    Promoting Photovoice for Teachers’ Self-Reflection on Multimodal Literacy

    Self-reflection is a concept of learning from experience that dominates teacher educator around the world. It is true that self-reflective is not a natural process since it needs critical thought, self-direction, and problem-solving with personal knowledge and self-awareness. The major premise of the study is that although teachers are repeatedly encouraged to reflect on their teaching and learning, they are unable to do so successfully. Photovoice is a valuable tool to engage teachers in reflecting their own lives outside the school voice their perspectives and share with other teachers, students, and policymakers. Thus, the purpose of this study is to report on action research that investigated photovoice in emerging teachers’ self-reflective on multimodal literacy. To examine this issue, a qualitative study with an action research design was conducted with five junior high school teachers as participants. The data collected through photovoice and analyzed by using SHoWeD Analysis. SHoWeD analysis is the acronym for a series of questions: (1) what do you see here; (2) what is happening; (3) how does this relate to our lives; (4) why are things this way; (5) how could this image educate people.     Measuring Students’ Mathematical Literacy in Culturally Responsive Mathematics Classroom

    This paper aims to discuss students’ mathematics literacy in culturally responsive mathematics classroom. Students were taught by culturally responsive mathematics material and examined with a series of test in order to measure their mathematics literacy level. The data collected in this study are quantitative data in the form of scores on students' mathematical abilities that indicate the level of student mathematics literacy. The research was conducted at MAN 1 Takengon with the two groups pre-test and post-test design to determine the differences in mathematical literacy skills of one experimental group and then compare the results with one control group that was not subjected to treatment. The test consists of 6 problems and designed by based on the domain of PISA 2015 questions on every level of mathematical proficiency skills. The research finds that (1) culturally responsive mathematic teaching gives positive effect to students’ mathematical literacy; (2) the level of mathematical literacy of MAN 1 Takengon students lies from level 1 to level 5. There was no student who able to achieve 6thlevel of mathematical literacy; and (3) After culturally responsive mathematics teaching was implemented, from 24 students, there were 4 students at 1st level, 7 students at 2nd level, 10 students at 3rd level, and 2 students at 4th level, and 1 student at 5th level of mathematical literacy

    Education Empowerment of Madrasah at Fisherman Society in Suku Laut Kuala Tungkal Jambi

    This study is aimed at revealing how is the Empowerment Education of Madrasah at  Fisherman village Suku Laut Kuala Tungkal Jambi Province. Islamic schools are generally born from the initiation of society as a form of concern for the condition of the people, especially children in understanding the special religion of Islam as a matter of doubt. This research is conducted by using qualitative approach, where the stage is based on the opinion of Spradley . Data collection methods and data validity refer to Denzin and Lincoln and Guba. Result search,  Islamic schools gait has contributed greatly to this country not only in providing a religious understanding, but also in participating to educate the children of the nation through the educational process that has lasted tens or even hundreds of years. In its journey, the empowerment of Islamic schools experienced various dynamics, commitment of Islamic school leadership, public awareness and supporting efforts became the issue that made Islamic schools hard to develop as expected

    Human resources are the biggest strength in the management of Islamic educational institutions. The quality of human resources is crucial right now, because competence of human resources who have knowledge and skills will be able to cope environmental changes. Teachers and employees are the key of success in educational institutions. Good or bad performance of teachers and employees will support the competitiveness of schools. Based on this phenomenon, this research reveals the development of educators and education staff in enhancing competitiveness in the Excellent Islamic Elementary School in Bukittinggi City. This research uses descriptive qualitative. Located in Excellent Islamic Elementary School Bukittinggi City. The source of data in this study is the board of trustees, principals, teachers and employees. The techniques of data collection are participant observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. Later on the collected data is analyzed using data reduction techniques, data presentation, and conclusion. All data are approved by validity through a credibility test, transferability test, dependability test and conformability test. The results showed that the development of teachers and employees is done through 1) on the job training, that is, development that takes place during working hours takes place both formally and informally. 2) Off the job training, that is development that has done specifically outside of work. As for the development carried out: a) training in the form of quantum teaching training, workshops for making learning media and parenting seminars, b) rotation position, c) Religious Development, d) Teacher working groups (KKG) and comparative studies. This development aims to improve the competencies of teachers and employees in the school environment so that they can improve the quality of Islamic educational institutions in accordance with the increasingly stringent times.Â

    The Reconstruction of Indigenous Knowledge about Golobe (Hornstedtia alliacea) as a Natural Resource Conservation Study for Prospective Teachers’ Scientific Literacy

    This study intended to measure prospective science teachers' scientific literacy through a conservation course on a natural resource topic. The natural source as the research object was golobe, an endemic plant in Maluku which has been consumed as the traditional medicine by the local community, which was studied for its chemical properties. Golobe is believed to have the properties to cure diseases. The lab testing revealed that golobe contains alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, polyphenols, antioxidants and antibacterial properties. The scientific knowledge based on the lab report was reconstructed using the Science Integrated Learning (SIL) model. The obtained laboratory test results were matched up with the indigenous knowledge of the golobe. The indigenous knowledge of local community on golobe was converted to be the scientific knowledge. Then, the result of reconstruction was applied as the basis of Conservation Education course material development. The research target included prospective science teachers joining the Conservation Education course. The assessed scientific literacy consisted of (1) knowing scientific questions; (2) exploring; (3) identifying scientific evidence; (4) laboratory work; (5) drawing up conclusions; (6) communicating, and (7) demonstrating. Prospective teachers have owned the seven components of scientific literacy after studying natural resource conservation materials. The research concluded that the use of the knowledge reconstruction of Golobe in the North Loloda Tribe, North Maluku, Halmahera Archipelago has an impact on the development of prospective teachers’ scientific literacy

    The Trends of Biology Education Research from 2000 to 2017: A Content Analysis for the Thesis of Pre-Service Teachers

    This study aims to investigate the trend of biological education research (BER) from 2000 to 2017 in the thesis of pre-service biology teachers. This study conducted a series of content analyses of the thesis from two universities. A total 1347 thesis were analyzed in terms of sample, method, design, elements and topics and subject matter. It was found that junior and senior high school were the most popular research sample trends. This study was also found that quantitive, research and development or/and educational design research became the trend of the method most chosen and conducted by preservice biology teachers. This findings were also indicated that descriptive, experimental, and 4-D were design trends chosen by preservice biology teachers. This study was also found that cognitive and media of learning were the research elements are the most chosen and conducted by preservice biology teachers. The next findings showed that system and cell was the most popular of biology topic. This finding also indicated that Digestive System (DS) and Circulatory System (CS) and Features (KF) as the most chosen subject matter trends conducted by preservice teacher

    Empowering Education: Exploring Teachers’ Classroom Practices in Vocational Schools

    This study aimed to reveal the condition of a child-friendly school as seen from the psychological well-being students in school. Lately there have been various harassment incidents that have befallen students and their own culprit; this is allegedly related to their discomfort at school. Interviews and observations were employed in this study.  The participants which were the public high school students were recruited and determined by snowball sampling. The results showed that, generally, students experienced problems; first, psychological well-being was disrupted due to the following reasons: (1)  learning environment which included incomplete classroom and extracurricular activities facilities; (2) teachers’ attribute which included attitudes toward students, show less affection, appreciation and sometimes like to force the will; and (3) inadequate teaching and learning aspects which included poor lesson plans and dense of teaching and learning material. Second, psychological well-being felt by students generally in schools is related to: (1) the atmosphere in the classroom: friendly and not grumpy teachers, fun teachers in explaining the lesson; (2) understanding and easygoing friends who are comfortable to communicate with, and (3) the atmosphere outside the classroom, friendly waiters in the canteen and a comfortable and quiet library

    Character Education through Local Content Curriculum of Budaya Alam Minangkabau

    The study aims to determine whether Budaya Alam Minangkabau subject is able to shape the character of students in accordance with Minangkabau cultural values. The selection of learning strategies, the availability of teaching materials, and learning media determines the success of students' character planting. A Mixed Method was carried out where the population of this study was elementary school teachers in Padang. Budaya Alam Minangkabau is taught in grades 4, 5, and 6. The numbers of elementary school teachers are 939. For quantitative data, a sample of 100 teachers was determined, while for qualitative data the headmaster and school supervisor were assigned. Based on the results of research that has been done, the subjects of the Budaya Alam Minangkabau play a role in the formation of character, namely the planting of cultural values, ethics, morals and local wisdom. Thus, students have a high sensitivity to the cultural values of the region in order to remain sustainable and not uprooted from its own cultural roots. The formation of character in students is a value education, character education, and formal education, character education that aims to develop the ability of all school members to provide good and bad decisions, exemplary, maintain what is good and realize goodness in everyday life to the fullest heart. Through Budaya Alam Minangkabau subjects, students are expected to be able to recognize and become familiar with their own natural, social and cultural environment. Students have the stock, abilities and skills as well as knowledge about the area that is useful for themselves and the community in general, and develop noble values of local culture in order to support national development

    The Roles of School Principal Leadership in Developing English Teachers’ Creativities in Palu

    This research is a descriptive qualitative that explaines and describes any pertinent things related to the school principal leadership and teachers’ creativities which occur now at the research spot. This study aims to investigate the roles of the school principal in encouraging, driving, and directing teachers to be creative in performing their works. Results indicated that in encouraging his teachers, the school principal: 1) provides conducive climate and condition by involving his teachers in designing school programs and by welcoming his teachers’ comments and arguments on any policies he applies or any decisions he takes; 2) introduces and assures his teachers that education paradigm has changed therefore the school should be managed as a business firm in the area of public services where the most thing that should be considered is how to satisfy customers; 3) informs clearly that in evaluating the staffs’ performances he applies reward and punishment policy; and 4) optimizes managerial functions especially in monitoring what happens in the classroom. In driving the teachers, the school primcipal should applies his or her policy and delegates several responsibilities and jobs to the right persons. In directing the teachers he or s lets his or staffs  free to do their best

    Empowering Education: Exploring Teachers’ Classroom Practices in Vocational Schools

    Teaching is indeed a complex provision, which requires teachers being competent in many respects. They should be very knowledgeable in subjects they teach; they should also acquire skills in transferring their subject matters; they need to be skillful in classroom management, and are capable of designing and developing teaching materials. For that reasons, teachers should always engage in professional development to guarantee their best performance. Understanding teachers’ ways of classroom practices is the first step for teachers’ professional development. Therefore, it is timely to conduct a classroom research to explore teachers’ performance, and thus this research explored teachers’ classroom practices in six vocational schools in Aceh. The data was collected mainly through observation of the instructional process in the classroom and in the workshop. The research found several effective attributes of teachers, such as creative, interactive, democratic, intelligent, smart, and well-prepared teachers. The study also identified ‘negative’ teachers’ attributes, such as authoritative, dominated, and withdrawn teachers
