This study explores the challenges of translating English polysemous words into Arabic with a case study of some excerpts of Paul Torday\u27s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Polysemy—where a word possesses more than one meaning—makes it problematic to preserve the subtlety, precision, and intention of the source. Based on Functional Equivalence Theory (Eugene Nida) as its methodology, the research employs qualitative, descriptive, and analytical methods to explore how multi-meaning words are translated into Arabic to decide what translation options are used and verifies how the choices impact retention of meaning, cultural adaptation, and readability. Functional Equivalence Theory is concerned with expressing the functional impact of a text and not word-for-word translation, where cultural appropriateness and source text fidelity are accorded priority. Considering the close meaning of terms like "hope" and "project," lexical vagueness management and culturally distinctive features for translation are pinpointed in the research. The study offers some evidence regarding the fidelity of translation by examining how vagueness and clarity are managed in literary translation between languages and cultures

    Get PDF
Background: Nutrition has a vital role in human health and well-being, influencing both physical development and cognitive abilities essential for academic success. Research indicates that improved nutrition is associated with enhanced academic performance, including elevated test scores and graduation rates. This study aims to evaluate adolescents\u27 understanding and practices about balanced nutrition at Zaid Al-Shawkani School. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was executed utilizing a self-reported questionnaire. We employed a non-probability convenience sampling method to choose 100 adolescent students. We obtained participants\u27 verbal consent and analyzed the data with SPSS. Results: The survey revealed that 63.3% of students were aware of balanced meals, although only 54.4% implemented them. Sixty percent of responders indicated possessing a modest household income. Moreover, 79% of fathers of the pupils possessed an education, in contrast to just 43% of mothers. Conclusion: Although possessing a moderate comprehension of balanced meals, around fifty percent of the pupils implement these dietary practices. A significant number of students are oblivious to the direct impact that nutrition exerts on cognitive abilities and conduct. We support the implementation of targeted educational programs to enhance knowledge regarding the influence of diet on cognitive performance and overall behavior

    Get PDF
Background: Disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMD) are common conditions that impact jaw function, frequently linked to stress, lifestyle elements, and genetic factors. Due to academic pressures and lifestyle practices, dental students may be at an increased risk of developing TMD. Objective: This research intends to evaluate the prevalence of TMD among dental students at Yemeni universities and examine possible links with demographic factors, symptoms, and triggers. Method: A cross-sectional survey was carried out with 482 dental students from several Yemeni universities. Data were gathered using an online questionnaire, which included demographic information, TMD symptoms, triggers, and lifestyle practices. The study assessed the occurrence of symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking noises, and headaches, alongside factors like stress, alcohol use, and smoking. Results: Findings indicated that stress was a significant contributing factor to the notable prevalence of TMD symptoms among individuals. Symptoms of TMD, including headaches (18.9%) and jaw clicking (14.7%), were more frequently reported in female students. TMD symptoms were also associated with lifestyle habits such as alcohol consumption and smoking (6.4%). Despite experiencing symptoms, only 25.7% of students sought medical help. Conclusion: The research concludes that stress plays a significant role in the heightened prevalence of TMD among dental students. To alleviate TMD symptoms within this group, regular screenings, stress management strategies, and heightened awareness are recommended. Longitudinal studies should be prioritized in future research to understand the progression and long-term impacts of TMD

    Get PDF
Background: Oral cancer is a major global health issue, where early detection is essential for enhancing survival rates. Dental students, as the next generation of practitioners, have an important role in detecting oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Objective: This study seeks to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of Yemeni dental students about OPMDs and strategies for early detection. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 323 dental students from various Yemeni universities. An online questionnaire evaluated students\u27 understanding of oral cancer risk factors, clinical features, diagnostic tools, and screening practices. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 21, applying chi-square tests to explore relationships between demographic factors and oral cancer awareness. Results: The results indicated significant knowledge gaps, with only 28.1% of students accurately identifying the OPMD with the highest malignant transformation rate and 27.2% acknowledging oral cancer risk factors. Awareness of regular oral cancer screenings was particularly low (16.5%). Female students displayed greater awareness regarding the importance of screening (p = 0.004), while students with 0–5 years of experience showed better knowledge of diagnostic tools (p = 0.023). These findings emphasize the necessity for improved educational initiatives in oral cancer detection. Conclusion This study highlights the need for focused educational programs to enhance dental students\u27 understanding of oral cancer and OPMDs. Tackling these knowledge gaps through enhancements to the curriculum and ongoing education initiatives can empower future dentists to play a more effective role in early detection and prevention, ultimately alleviating the burden of oral cancer in Yemen

Rare Diagnostic Case of Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome: Case Report

    Get PDF
Wilkie\u27s syndrome, another name for superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome, is an uncommon cause of proximal small intestinal blockage. It happens when the angle between the abdominal aorta and the SMA narrows, causing compression of the third section of the duodenum between them, near their origin. Here, we describe radiological findings of such a rare case of proximal small bowel obstruction in a young female patient who presented long time of repeated chronic symptoms of recurring post-eating epigastric pain and vomiting, with no symptomatic relief on medications. An abdominal CT scan revealed distension of the duodenum and stomach, with narrowing of the third portion of the duodenum as it was compressed between the SMA and aorta. The reduced angle between the SMA and the abdominal aorta was indicative of SMA syndrome. These findings were confirmed following a duodenojejunostomy procedure. Accurate diagnosis and reporting of SMA syndrome are crucial, as the non-specific clinical presentation of small bowel obstruction can principally lead to delayed detection, resulting in chronic symptoms, complications, repeated hospitalizations, and electrolyte imbalances

Management of Hot Tooth in Endodontics: An Updated Review

    Get PDF
Endodontic treatments are performed in pulpal inflammation conditions where local anesthesia is the most important pain control measure. But achieving local anesthesia in inflamed tissues is still a difficult process. Anatomical variations, inflammation & anxiety are the main factors responsible for anesthetic failure. The strategies for the management of the patient include; patient education, anxiety management, & pharmacological management to increase the success rate of local anesthesia. Other techniques include intraligamentary, intraosseous, intraseptal and intrapulpal injections to improve anesthesia, especially where conventional methods have failed. Each method has different efficacy and discomfort, and among them, intraosseous and intraligamentary injections have been found to be effective in enhancing the success of local anesthesia. This review explains the causes of local anesthetic failure and outlines the management to maximize patient’s comfort in endodontic treatment

    Get PDF
Background: Vaccine hesitancy has emerged as a growing public health concern globally, particularly in low-resource and conflict-affected settings such as Yemen. Caregivers\u27 knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) play a crucial role in childhood immunization uptake. Objective: This case report aimed to present a case of uterine perforation and bowel prolapse following an unsafe induced abortion. Objective: This study aimed to assess caregivers’ KAP toward routine childhood vaccination in Aden, Yemen, and identify barriers influencing vaccination decisions.  Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in six districts of Aden from April 23 to May 20, 2025. A total of 277 participants were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using a validated, structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS version 26. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests were used to assess associations between variables.  Results: Of the 277 participants, 88.45% reported vaccinating their children. Higher educational level (p = 0.034) and better knowledge of vaccine-related symptoms (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with vaccination uptake. No significant association was found between caregiver age and vaccination status (p = 0.433). Fever (40.2%) was the most common post-vaccination symptom. While most caregivers did not report specific barriers, fear of unfamiliar vaccination campaigns was the most cited concern.    Conclusion: the findings highlight a strong link between caregivers\u27 education and knowledge with vaccine acceptance. Addressing misinformation and promoting community-specific education are critical to improving immunization rates in Aden.
