Ella Nora Phillips was born in Clark County Virginia in 1893. She earned a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1916, married William Wyatt Stewart in 1920 and they moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1922. The Stewart family owned and operated Stewarts' Pharmacy on 566 Indiana Avenue from 1922 until 1945. Ella P. Stewart died in 1987. Ella P. Stewart was the nation's first African-American woman pharmacist

I am writing you unofficially to tell you that the
Trustees at their meeting on April 8, at your request,
voted to retire you as of September 1, 1933, at a pen¬
sion allowance of $1000 a year.
I want to add my own word of sincere thanks and
appreciation, not only for the long years of faithful,
painstaking and conscientious service you have rendered
the institute, but particularly for the loyal cooperation
and help you have given me during my seventeen years*
service. I have appreciated your frankness because I
have known since our school days of your honesty and
your wholly unselfish spirit withal.
I hope the coming years may bring you and your
family satisfaction in the fact that your health may
improve and that life will be pleasanter and richer as
time goes by.
I shall be following your example in the not very
distant future, everything else being equal.

The Old Ladies Home : sketches of early history
No full textDocumentation of the history of the Old Ladies' Home in Toledo, Ohio, dated between 1930 and 1933. It includes a message from the founder at the laying of the cornerstone of a new building, Sunset House, a history of the organization prior, and a history of the property Sunset House was to be built upon. The Old Ladies' Home began as the Home for Friendless Women, an organization which cared for women of all ages. As other community organizations formed to care for younger women, the Home for Friendless Women pivoted to caring for the elderly women of the community. As of 2023, the building still stands and is operated as Otterbein Sunset House
