    Rural Area Learners’ Writing Self-efficacy Development: A Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches

    This case study aimed to evaluate the rural area learners’ writing self-efficacy using two different approaches which are qualitative and quantitative approach. It involved three form four students and a teacher for six months. In this study, the learners’ writing self-efficacy was investigated using a combination of quantitative and qualitative (classroom observation). Classroom observation was based on three characteristics: persistence in accomplishing language tasks, self-awareness of English proficiency, and willingness to engage in language activities. These characteristics which were concept of self-efficacy. This study did not focus on the score of WSE scales alone but also placed a heavy emphasis on the perceptions and actions of the form four students and teacher. Altogether, 15 non-participant classroom observations, 10 interviews with each of the three students and 10 teacher’s interviews were carried out to understand the participants’ self-efficacy phenomena in their learning to write. Findings showed that the combination of different method of collecting data for writing self-efficacy was a feasible way in explaining rural learners’ writing self-efficacy development

    The Contribution of Grade Point Average of Cum Laude Students to the Type and Relevancy of Career

    The success of higher education institutions can be seen from several indicators. One of the indicators is the institutions that can produce outputs and outcomes with the competence in relation to the needs of society. The graduates’ academic achievement can be described through their grade point average (GPA). There were 79 graduates who got Cum Laude predicate at the Department of Islamic Studies, IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang in the 1st Period of graduation which was held on August to September and in the 2nd period on March, from the academic year of 2011 to 2015. The lowest GPA was 3.50 while the highest GPA was 3.93. The graduates who got Cum Laude have worked in several fields of jobs; such as Islamic Religion teachers, staffs in government offices, banks, and political parties both in West Sumatra and out of Sumatra. The study showed that there is no significant contribution of GPA with their career. It implied that GPA will not determine the graduate career either as a teacher on Islamic studies or as a teacher on social science and civics education. It also found that the graduates who work in out of field of studies were caused by the demand of the schools because of lack of teachers

    The Implementation of Authentic Assessment in Cultural History of Islamic Subject

    This research was focused on the implementation of instructional authentic assessment in the Cutural History of Islamic Subject; class VIII, Perguruan Thawalib Putri Padang Panjang. This study aimed at describing the implementation of authentic assessment by teachers in teaching Cultural History of Islam. The design of this research was qualitative and the data collection techniques were observation and interview. The data were analysis by using Interactive Analysis Model of Miles and Huberman. The results obtained indicate that the implementation of authentic assessment had not been fully implemented by the teacher of Cultural History of Islam both in the affective and psychomotor, while the cognitive domain has been performed well

    The Effect of Improvisation Technique towards EFL Students’ Speaking Ability

    The purpose of this research was to determine whether Improvisation Technique gave significant difference in teaching transactional and interpersonal conversation text toward students’ speaking ability. This research was also aimed to find out which components of students’ speaking were mostly improved after using Improvisation Technique. True experimental research was used where the sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling. The result of this research showed that the students had made some progresses. It showed that the mean score of students’ speaking ability in experimental class (79.50) was higher than the mean score of students’ speaking ability in control class (72.21). It means that teaching speaking by using Improvisation Technique gives significant effect towards students’ speaking ability. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that using Improvisation Technique gave significant effect towards students’ speaking ability at class XI of Senior High School 12 Padang. Thus, it is recommended for English teacher should consider the use of Improvisation Technique as an alternative technique in teaching speaking for getting significant effect towards students’ speaking ability

    The Concept of Human Unity and Islamic Inclusive Education: A Study of KH. Imam Zarkasyi’s Thought in Social Change

    This study aims to identify and to analyze KH. Imam Zarkasyi’s paradigm model of thinking in increasing the value of inclusive Islamic education based on human unity value through historical-philosophical approach. The result is that the paradigm model of Tawhid Worldview constitutes rationality value to liberate science bigotry among tribes, ethnic, cultural or religious understanding. Rationality value to build scientific epistemology in Islamic education inclusive curriculum content can be implemented through the integration of social sciences culture of sources of Islamic teachings, the philosophy of Pancasila and socio-cultural diversity of learners locally, nationally and internationally. On the other hand, rationality value will change the learning approach and method, and civilizing values of inclusive education through religious communal environment. The paradigm model can balance value function and mental changes and inclusive personality of local, national and international Muslim generation

    The Effect of Problem Based Learning on EFL Students’ Critical Thinking Skill and Learning Outcome

    This research aims to examine the effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) model to students’ critical thinking skill and learning outcome. It was conducted on the 11th graders of social science program at SMAN 6 Malang. The research material was the problems of demography. Research method was quasi experiment with non equivalent control group design. The data analysis used t-test technique. The research result showed that PBL learning model affected students’ critical thinking skill and learning outcome in SMAN 6 Malang. The average gain score of experimental class is 33.10, higher than control class, which is 16.24. The result of t-test analysis is 0.000 smaller than the significance of 0.05. It is suggested that PBL becomes one of aalternative teaching models that could be implemented to enhance students critical thingking skill

    An Exploration of Students’ Difficulties in Using Critical Thinking Skills in Reading

    This study intends to explore students’ difficulties in using critical thinking skills in reading. The subject of this study was second year undergraduate students of Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, Banda Aceh. This qualitative study analysed students’ difficulties in using critical thinking skills in term of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. A personal interview was conducted to find the data from the students. The result indicates that students’ lack of practicing let them difficult in using critical thinking skills in reading. The other difficulties found were lack of language mastery, implied meaning, background knowledge, repetition and lack of vocabulary. Among six problems discovered above, lack of practicing, background knowledge and language mastery had made the students felt that critical thinking was difficult to be applied

    Agriculture Students’ Ability to Write Past Tense at Taman Siswa University of Padang

    The purpose of this research is to describe the third semester agriculture students’ ability to write simple sentences using simple past tense at Taman Siswa University Padang. This research was limited in three sentence forms; affirmative, negative and interrogative. Descriptive research was used in this study where the population was the third semester agriculture students at Taman Siswa University of Padang. The total number of the sample was 63 students. The finding showed that the ability of the third semester agriculture students of Taman Siswa University of Padang to write simple sentences using simple past tense was moderate. It could be seen that 70.97% students have moderate ability. In detail the percentages of each of form sentence were; 64.52% have moderate ability to write simple sentences in simple past tense of (verbal) affirmative, 74.20% have moderate ability to write simple sentences in simple past tense of (verbal) negative sentences, and 77.42% have moderate ability to write simple sentences in simple past tense of (verbal) interrogative sentences. Based on the research finding, it is suggested to the teachers to give more explanation about past tense and explain the usage of mechanics.  The students are suggested to learn more about past tense and use mechanics correctly

    Analyzing the Issues in the Implementation of Authentic Assessment in the 2013 Curriculum

    The  implemention of authentic assessment  in the   2013 Ccurriculum  has been encountered by various challenges. Teacher have to use numerious instruments, which made them quite which are regarded more complicated. this study focused on the analysis of issues experienced by teachers in implementingng theauthentic assessment within the 2013 curriculum. This study used quantitatif method in which questionnaire was  distributed to the teachers. Population included all teachers in Padang whose schools are applying the 2013 curriculum. 120 teacher were randomly taken as the sample.  The results show that in terms of the affective aspect, the teachers had not yet been optimal in conducting self- and peer assessment for the students, thus the further improvement is seriously recomended. In light of the the cognitive aspect, the teachers had done a very good assessment. They had made a variety of assessment types, especially in the essay and oral tests. However, the assessment of psychomotor aspect was not also optimally done need some improvement. From these results, it is hoped that the teachers can further enhance the assessment procedures of the three criteria for better learning outcomes. The school principals should be able to create opportunities for the teachers to take training in the Applying authentic assessment

    The Values of Moral Learning in “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih†Novel Written by Habiburrahman El Shirazy

    A novel written by Habiburrahman El Shirazy “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih†(when love is connected to God) is decorated by a variety of ideas, values and ways of life. This novel does not only provide narrative story entertained with Islamic values, but also served as media to form public and readers’ morals. Because the story line presented in this novel contained an overview of everyday life containing of moral learning, therefore, it is very interesting to be studied. The current study seeks to uncover: 1) the value of moral learning and value of worship to God’ 2) the value of self moral learning.  The type of research is Library Research using discourse analysis method (content analysis).  It was found out that (1) The moral value of learning to the God contained a message of faith with arguments through the universe.  It let worship of God, be grateful and stay away from vanity. (2) The value of self-moral learning included the value patient, persevering, self-authority, high optimistic, responsibility and self-firm
