    The Proteasome and Ageing

    The proteasome is a multi-subunit proteolytic complex that functions to degrade normal proteins for physiological regulation and to eliminate abnormal proteins for cellular protection. Generally, the proteasome targets substrate proteins that are marked by attachment of multiple ubiquitin molecules. In various types of cells in an organism, damage to proteins occurs both from internal sources such as reactive oxygen species and from external ones such as UV radiation from the sun. The proteasome functions to protect the cells by degrading damaged proteins. With ageing, however, the capacity of the proteasome to degrade damaged proteins is reduced as indicated by evidence gathered by many studies. Studies on ageing in muscle, skin, and brain show that with age catalytic activity of the proteasome is decreased and the expression of proteasome subunits is altered. Age-related accumulation of damaged or misfolded proteins causes further reduction of proteasome activity. Abnormal proteins also accumulate as a result of age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Deficits in proteasome activity might be responsible for accumulation of protein aggregates and thus contribute to the pathology. Results from several studies suggest a link between the proteasome and longevity. This chapter reviews the various ways in which the proteasome is associated with the ageing process and examines evidence gathered from investigations on cultured cells, model organisms, and humans

    French existentialist literature was born in response to the horrors of World War II. The two most prominent representatives of French existentialism were Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. Both writers were once friends, but their differing approaches to existentialism drove them apart. Camus believed that people should appreciate the life they have, rather than focus on the meaninglessness of a world without God. Sartre believed that people should take agency for their own lives to achieve a state of higher consciousness called “pour-soi.” Sartre’s ideas of self-agency were sometimes problematic, however, in that they ascribed inferiority to selected groups and advocated for violence as a means to an end

    An Asynchronous, Virtual Lab Course Model using the Framework to Reshape Student Responses to Media Narratives

    This chapter describes a lab course redesigned by two librarians in a small liberal arts college. The course is tied to an undergraduate methods course, Research, Media, Culture, in a Critical Media & Cultural Studies program. The lab had previously been taught as a synchronous course over three weeks. As a response to lower enrollments in the major, as well as the virtual teaching mode for the main course, we adapted the lab component into a six-week asynchronous course pilot with a goal of delving more deeply into information literacy pedagogy than the previous course format allowed. We also embedded ourselves in the main course over those six weeks, joining discussions of documentaries and readings and answering questions on research and analysis. We designed the new course around the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and each week focused on one of the six frames, with readings and online discussion questions in Canvas, some involving search exercises. The final assignment for the lab course was a short reflective essay (300–500 words). In this chapter, we describe the coursework, the discussion prompts, and an assessment of the pilot based on student responses to discussion board questions, in which we clarified certain misunderstandings of concepts; as well as excerpts from the reflective essays and the students’ evaluations of the course, anonymized and selected for relevance to the transformative educational aims of the course. We present this asynchronous course pilot as a model for other courses that seek to help students engage in transformative learning, with the discussion questions and readings included for reuse or adaptation

    The Effectiveness of a Social and Emotional Learning Intervention Program with Middle School Students in Central Georgia

    Addressing students\u27 social and emotional learning can lead to increased social and emotional functioning, improved classroom and school behavior, and increased academic performance. This study investigated the effectiveness of a social and emotional learning (SEL) intervention program in a middle school in central Georgia. The study utilized a mixed methodology and examined the effects of a semester long SEL intervention program called Second Step. The participants in the study consisted of 60 7th-grade students between 11 and 13 years of age who were enrolled in a health education course for the second semester at ABC Middle School. Descriptive statistics and paired-sample t-tests were used to test the hypotheses of this study with the scientific approach and gather quantitative data. Qualitative data were collected from five participants\u27 pre- and post-intervention surveys and open-ended questions to understand a more in-depth look into the rationale behind their survey answers. The study\u27s results revealed a significant disparity between students\u27 pre-training and post-training perceptions of their classroom and school. From the findings of this study, it can be inferred that the positive difference in students\u27 perceptions of their classroom and school after participating in the Second Step. The study’s results indicated a reduction in disciplinary referrals after students participated in the Second Step, although this reduction was not statistically significant. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating social and emotional learning interventions into the school curriculum while suggesting the need for further exploration of enhancing classroom behavior outcomes

    NEW FEATURES OF CYCLOCARYA BROWNII MANCHESTER & DILCHER FROM THE LATE PALEOCENE OF NORTH DAKOTA, USA

    Premise of research. Fossil infructescences of the late Paleocene Cyclocarya brownii ( Juglandaceae) and winged fruits with newly recognized anatomical structure are described from Almont and Beicegel Creek, North Dakota. These fossils demonstrate that C. brownii has many similarities to extant Cyclocarya paliurus but differs in several morphological and anatomical features. Comparisons of the fossil record of Cyclocarya document the transition of characters in the evolution of the oldest extant genus of Juglandaceae. Methodology. Fossils were digitally imaged with reflected light microscopy (LM). Some specimens were embedded in Ward’s Bio-Plastic synthetic resin, sectioned into wafers, mounted on microscope slides, and imaged with reflected LM. Permineralized specimens from the Beicegel Creek site were prepared with the cellulose acetate peel technique, mounted on microscope slides, and imaged with transmitted LM. Extant fruits of C. paliurus were photographed from freshly collected material. Pivotal results. Infructescences of C. brownii differ from those of modern C. paliurus in several ways. The fossils are racemes with crowded fruits borne on elongate pedicels. In contrast, extant C. paliurus has spikes bearing fewer fruits per infructescence (10 vs. 23). Fruit wall anatomy is similar to that of extant and other known fossil species of Cyclocarya but is more complex and has a distinctive idioblast layer not present in extant Cyclocarya. Fossil pollen is triporate in contrast to the tetraporate pollen in extant Cyclocarya. As in extant Cyclocarya, pollen is borne both in staminate catkins and occasionally in stamens attached to fruits. We document a fossil fruit with stamens bearing pollen. This feature, sporadic in extant Cyclocarya, was also present in the Paleogene. Conclusions. Late Paleocene C. brownii differs in comparison with extant C. paliurus and related fossil forms in infructescence architecture, fruit size and symmetry, fruit wall anatomy, and pollen aperture number. Trends in character evolution from the Paleogene to the present day include (1) changes from helically arranged, densely distributed pedicellate fruits to sessile fruits borne singly along a slender axis, (2) transition from pyramidal to round nutlets with (3) equatorial versus basal wing attachment, (4) a change in pollen aperture number from three to four, and (5) simplification of the fruit wall in extant Cyclocarya

    A note on maximal non-Manis extensions

    A ring extension R⊆ S is said to be maximal non-Manis if R is not a Manis subring of S and each proper S-overring of R is a Manis subring of S. We study properties of maximal non-Manis extensions. We show that if R⊆ S is maximal non-Manis extension and R is integrally closed in S, then R⊆ S is a Prüfer extension. We investigate conditions under which the extension R[X] ⊆ S[X] (respectively R(X) ⊆ S(X)) is maximal non-Manis

    Fintech curricula: a survey of IS, accounting, and finance department chairs

    The demand for students educated in Financial Technology (FinTech) has increased as the industry has rapidly expanded since the “Fintech Revolution” in 2017. Universities are working to expand the number of courses and programs that will prepare students to handle the emergence of this new technology. Currently, there is little consensus about which subjects should be taught and which departments should be involved. A widely-accepted standardized curriculum for Fintech does not yet exist. This study sought to better understand the current state of Fintech curricula at universities. This study includes a review of the established literature in this area and a quantitative analysis of survey data. Department chairs in IS, Accounting and Finance departments at AACSB-accredited colleges were surveyed and results revealed that most universities did not offer undergraduate or graduate Fintech courses despite 95% of respondents reporting that they believed students had an interest in Fintech courses and 98.6% of respondents believing that employers had an interest in students educated in Fintech. Further results show that most Fintech classes are taught by the Finance departments at these colleges, followed by Information Systems departments. Despite high interest in Fintech courses, there is a lack of supply of these courses and suboptimal participation of the teaching of these courses by IS departments

    New contracts and dismissal threats from highly drafted rookies: What motivates NFL quarterbacks?

    The authors examined whether incumbent starting quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL) performed better after their teams drafted another quarterback in the first round of the preceding draft. There was some evidence that quarterbacks exhibited slightly improved performance under these conditions. However, the impact on performance was small. There was little evidence of opportunistic behavior by quarterbacks, but quarterbacks may perform slightly better in the first year of a new contract. The authors conclude that quarterbacks are already exerting at or near their maximum effort level and thus their performances are unlikely to be greatly impacted by dismissal threats or contract details
