The Effect of Using Cooking Academy Game towards Students’ Writing Ability
This study is an experimental research that discussed the impact of the use of cooking academy game in teaching writing on the students’ ability in writing procedure text at class VII Junior Secondary School I Pangkalan Baru Lima Puluh Kota. This study was aimed to determine the effects of the use of cooking academy game towards the student's ability in writing procedure text. In this study, the population is the students of class VII, while sample are two classes: one class for the experimental class and another class for control. Samples were drawn randomly. Data were collected by giving pre-test and post-test on the sample. Data were, then, analyzed applying t-test formula. The results showed that students who were taught to write text using the procedure of cooking academy game has the ability to write higher than students who are not taught by using games cooking academy
Students’ Linguistic Competence in Essay Writing
Writing in a foreign language (English) has been a highly instrumental for EFL Undergraduate learners because they are required to write assignments, papers, and dissertations. Yet, the course offered and passed to fulfill the writing requirements was meager especially in the language content. Hence, this project aimed at finding out the sentence problem made by the students in essay writing. Using 5 data sources from students’ writing, the study was focused on exploring students’ mistakes in the use of cause-effect.  The finding of this study showed that the most sentences problem made by the students in cause-effect essays were 24 sentences problem in run-on sentences and comma splice and the least were 2 sentences problem in choopy sentences
The Effect of Time Token Technique towards Students’ Speaking Skill at Science Class of Senior High School 1 Pariaman
This research aims at finding out the effect of time token technique towards students’ speaking skill. This research was experiment. The population in this research was students at grade XI of High School 1 Pariaman consist of 170 students. Cluster random sampling was used to determine two classes which consist of 68 students. MIPA1 was treated through time token technique while MIPA5 was treated through debate technique. The result of the study showed that the mean score of experimental class was 78.41 with standard deviation 5.39 and mean score of control class was 75.71 with standard deviation 5.35. In order to prove the hypothesis, the t-test score of experimental class was compared with t-table score. It showed that the result of t-test of the experimental class was 2.094 while the result of t-table at a level of significance with α = 0.05 was 1.997. It indicated that the t-score of experimental class was higher than t-table, 2.094 1.997. It means Ho is rejected and Hi was accepted. It was clear that time token technique gave significance effect towards students’ speaking skill
Improving Students’ Mastery on Simple Present Tense Through Climbing Grammar Mountain Game
This study aims to determine whether the use of Climbing Grammar Mountain Game gave significant improvement on students in learning simple present tense. Classroom action research was used in this study where the data were analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The population of the study was the students of grade eleventh at SMPN 1 Luak 50 Kota. There were 21 students in this class. Six kinds of instruments were used to collect data, namely teaching ,scenario, observation sheet, questionnaire, test, interview, and teacher’s journal. This study ran for two cycles. In the second cycle, it was shown that there was gradual improvement from the previous cycle which changed from 64 (insufficient) to 79 (sufficient) of the mean score. it was more than criteria of the students’ mean score which were determined in this study and it was significant because it proved that the students enthusiasm to study simple present tense, it mean that the students liked and were not bored again so this was a motivation for them to more concentrate to study simple present tense and they could use it in daily life for communication. They understand that simple present tense is important in learning English because it is used in daily life, either in writing and spoken language. It could be concluded that Climbing Grammar Mountain Game could improve the ability of the students in class VII B of SMPN 1 Luak 50 Kota in using Simple Present Tense
Effective School Performance Stages at Public Senior High Schools in Indonesia
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the stages of effective school performance based on 11 characteristics of effective schools as well as to evaluate the level of correlation between individual characteristics of effective schools and the contribution of the school principal leadership to an effective school. 60 school principals and 105 teachers in 16 schools became sample of the research. The number of teachers took as many as 7 to 10 people for each school. The quantitative data were obtained through a set of instruments on 11 characteristics of effective schools. The data were then analyzed descriptively using frequency, min score, percentage, standard deviation, and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation, simple linear regression). Findings showed the stages of effective school performance of Public Senior High Schools in Padang as perceived by the principals and teachers were very high. There was a significant correlation between the professional principal leadership with the realization of 11 characteristics of effective schools. The professional principal leadership contributed as much as 58.5% to the realization of 11 characteristics of effective schools in Public Senior High Schools in Padang while the other percentage was contributed by other variabels not included in this study. The principal leadership was an important factor for the realization of 11 characteristics of effective schools in Public Senior High Schools in Padang
Intensive Class Training Model for Developing Lecturers’English Competence at IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang
Research and Development (RD) project was used to develop lecturers’ English competence particularly on speaking and writing at State Institute of Islamic Studies of Imam Bonjol Padang. The lecturers need to develop their competence in English in order to prepare themselves to add new information of lecturing materials and writing papers. Borg and Gall’s steps were used to develop the model. Twenty active lecturers who had s2 and s3 program, who were randomly selected, participated on this research. During the process of the research, observation, questionnaire, and TOEFL test, speaking and writing tests were used to collect the data. The experimental research type and one group pre test- post test design were used to conduct the research. The result of the research showed that 74% of respondents need intensive class training model to develop their English competence. The implementation of intensive class training model gave a significant effect toward lecturers’ English competence. It is concluded that this model is more effective to improve lecturers’ on English competences. Therefore, it is recommended that this model can be implemented at IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang in order to develop lecturers’ English competences and to enhance the quality of lecturers
The Effect of Awareness Raising Technique towards Students’ Achievement and Reading Interest
Reading is one of the primary subjects that should be mastered by the students in language learning. Yet, reading activity tends to be a boring activity. To increase the students’ interest, the lecturers should be able to stimulate the students' awareness in reading. Therefore, this research is aimed to know the effect of Awareness Raising Technique in teaching reading toward students' achievement and reading interest. This research was experimental research. The population was the second year students of English department of Education Abdi STKIP Payakumbuh. There were three classes. The sample was chosen by cluster sampling. The instruments of this research were reading test and questionnaire. To analyze the data, the researcher used the t-test and ANOVA formula 2x2. After analyzing the data the researcher found (1)students who were taught by using Awareness Raising Technique have better reading achievement than those who were taught by using Presentation Technique, (2) students with high reading interest have better reading achievement than those who were taught by using Presentation Technique, (3) students with high reading interest have better reading achievement than those who were taught by using Presentation Technique, and (4) there is no interaction between techniques and students' reading interest toward students reading achievement at the second year English department of Education Abdi STKIP Payakumbuh
The Correlation between Indonesian Students’ Vocabulary Mastery and Their Reading Comprehension
Exploring students’ background knowledge in pre-reading activities suggests the importance of interaction in the process of meaning making which requires appropriate vocabulary. Although many factors constitute students’ comprehension, vocabulary should be the main concern in EFL reading classes. Consistence with this premise, the current study was aimed at proving the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading achievement at the fourth semester of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung. This correlational study involved 70 students taken through cluster random sampling. Vocabulary and reading test were employed to determine the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension. Through Correlation of Product Moment, coefficient correlation between two variables was found to be 0.61 with index correlation in r-table was 0.1617 for α= 0.05, suggesting that the coefficient correlation between two variables (rxy) t-calculated was bigger than t-table. It means that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. In conclusion, there was a positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension at the fourth semester students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alun
The Influence of Principals’ Leadership Styles on School Innovation in Jambi (Case Study in Several Senior High Schools in Jambi)
School leadership styles that affect school innovation is essential to bring schools’ changes. This study aimed to determine school leadership styles and its effect on school innovation at the senior high school level in Jambi city. This study uses ten leadership styles, they are participative, laissez faire, authoritarian, democratic, charismatic, transformational, situational, trust, grid, and three-dimensional leaderships. The framework of the research are developed by associating ten leadership styles with school innovations including (1) the principal's role in doing innovation in the schools, (2) the forms of innovation implemented in the areas of academic achievement, (3) the form of innovations carried out in the field sports and (4) the form of innovations implemented in the institutional field, and (5) the forms of innovation undertaken in the field of school’ culture. There are 32 teachers and 32 principals were taken as samples. This study used mixed methods research. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and correlation. The results showed that the overall principal's leadership style is not sufficient to affect senior high school innovation in Jambi city, this is evidenced by there are only three of those ten leadership styles have positive relationship when they are doing school’s innovations in Jambi city. Thus, the principals should give attention to all the leadership styles to do innovation at senior high school in Jambi city to improve the quality of schools
Mathematics Instructional Model Based on Realistic Mathematics Education to Promote Problem Solving Ability at Junior High School Padang
This research aims to develop a mathematics instructional model based realistic mathematics education (RME) to promote students' problem-solving abilities. The design research used Plomp models, which consists of preliminary phase, development or proto-typing phase and assessment phase. Â At this study, only the first two phases conducted. The first phase, a preliminary investigation, carried out with a literature study to examine the theory-based instructional learning RME model, characteristics of learners, learning management descriptions by junior high school mathematics teacher and relevant research. The development phase is done by developing a draft model (an early prototype model) that consists of the syntax, the social system, the principle of reaction, support systems, and the impact and effects of instructional support. Early prototype model contain a draft model, lesson plans, worksheets, and assessments. Tesssmer formative evaluation model used to revise the model. In this study only phase of one to one evaluation conducted. In the ppreliminary phase has produced a theory-based learning RME model, a description of the characteristics of learners in grade VIII Junior High School Padang and the description of teacher teaching in the classroom. The result showed that most students were still not be able to solve the non-routine problem. Teachers did not optimally facilitate students to develop problem-solving skills of students. It was recommended that the model can be applied in the classroom
