    Effect of Handball Specific Aerobic Training on Aerobic Capacity and Maximum Exercise Heart Rate of Male Handball Players

    The aim of our study is to assess the effect of handball specific aerobic training on aerobic capacity of male handball players. Sixteen (16) handball players were selected and randomly classifieds into two groups namely handball specific aerobic training (HSAT = 8) and control group (CON = 8). Sixteen handball players were tested before, at middle and after six weeks of training. The aerobic capacity of handball players was measured through Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level II and por heart rate monitor was used to measure maximum exercise heart rate. The HSAT group performed 4 × 4 min small sided game at an intensity of 90-95% of heart rate maximum (HRmax), separated by 4 minutes of active recovery during which handball passing drill was performed at 60-65% of HRmax.. To assess the training effect 2 × 3 repeated measure ANOVA on last factor repeated was performed. When interaction is significant simple effect was calculated and followed by Scheffe S post hoc test. The result of our study showed that six weeks of HSAT significantly improved aerobic capacity of handball players. The training intervention showed 4.75% of improvement in first three weeks and 8.83% after six weeks of handball specific aerobic training. The maximum exercise heart rate showed statistically significant interaction effect but it failed to show difference between the groups and within the groups at different testing conditions. Therefore, this study shows that handball specific aerobic training programs might be appropriate enough to improve aerobic capacity of handball players in short duration but it failed to show any alterations in maximum exercise heart rate

    Effect of Vision Training on Serving Skill of Volley Ball Players

    For the purpose of this study the investigator randomly selected thirty two volleyball players (N=32) from School of Physical Education and Sports Science, Kannur University and B S E Volley ball club Aleppey who were equally divided into experimental group and control group (n=16). Their age ranged from 20 to 25years. The experimental group got sports vision training according to training programme and each training session was for one hour and the total duration of the training programme was for six week. During this period, the control group was let off without any training. The effect of vision training on the serving ability was tested. The pre-test was conducted on the experimental and control group. After six weeks of training post-test was conducted. „T?test was used to analyse the data. From the statistical analysis it is evident that in serving test item significant changes were noticed after training

    Effect of Meditation and Relaxation Techniques on Goal Scoring Skills among Men Soccer Players

    The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of meditation and relaxation techniques on goal scoring skills among soccer players. For the purpose of the study; three groups: two experimental groups (A), meditation group (B), relaxation techniques group (C) and the third group served as the control group. Random group design was employed. Reliability coefficients for the test- re- test scores on goal scoring skills: short kick (soccer skill test) and dribbling and shooting (soccer skill test) were selected to collect the data. To find out the effects of meditation and relaxation techniques on goal scoring skills among soccer players, ANCOVA was employed, the proposed hypothesis was tested at .05 level of confidence. The result revealed significant improvement in goal scoring skills. The two experimental groups were effective in improving the short kick, dribbling and shooting. There was significant difference between relaxation group and control group; there was no significant difference between treatment groups

    Effects of Combination of Assisted and Resisted Sprint Trainingon Anaerobic Power among Male Soccer Players

    The aim of the study was to find out the effects of combination of assisted and resisted sprint training on anaerobic power among male soccer players. To achieve this purpose of the study, sixty college male soccer players from Udumalpet, Tirupur District, Tamilnadu, were selected at random as subjects. The age of the subjects was ranged from 18 to 23 years. The selected subjects were divided into four groups, Group - 1 those who underwent assisted sprint training (AST) Group - 2 those who underwent resisted sprint training (RST), Group - 3 those who underwent combined assisted sprint training (AST+RST) and Group - 4 was served as control participants. The anaerobic power was selected as dependent variable and it was measured by MargariaKalamen power test. All the subjects of four groups were tested on anaerobic power prior and immediately after the study period of nine weeks. ANCOVA was used to find out significant adjusted post test mean difference of four groups. The results of the study revealed that anaerobic power of the male soccer players significantly differ and found high in combination of assisted and resisted training than other groups, similarly comparison with control group also showed significant changes consequent to nine weeks of selected training programme. It is concluded that combination of assisted and resisted sprint training significantly improves the anaerobic power of male soccer players

    Comparison of Health of Height-Weight Matched Young-Adult Female Athletes of Hilly and Plane Regions in Selected Anthropometric Measurements

    Height and weight are the major two determinants for various anthropometric properties at any age in life. People of different racial origins and geographical locations have specific anthropometric features. Purpose of this study was to compare health status of height-weight matched young-adult females of hill and plane regions through selected anthropometric measurements. Sixty (N=60) 18– 25 years female, thirty from each of the hill and plane localities were the subjects. The height range was 157.5 – 162.5 cm and weight was 52.5 – 55.5 kg. Seven skin-folds, six body circumferences and three body composition measures, namely – body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body fat percentage (%BF), derived from respective anthropometric measurements, all were the variables of the study. Out of seven skin-folds, plane subjects were significantly higher (P>0.05) at only biceps site and hilly subjects at sub-scapula, suprailiac, abdomen and thigh but no difference existed at triceps and calf. Among the seven body circumferences, hilly girls were superior at upper limb, lower limb and waist circumferences; however, at thigh, calf, abdomen and hip sites there was no any significant difference between the groups. Among the three body composition measures, only %BF and WHR was higher in hilly subjects. But LBM and BMI did not differ in both groups

    A Comparative Effect of Soccer Training in Small Playfield and Regular Official Size Playfield in the Selected Physical Fitness Parameters

    The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of training in small size playfield and regular official size playfield in the selected physical fitness parameters. Sixty-six districts level male soccer players (age 17-25) of Assam were divided into three unequated group in equal number. Two experimental groups, Group-A and Group-B had gone through the 12 weeks training programme consist of general conditioning, techno-tactical (special conditioning) training and game practice progressively for two- and half-hour par day, five days per week in Small Playfield (SP) and Regular Official Size Playfield (ROSP) respectively and Control Group-C did not participate to any special training programme. The selected physical fitness parameters were measured before and immediately after completion of the training progrmme. To find out the pre and post training performance and significance differences among the groups the collected data were analyzed statistically through T-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Analysis of Co-variance (ANCOVA). The level of significance was observed at 0.05 level of confidence. The finding shows that the selected physical fitness parameters (Speed, t= 8.10 > 2.08; Explosive Leg Strength, t= 3.49 > 2.08); Agility, t= 3.22 > 2.08; Eye-leg Coordination, t= 3.60 > 2.08; Cardiovascular Endurance, t= 5.76 > 2.08) of Group-A (SP) were improved significantly. In case of Group- B (ROSP) there were significant improvement of Speed (t= 6.49 > 2.08), Explosive Leg Strength (t= 2.87 > 2.08), and Cardiovascular Endurance (t=7.94 > 2.08). There also significant differences were found between pre-test and post-test means of composite scores of selected physical fitness parameters in both the experimental group A and B (t= 6.81 and 6.53 > 2.08). Insignificant difference was found in the pre-test means of three selected groups as the obtained F-value of 0.072 is less than that of tabulated F-value of 3.144 for the d.f. of 2/63 at 0.05 level and significant difference was found in the post-test means and adjusted means of three selected groups as the F-Value 32.10 and 181.256 are quite higher than the tabulated F-value of 3.144 and 3.146 respectively at 0.05 level of confidence

    Twenty-Four Hour Blood Pressure Variation and Cardiovascular Risks between Smokers and Nonsmokers

    There are short-term and long-term variations seen in blood pressure. An abnormal pattern in cyclic variations of blood pressure (diurnal or seasonal) correlates well with an increased cardiovascular risk for hypertension, regardless of the resting blood pressure level. Increased blood pressure reactivity to smoking is also associated with a higher cardiovascular risk, and may be a significant determinant of cyclic blood pressure variations. The purpose of the study was to compare systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) between smokers and non smokers and elicit the cardiovascular risk. To achieve the purpose twenty (20) male athletes were selected from Dept. of physical education and sports science, Annamalai University, among these selected subjects ten (10) were smokers and ten (10) were non smokers. The parameters analyzed were 24-hour daytime and nighttime systolic and diastolic blood pressure using sphygmomanometer. The data was collected at six different times of the day 02:00, 06:00, 10:00, 14:00, 18:00 and 22:00 hours respectively. The data was collected from smokers and non smokers on SBP and DBP and 2 × 6 ANOVA with last factor repeated was computed. SBP and DBP showed significant variations between smokers and non smokers. SBP and DBP showed significant variations between smokers and non smokers at different times of the day. Not only the absolute value of blood pressure, but also the patterns of its excessive variation are closely related to the occurrence of cardiovascular events, so these patterns are clinically important. It may be difficult to explain the exact mechanisms of various abnormal short-term and long-term blood pressure variations at present. Smoking has been suggested as the causes of abnormal variations in blood pressure

    Effect of Resistance Training on Shooting Performance of Basketball Players

    The purpose of the study was to find out the effect of resistance training on shooting performance among college basketball players. To achieve this purpose of the study, thirty college students were selected as subjects who were from Trivandrum. The selected subjects were aged between 18 to 22 years. They were divided into two equal groups of fifteen each, Group I underwent resistance training and Group II acted as control that did not participate in any special training apart from their regular curricular activities. The subjects were tested on selected criterion variable such as shooting performance prior to and immediately after the training period. The selected criterion variable such as shooting performance was determined through malty shooting test. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to find out the significant differences if any, between the experimental group and control group on selected criterion variable. In all the cases, level of confidence was fixed to test the significance, which was considered as an appropriate. The result of the present study has revealed that there was a significant difference among the experimental and control group on shooting performance

    Comparison of Explosive Power between Male Volleyball and Basketball Players

    The purpose of this study is to compare explosive power between male volleyball and basketball players of Annamalai University. To achieve the purpose of this study, thirty male players, that is fifteen basketball players and fifteen volleyball players were selected as subjects from various departments of Annamalai University, and their age ranged from 19 to 25 years. These subjects were tested on explosive power by vertical jump test. The collected data was analysed using independent ‘t’ ratio to find out the significant difference between volleyball and basketball players. The result of the study showed that there was no significant difference on explosive power (t = 0.136, p > 0.05) between volleyball and basketball players. It is concluded that both games demand greater explosive power for better performance. The nature of both games varies, although the skills like spiking and jump shot require explosive power as a result of this no difference is elicited between the groups

    Impact of Level of Participation on Anxiety and Performance among Basketball Players

    The objective of the study was to investigate the impact of level of participation on anxiety and performance among basketball players. Sixty male basketball players representing three different levels that is inter-university, inter-district, inter-club, constituted the sample of the study. Anxiety and performance of the basketball players were selected as the variables of the study. Anxiety was measured by SCAT questionnaire and Performance was measured by rating scale. Descriptive statistics, One-way analysis of variance, LSD Post-hoq test and Pearson product moment Correlation analysis were employed to analyze the data. Significant differences were found among three levels of participation with regard to performance only and anxiety is found to have negative impact on the performance
