated rat brain cytosol and that the level of this inhibitor is regulated by thyroid hormone.departmental bulletin pape
The views to life and death that be inherent among the elderly persons in New Zealand -In comparison to the views life and death among the elderly persons in Japan-
departmental bulletin pape
History of Japanese popular music -A study on the nearly one century time after the Meiji Era-
In this paper, the author discusses development processes of popular music (including foreign numbers) in Japan over the period of nearly one century after the end of Meiji Era. He tried to include in his study materials as many songs as possible, which represent respective periods of time.
During the Pacifi c War, the style of popular music in Japan was severely restricted under militarism. Therefore, the political environment entirely changed from the prewar days. As a result, popular music in Japan has also completely changed. People can fully enjoy all kinds of popular music now.
He makes clear that, in the history of popular music, there are relationships closely influenced by political environment, economic fluctuation, internationalization, change in people’s interest, and progress in the media world of the time.departmental bulletin pape
A Study tour in New Zealand~Focusing on Hutt City, a sister city of Minoh~
We took a study tour to New Zealand in order to learn about their general education, food education, and health care facilities for the aged. In Hutt City, a sister city of Minoh City, we visited an elementary school and a facility for the elderly. In Auckland, we joined in a meeting of Japanese mothers who emigrated from Japan, and then a Japanese Supplementary School. Overall, the trip proved instructive, suggested how faculty members could make multidisciplinary interactions, and gave hints about our future research projects.departmental bulletin pape
Occupational health in the corporate social responsibility (CSR) among Japanese companies
The aim of the present study was to clarify an association between the prevalence of Raynaud’s phenomenon in workers using an impact wrench and the effect of various countermeasures to prevent adverse health effects of vibration over a period of 27 yr. The subjects were 704 workers who were regularly using an impact wrench and taking special medical examinations for vibration syndrome in a factory from 1981 to 2008. Practical countermeasures, such as improvement of an apparatus and control of working conditions, were taken twenty times. There were 39 subjects with Raynaud’s phenomenon at least one time during the observation period. The prevalence of Raynaud’s phenomenon decreased after introduction of the improved impact wrench. Thereafter, the prevalence of Raynaud’s phenomenon remained to be about 2–5 % although various countermeasures were taken to keep the working environments warm, reduce the working time, and improve other working conditions. These fi ndings showed that it is necessary to decrease the vibration level of an impact wrench to decrease the prevalence of Raynaud’s phenomenon.departmental bulletin pape
Relationships among the mental status, maternal anxiety, social support, and sense of coherence in Japanese mothers who are caring for infants
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among various mental and social factors such as mental health status, maternal anxiety regarding their children’s situation, social support, and the sense of coherence (SOC) among Japanese mothers. Thirty-nine subjects (collection rate: 75.5%) completed the 30-item version of the Japanese General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), the Japanese STAI, 13-item version of SOC and some other questionnaires related to child care, and the salivary cortisol levels of all subjects were examined. Fifteen unmarried females comprised the control group for this study.
The results showed no signifi cant difference in any of the parameters except for age. Therefore, the SOC score of the subjects was found to correlate with the GHQ score and the State-Anxiety (SA) and Trait- Anxiety (TA) scores of the STAI, whereas no association was observed regarding the SA in the control group. Furthermore, the results showed that the mothers’ interaction with other mothers affected the SA, their association with their husband and their SOC affected the TA, the TA was related to the SA, and the SA was found to directly correlate with the GHQ. In conclusion, this study suggested that both the mental status and the anxiety of Japanese mothers were associated with the social support to the mother and SOC.departmental bulletin pape
