Do flight characteristics affect the likelihood of accident fatalities?
After every flight accident in the United States, the National Transportation Safety Board releases a report determining the probable cause of the accident and flight characteristics. The characteristics include weather, flight training, purpose of flight, and type of aircraft. After analyzing over 300 flight accidents for single-engine aircrafts in 2019, my results do not indicate a statistically significant effect between a pilot\u27s level of training and the fatality of an accident. However, my results show that when a flight’s purpose is instructive, there is a robust negative negative effect on the likelihood an accident will be fatal. Furthermore, I conclude that if the weather during a flight was classified as Instrument Conditions, the likelihood that an accident would be fatal is positive
Does Combine 40-Time Affect Player Performance in the NFL?
The NFL (National Football League) generated $18.6 billion in revenue in 2022, and the best tool teams have to improve their quality—and in turn, value—is at the NFL Draft. Teams use the NFL Combine as a guide for which players to draft. The 40-yard dash is generally viewed as the most impactful test on draft position. I test whether 40-yard dash times affect player performance in the NFL, and whether NFL teams are overvaluing the physical tests at the NFL Combine. Preliminary results from my research indicate that 40-yard dash times have a very positive impact on player performance at the NFL leve
Inclusive Language in Spanish
With the evolution of modern society and cultures, new problems surrounding the inclusivity of linguistics have arisen. In the United States, movements involving the cultural awareness of pronoun usage have given way to a new form of language that takes everyone’s identities into account. However, this trend has been more difficult to implement in countries with a more complex set of linguistic rules, such as Spanish-speaking countries. The structure of the Spanish language makes the transition to “lenguaje inclusivo” or inclusive language, a challenge considering the heavy usage of gendered terms in nouns, articles, and adjectives. This has not stopped the Spanish-speaking community from progressing to become all-encompassing of the different identities present in the world today as well as becoming more aware of the “machismo” mindset of the Spanish language. This presentation will present various changes that are being made to the Spanish language to move towards an all-inclusive and progressive culture
Quality, Meaningful Educational Experiences: An Autobiographical Study of Teaching and Learning Algebra 1
This autobiographical study of teaching and learning Algebra 1 was developed to examine classroom experiences through the lens of the researcher and to explore the perceptions of teachers and students involved in the study. The goal was to identify the quality, meaningful educational experiences in the classroom which led to the development of algebraic thinking and self-efficacy among students who previously demonstrated a struggle to learn mathematics. The inspiration for this study was my personal experience as a student, as I also struggled to develop algebraic thinking as a high school student. The school district in which this study was conducted was the same district which instilled in me the desire to become an educator, and in which I have worked most of the years of my career. During this study I examined classroom experiences using interviews and observations to understand what quality, meaningful learning experiences were available in the classroom. Throughout the study, teachers were provided with full-faculty and differentiated professional learning and support. The target for these professional learning experiences was to enable teachers to develop learning experiences that led to student development of algebraic thinking. Classroom observations focused on the nature of learning experiences presented to students. Through my study I found evidence of students\u27 need to develop mathematical concepts through experiences which allowed them to collaborate with peers and be supported by teachers as they developed algebraic thinking. Lessons that included a balance of student interaction and the development of conceptual understanding resulted in greater student engagement
Le proto-féminisme de George Sand
George Sand, the pen name of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, was a radical and revolutionary writer. Through her writing, she challenged social norms and incorporated gender equality into her novels. This presentation examines Sand\u27s four works: Indiana, Valentine, Lélia, and La Mare au diable. The question of Sand\u27s status as a feminist writer, or even as an early feminist writer, is explored through women\u27s roles in society through the analysis of nineteenth-century literature
Evaluation of Breastfeeding Interventions to Improve Duration in Women at risk for Breastfeeding Attrition
Children that are optimally breastfed have the healthiest start in life. The World Health Organization and the CDC recommend that mothers optimally breastfeed. Benefits of breastfeeding to children include the receipt of antibodies, reduction of ear, respiratory, and gastrointestinal infections, decreased sudden infant death syndrome, allergies, diabetes, and childhood leukemia. Several research studies have reported a strong positive correlation between breastfeeding and reduced infant morbidity and mortality. Evidence illustrates that the health benefits from breastfeeding are dose-dependent, thus the longer the breastfeeding duration the greater the acquisition of the enumerated benefits. However, premature cessation of breastfeeding less than the WHO recommended duration is prevalent. Worldwide. The purpose of this project was to identify women at risk for early breastfeeding cessation at a midwifery practice, supplement this group with multiple forms of support to help promote the WHO and CDC goal of optimal breastfeeding so the long-term health sequelae related to breastfeeding may be experienced
How to Spark Bio Curiosity: An Innovative High School Biology Curriculum
This project is a researched creative endeavor focused around the creation of an exemplary high school biology course. This presentation will showcase an original high school biology curriculum designed to ignite students’ innate curiosity and empower meaningful learning of core concepts like cell structure, genetics, evolution and ecology. Students revisit key ideas through a spiral curriculum that builds complexity, tackling open-ended problems and collaborating on hands-on inquiries like formulating hypotheses, designing experiments, collecting data and drawing evidence-based conclusions. Tangible projects allow students to demonstrate content knowledge in addition to critical thinking abilities like synthesizing concepts, evaluating claims and applying learning to new contexts. The course moves beyond rote memorization to utilize immersive pedagogies including project-based learning, interactive simulations, and student-driven labs. Issues of ethics, bias and representation in science are incorporated to integrate principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Students self-monitor progression through the spiral curriculum and receive detailed mastery-based feedback on their skills, as opposed to traditional percentage grading. The curriculum aims to cultivate a supportive environment where students feel empowered to take risks and learn from mistakes. With research-based practices, the course aims to instill lifelong scientific curiosity and equip students with the skills to continually apply scientific concepts and a spirit of inquiry in their everyday lives. The goal is creating scientifically-literate citizens who can evaluate claims, make informed decisions, and enact positive change in a complex world
Molecular Detection of Human and Dog Fecal Pollution in Pensacola, Florida
Pensacola, Florida (USA), has a thriving coastal community that depends on its coastal areas for recreation, shellfish harvesting, and fisheries. However, increasing levels of fecal pollution pose a potential threat to the water quality of these coastal systems. Identifying the source and abundance of contaminants in these environments is critical to controlling fecal pollution in these areas. This study aimed to use Microbial Source Tracking techniques to determine the source of pollution in five sites (Bayou Texar Lower, Willard Norris Road Creek, Clear Creek Boat Ramp @ 87, Quinette River Boat Ramp and Pensacola Bay Bridge) in the Pensacola area. DNA was extracted from water samples and then analyzed using PCR-based molecular Microbial Source Tracking techniques to determine the presence of human (HF-183-1), dog (BacCan), and avian (CP1) fecal pollution in these sites. Human-specific fecal bacteria were detected in Bayou Texar Lower, Willard Norris Road Creek, and Pensacola Bay Bridge sites. Dog-specific fecal bacteria were detected in Willard Norris Road Creek, Clear Creek Boat Ramp, and Pensacola Bay Bridge. There was no detection of avian-specific fecal bacteria in any of the sites. Human and dog fecal pollution detection in these coastal areas was attributed to urban developmental activities
Promoting Physiologic Maternity Care by Improving Access to Doulas
Background
Birth in the United States leans towards a medicalized approach, overlooking the advantages of physiologic birth. Physiologic birth is a natural approach to childbirth, without medical interventions. Intrapartum nurses play an integral role in caring for caring for women during labor by providing continuous labor support. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, exacerbated nursing shortages and increased nurse to patient ratios have made it increasingly challenging for intrapartum nurses to provide continuous labor support to their patients. The aim of this DNP project is to gain insight into the beliefs of intrapartum nurses regarding childbirth and how these beliefs impact their approach to either medicalized or physiologic birth and whether they are supportive of doulas as part of the obstetrical team.
Methods
This DNP project used a cross-sectional correlational study design of intrapartum nurses at three facilities in Georgia. A Likert-type questionnaire with open-ended qualitative survey was administered to intrapartum nurses using a convenience sampling method.
Results
Among the project participants, the majority of IP nurses had birth beliefs supportive of physiologic birth practices. Older nurses with more years of experience and in rural geographic facility settings had higher scores [IPNBBP] indicating stronger physiologic birth beliefs. Although intrapartum nurses minimally agreed they understood the formal training of doulas, those with higher self-efficacy scores understood the role of the doula.
Conclusion
Disseminating these findings in these facilities, strategies may lead to strategies to support intrapartum nurses towards physiologic birth practices and improve collaborative efforts to improve access and utilization of doulas as part of the obstetrical team
Is the Tween Market Dispersing?
In today’s market, influencers have a tremendous amount of control over what consumers purchase. The average consumer is able to see a person use the product and see its effects in real time. With that being said, the age in which children are able to use social media is decreasing. Younger children are beginning to have the same information access as adults. While the effects of social media on children have been a major question over the past 10 years, I would like to pose the question of how these young consumers are being affected by the increasing number of influencers. Due to their immense access to the same products that young adults are using, they are skipping over their typical age-appropriate products and jumping towards teen-targeted products. The question I will be researching is are we seeing the diminishing of the tween population? The relevance of this question to the marketing world is how this will affect how these younger generations will respond to future advertising techniques. Since their brains have not fully developed, it is difficult for them to make sound purchasing decisions. Children and young teens also have a huge impact on their parents’ buying practices, and if we see the disappearance of the tween population, this could put many businesses under hot water. The method I will be using for this research proposal will be a mixed method approach in which I will undergo exploratory, qualitative, and quantitative research. The exploratory research will begin with a survey that investigates what industries that various age groups are influenced to purchase. I will then cross analyze the age groups to see if the typical tween ages of 10-13 are influenced to purchase from similar industries as the older age group
