The Comparison between National Final Examination Test Items and English Teacher Made-Test Items of 2010 and 2011
The objective of the paper is to determine the relevance between the scope of the national final examination test items in English lesson and the English teacher made test items. It is also to identify the relevance between the deepness of national final examination test items in English subject and the English teacher made test item. The finding showed that  more than fifty percents of tryout out test items are not relevant with the national test items. Meanwhile, the final national test items were design with higher cognitive domain than teacher made test items. It means the teacher made test items (tryout) is more superficial than final national test items. It can be a reason why the students who are can pass the tryout test which is made in teacher cannot pass the national final examination test (standardized test). It is expected that this study provides empirical evidence to devise on their optimal uses in EFL teaching.  Copyright © 2015 by Al-Ta'lim All right reserve
Model of Islamic Counseling in Developing Students’ Competencies in MAN 1 Bandung
Students’ interpersonal problems with their peers, parents, and teachers have become more critical in the present society that serious attention must be paid to overcome it. Therefore, Islamic counseling model which is derived from the Quranic principles has been developed to sustain the wealthy condition of individual students. The purpose of this research is to develop an effective Islamic counseling model that may increase students’ interpersonal competency in MAN I Bandung.  To achieve such a purpose, then, a Research and Development (RD) through need assessment, development, experiment, and model revise were set up. A quasi – experiment with “Pretest – Posttest Control Group Designs†procedure has been implemented to test the model being developed. The finding showed that the level of student’s interpersonal competency before the treatment varied greatly. The post-test score after the treatment, however, showed that their interpersonal competencies got significantly improved. This improvement suggests that student’s interpersonal competency should be developed in terms of: self perceptive and other people, self firm, become comfortable with one self and other people, become independent person, realistic expectation to oneself and other people, and self protection in interpersonal situations.Keywords:   Islamic Counseling Model and Interpersonal CompetencyCopyright © 2015 by Al-Ta'lim All right reserve
The Implementation of Technology Approaches to Develop Learners’ Autonomy in Learning English
Autonomy in learning is about people taking more control over their learning in the classrooms, the purpose of learn languages and the ways in which they learn them. In this way, technology helps much in learning a language. This paper explores the autonomy as more than preference or strategy by the learner; it must be supported in a systematic way by the teacher and the curriculum for the learner to benefit. The characteristics of successful autonomous learner are explained followed by some examples that shown that learners have in common are that their attitudes were developed after they made their own decision for themselves that exclusively studying in the classroom environment was not enough. The paper also emphasis on technology approaches in developing learner autonomy, especially by using the computer and the internet. The Relationship Between Listening Strategy Performance and Critical Listening Ability of Indonesian Students
It is believed that students’ critical listening ability can be improved through proper listening strategy performance. This action research (Fraenkel Wallen, 2007) was conducted in line with the assumption that students of Indonesia Literature and Language Education, Bengkulu University and Bengkulu Muhammadiyah University could reach proficient level provided that they were taught properly. The goal of this research was to reveal listening strategy performance related to students’ critical listening ability. The result of the research showed that the relationship between listening strategy performance and critical listening ability of students tended to be directly proportional in which high students’ listening strategy performance tended to be followed by high critical listening ability and vise versa. Students’ listening strategy performance in improving students’ critical listening ability was able to (1) effective activities, students create active, effective, and creative learning process independently in measuring and developing in each step of listening learning model, (2) enough listening learning media can improve students’ critical listening skill (3) critical listening strategy performance can increase students’ critical listening ability. Copyright © 2015 by Al-Ta'lim All right reserve
Brain Based Teaching Model as Transformation of Learning Paradigm in Higher Education
Brain -based teaching model is a new paradigm that can facilitate students in optimizing student learning by the functioning the brain as a whole. Lessons are held today assume that all students equally so that learning provide the same services to each student in the class. With this model, the students are given different stimulation according to their abilities and needs. Base on brain learning theory -based teaching, the learning should pay attention to the five needs of the brain in general. The fifth factor is the need for a sense of comfort, the need for interaction, the need for knowledge, the need for the activity and the need for self-reflection. Improving Students’ Skills in Translation through Students-Teams Achievement Division (STAD) Technique
This classroom action rresearch was aimed at improving students’ skills in translating at the English Department of the State Islamic University (UIN) Ar-Rarniry Banda Aceh by using the Student-Teams Achievement Division (STAD) Technique. Throughout the entire cycles, students worked in groups of 4-5 persons to plan and write their translations. The study showed that the average score of pre- test (66) increased dramatically to reach 86, and moved up a little higher (87) after the second cycle. Grammatical Errors in Speaking Made by the Third Year English Department Students STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh
Speaking is important skill in the language learning. Many people assumed that study the language must be able to speak using the language. Besides that, language is a system of understanding to communicate with others. The researcher found out the error and hopefully it can be reflection in learning English. The method of this research is qualitative research. It is based on the research focus; to analyze the grammatical errors of English department students’ of STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh. The methods used by the researcher to get the data were observation, interview, and documentation. There were three activities on data analysis; data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/ verification. The result shows that the students have not mastered the use of verb groups. It can be seen from the number of the errors made.
