CT measurement of visceral fat areas using image J
We present a simple method for measurement of visceral fat areas, using a free softwear (Image J) for DICOM (digital imaging and communication in medicine) -formatted abdominal CT (computed tomography) images. As metabolic syndrome is suspected for obese persons with a visceral fat area more than 100 cm2, this method enables us an easy and inexpensive way to evaluate visceral fat areas for clients of nutrition guidance who already underwent abdominal CT.departmental bulletin pape
Factors of Psychogenic Distress in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients:The Impact of Decreased Serum Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor Levels
Depression, dyssomnia, anxiety, and so-called psychogenic distress (PD) are common in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. It was suggested that the PD in the HD patients leads to serious diseases (e.g. cardiovascular disease (CVD), cerebrovascular disease and so on) and to the high mortality rate. Although there were multiple factors of PD by numerous studies, they can be broadly categorized as treatment-related behavioral factors, physical and neurologic. However, the pathophysiology of the PD in the HD patients is poorly understood.
Thus, a brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was focused; it was one of the key molecules modulating brain plasticity. Cumulative evidence has suggested a link between BDNF and depression. In human studies, the serum BDNF level and BDNF mRNA in the brain decreased in patients with major depression.
Incidentally, it showed that serum BDNF in the chronic HD patients was significantly lower than the control group of non-HD patients. Additionally, the prevalence of dyssomnia in the HD patients was the highest in regard to PD, and dyssomnia could lead to the decreased serum BDNF levels according to some studies. Furthermore, as the HD patients were classified into 3 groups by the serum BDNF levels, namely the high, middle and low serum BDNF groups, the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in the low serum BDNF group was higher than those in the other serum BDNF groups. Moreover, the prevalence of CVD in the low serum BDNF group tended to be higher than those in the high serum BDNF group.
However, the mechanism remains unresolved at present. It is suggested that further studies are needed to examine the relationship between the serum BDNF level and PD in HD patients.departmental bulletin pape
How the Reflections on Basic Nursing Seminar II Gave Rise to Self-Awareness and AccumulatedKnowledge from Experience on the Part of Students
Purpose:The goal of this study was to clarify exactly what the nursing students became aware about themselves after reflecting upon their Basic Nursing Seminar II classes as well as their learning of nursing acquired through experience ( knowledge from experience, per say). Also, this study aimed at collecting underlying data for reflective education in the realm of basic nursing education.
Methods:The method of this study was analyzed by a qualitative, descriptive and analytical method. We used reflection papers submitted by the students who completed Basic Nursing Seminar II at B University, extracting data on how they became aware of themselves and on how they learned nursing.
Results:From the reflections of 23 students, we extracted 14 categories of self-awareness with such comments as “I was self-centered in my thinking and in my behavior,” “I learned to interact with each patient in the style most appropriate for him or her.” The kinds of knowledge accumulated by such reflections amounted to 8 categories, including “the importance of communication in order to establish patient assistance and mutual trust,” “the need to ponder upon assistance from the patient’s perspective, and to put the assistance into practice.”
Conclusion:Among the self-awareness that arose from the reflections of students, a positive kind of self-awareness led to confidence and improved motivation to nursing. On the other hand, when students experienced a negative self-awareness, it may have arisen from a difficult circumstance that the students did not know how to handle. It is desired that the faculty should make educationalinterventions so that the students can describe, analyze and consolidate their own feelings, knowledge and attitudes in detail. The effects of such interventions should also be clarified.departmental bulletin pape
A Report on IFHE (International Federation for Home Economies) Conference.
IFHE(International Federation for Home Economies) Conference was held at St. Angela’s College in Sligo City, Ireland, from the 23rd to 25th March, 2017. IFHE was first organized to contribute to the international communities through studies of home economics and education, and its first meeting was held in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 1908. The secretarial office was first set up in Lucerne, but now it is in Paris.
This paper consists of a summary of the author’s report, entitled "Food Education of elementary schools in Japan" and presented at the above meeting, and the author’s thoughts gained from the participants’ questions and suggestions for food education in Japan. The report consists of the following four parts :
1. The outline of the Republic of Ireland
2. Summary of the author’s presentation at the International Federation for Home Economics
3. Future study possibilities suggested through interactions with the audience
4. Similarities in food culture between Ireland and Japandepartmental bulletin pape
Research on the factors that determine self-rated health among the elderly in a rural area
The purpose of the present study is to assess relations between self-rated health and physical, mental, social variables among the elderly in a rural area.A questionnaire survey and physical measurements were conducted in 226 elderly subjects (70 males and 156 females) who live self-sustained lives in Town K, Tokushima Prefecture, with an aging population rate of 49.7%. The ages of the subjects ranged from 65 to 96 with an averaged of 76.6±7.0 years. Self-rated health was scored by using the visual analogue scale (VAS) with the optimal score of 10. The average score of our subject group was 5.6±2.1.
The multiple regression analysis revealed that subjective well-being (p<0.001), serum albumin (p<0.001), ADL (p<0.001), savings (p<0.05), and drinking (p<0.05) were signifi cantly related to self-rated health. Neither sex, age nor productive activities were related to the score of VAS as the dependent variables.departmental bulletin pape
