Equifinality, sloppiness and emergent minimal structures of biogeochemical models

Process-based biogeochemical models consider increasingly the control of microorganisms on biogeochemical processes. These models are used for a number of important purposes, from small-scale (mm-cm) controls on pollutant turnover to impacts of global climate change. A major challenge is to validate mechanistic descriptions of microbial processes and predicted emergent system responses against experimental observations. The validity of model assumptions for microbial activity in soil is often difficult to assess due to the scarcity of experimental data. Therefore, most complex biogeochemical models suffer from equifinality, i.e. many different model realizations lead to the same system behavior. In order to minimize parameter equifinality and prediction uncertainty in biogeochemical modeling, a key question is to determine what can and cannot be inferred from available data. My thesis aimed at solving the problem of equifinality in biogeochemical modeling. Thereby, I opted to test a novel mathematical framework (the Manifold Boundary Approximation Method) that allows to systematically tailor the complexity of biogeochemical models to the information content of available data.

Phosphorus-acquisition strategies of canola, wheat and barley in soil amended with sewage sludges

Crops have different strategies to acquire poorly-available soil phosphorus (P) which are dependent on their architectural, morphological, and physiological root traits, but their capacity to enhance P acquisition varies with the type of fertilizer applied. The objective of this study was to examine how P-acquisition strategies of three main crops are affected by the application of sewage sludges, compared with a mineral P fertilizer. We carried out a 3-months greenhouse pot experiment and compared the response of P-acquisition traits among wheat, barley and canola in a soil amended with three sludges or a mineral P fertilizer. Results showed that the P-acquisition strategy differed among crops. Compared with canola, wheat and barley had a higher specific root length and a greater root carboxylate release and they acquired as much P from sludge as from mineral P. By contrast, canola shoot P content was greater with sludge than with mineral P. This was attributed to a higher rootreleased acid phosphatase activity which promoted the mineralization of sludge-derived P-organic. This study showed that contrasted P-acquisition strategies of crops allows increased use of renewable P resources by optimizing combinations of crop and the type of P fertilizer applied within the cropping system

    Mergers and partial tacit collusion

    Get PDF
This paper studies whether mergers may lead to partial tacit collusion, thereby having the potential to induce simultaneous coordinated and non-coordinated effects. We use a Bertrand-Edgeworth model with heterogeneous discount factors to derive conditions for profitable and stable collusion and provide a numerical example. Mergers that change the market structure in a way such that maverick firms are eliminated or colluding firms reach a critical share in total capacity can lead to partial collusion

Studies on the body composition of Fleckvieh cows and validation of various methods of estimating body fat content

    No full text
The aim of the present work was to gain knowledge about the body composition of adult Fleckvieh cows and to validate different methods for the indirect estimation of the empty body crude fat content (LKXL). For this purpose, 30 multiparous, non-pregnant Fleckvieh cows were slaughtered and subjected to a whole-body analysis. These cows were specifically selected according to their body condition score to cover a wide range of body conditions. For processing, the empty bodies were divided into fractions, of which the gastrointestinal tract, liver, organs (including blood), kidney fat and udder were completely homogenized, while only the right half of the body was sampled from the fractions skin, muscles (and adherent tissue) and bone. On the day of slaughter, the following methods for estimating the empty body crude fat content were tested: Body Condition Score (BCS), sonographic measurement of back fat thickness at three measuring points, sonographic measurement of muscle thickness (Musculus longissimus dorsi), intramuscular fat content, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA, five measuring points), skin fold thickness using a caliper (eleven measuring points), fat cell size in retroperitoneal and subcutaneous fat tissue and serum leptin concentration. The live and empty body masses averaged 736 ± 101 kg and 654 ± 106 kg, respectively, with a considerable range of 414 865 kg and 340 804 kg respectively. These values are comparatively high and can be attributed to breeding progress. The empty body crude fat content was 17.1 ± 5.9 % (2.3 - 28.9 %) and 117 ± 52 kg (10 231 kg) respectively. The corresponding proportions for crude protein, crude water and crude ash were 18.6 ± 1.9 %, 57.9 ± 4.7 % and 4.7 ± 0.4 % and accordingly 121 ± 16 kg, 386 ± 45 kg and 30 ± 4 kg. Thus the Fleckvieh cows examined tend to be leaner than those reported in earlier studies, although it should be noted that lean cows were also specifically tested. The most important depots of the LKXL are, in accordance with literature reports, the fractions muscle, bone and gastrointestinal tract. The proportion of the LKXL from the bones decreased with increasing obesity, while it increased in all other depots. The largest changes in the absolute crude fat content as a function of LKXL were found in the fractions muscle (124 kg), gastrointestinal tract (43 kg) and kidney fat (27 kg). The concentrations of the examined minerals in the empty bodies were as follows: 37.2 g Ca/kg dry matter (DM), 20.9 g P/kg DM, 5.11 g K/kg DM, 4.28 g S/kg DM, 0.95 g Mg/kg DM, 195.7 mg Fe/kg DM, 87.0 mg Zn/kg DM and 13.1 mg Cu/kg DM. Significant regression equations could be derived for all tested methods for estimating the empty body crude fat content, but there were large differences in the estimation accuracy. The most accurate in vivo estimation of the empty body crude fat content in a direct comparison was performed with the Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (RMSE = 14.7 kg). Therefore, the method is recommended for scientific issues. The measurement of the retroperitoneal fat cell size also provided fairly accurate estimates of the empty body crude fat content (RMSE = 21.5 kg). As this is an invasive and very complex method, no recommendation for use can be made, as a non-invasive method is available in the form of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. The Body Condition Score (RMSE = 28.4 kg) allowed relatively good estimates of the empty body crude fat content compared to the other methods tested. The suitability of this method in practical feeding management is therefore confirmed. The survey of the live mass also provided a good estimation result (RMSE = 23.6 kg), while the methods muscle thickness (RMSE = 29.5 kg) and intramuscular fat content (RMSE = 3.19 %) were classified in the midfield with regard to their estimation accuracy. The estimation of the empty body crude fat content by means of back fat thickness, serum leptin concentration or skin fold thickness cannot be recommended due to the comparatively high estimation errors (RMSE = 32.1 kg, 36.0 kg and 38.2 kg respectively). In the course of the evaluation of the available results, a close correlation between the amount of kidney fat and the empty body crude fat content was also found. With an RMSE of 14.4 kg, this method is the most accurate of the tested methods and should therefore be preferred if slaughter of the cows is planned. It should be noted, however, that even the better estimation methods for individual animal-related statements are too inaccurate, since the extent of normal mobilization of body fat during lactation is only slightly above the level of the estimation errors determined. The results of the present study should not be applied directly to pregnant Fleckvieh cows, as the data were only collected from non-pregnant animals. The classification of the results in literature reports also showed that data on body fat content and its relationship to the estimation methods tested should be collected for the corresponding target species. Therefore, the expansion of the database for the available animal material should be aimed at. In particular, the methods of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and the in vivo recording of kidney fat should be developed further in the future, as these are promising methods

Social market economy and ordoliberlism : selected institutional aspects and its application in transition countries

    No full text
The dissertation Social market economy and Ordoliberlism: Selected institutional aspects and its application in transition countries analyses the pivotal institutional structures from the perspective of the proponents of social market economy and ordoliberals. Those institutional aspects determine economic development in the long run. In that sense, the research is linked to the contemporary debate on an importance of institutions in determing a long term economic and social progress. The central pillar of order within social market economy and ordoliberalism refers to the importance of stable value of money for efficient exchange and relations between economic agents. The free price order is as fundamental coordination mechanism as it is essential for creation of significant economic and social advantages in national economy. On the other side, in inflatory environment comes to substantial allocative inefficiences. There is as well an important disruptive influence of inflation on the state structures and freedom. The key role in establishing and maintaining the price stability belongs to an independent central bank. It is necessary, but not sufficient condition for it. The stability of prices and the power of central bank to maintain the stability of prices depend on the coordination with the other state instances, especially with the fiscal authorities, and other important circumstances, such as wage development and velocity of money. The second part of the thesis addresses various issues regarding the competitive order and supporting institutional structure for its development. Competitive order is valued as essential for enabling and protecting the freedom, social mobility, minimisation of transaction costs, rise of the exchange and deepening of the economic relations between economic agents. Several requirements have to be met in order to establish a competitive order. First refers to market openness, which is essential for an efficient participation in the world market. Private property regime as a structural right in economy represents the second precondition. Rule of law is the third requirement which is essential for the protection of individual economic agents. It protects them from predatory behaviour of other economic agents as well from the predatory state activities. In order to escape potentially negative impact of the political process on predictability, reliability and impartiality of institutional structure, which is warranted by rule of law, a clear separation of tasks and responsibilities between different elements of state structure is required. Particularly big challenge for the rule of law and its consequence in the form of competitive order is the concentration of private economic power. An establishment of a credible, consistent, and unbiased legal framework is the fundamental prerequisite for limiting inefficiences arising from the concentration of economic power. To intensify and spread state interventions may cause substantial risks in national economy. They jeopardise functionality and efficiency of political system which is essential for the properly functioning of institutional structure. There is, though, enough place for different measures of economic policy if it comes to structural imbalances in the economy. The third part is devoted to the analysis of the guiding ideas regrading the income distribution and general distribution of resources in the conomy. The state measures regarding the redistribution should mitigate the impacts of market failure, as well as market risks and uncertainities. State and the level of the development of the economy and already emloyed state measures are defining possibilities, effectiveness and efficiency of redistributive policy measures. The fourth part empirically analyses different institutional aspects in the transition countries. On the basis of a new de facto index of central bank independence is found that there is a significant effect of it on an economic growth and its volatility. Generally the more independent is a central bank, the larger will be an economic growth and greater its stability. Further, it is determined that the institutional quality measured by WGI exerted a significant influence on an economic growth in transition countries as well. Regarding the inequality, all transition countries recorded the rise of income inequality since the beginning of the transition, which was especially emphasised in the least developed countries

Relative consumption, relative wealth, and long-run growth : when and why is the standard analysis prone to erroneous conclusions?

    Get PDF
We employ a novel approach for analyzing the effects of relative consumption and relative wealth preferences on both the decentralized and the socially optimal economic growth rates. In the pertinent literature these effects are usually assessed by examining the dependence of the growth rates on the two parameters of the instantaneous utility function that seem to measure the strength of the relative consumption and the relative wealth motive. We go beyond the sole consideration of parameters by revealing the fundamental factors that ultimately determine long-run growth. In doing so we identify widely used types of status preferences in which the traditional approach is prone to erroneous conclusions. For example, in one of these specifications the parameter that seems to determine the strength of the relative consumption motive actually also affects the strength of the relative wealth motive and the elasticity of intertemporal substitution

Who are the champions? Inequality, economic freedom and the olympics

    Get PDF
Does a countrys level of inequality affect its ability to win Olympic medals? If it does, is it conditional on institutional factors? We argue that the ability of economically free societies to win medals will not be affected by inequality. In these societies, institutions generate incentives to invest in the talent pool of individuals at the bottom of the income distribution (people who are otherwise constrained in the ability to expend resources on athletic training). These effects cancel out those of inequality. In unfree societies, the incentives that promote investments in skills across the income distribution are weaker. Consequently, the effects of inequality on the ability to win are stronger. Using the Olympics of 2012 and 2016 in combination with the Economic Freedom of the World Index, we find that inequality only matters in determining medal numbers for unfree countries. We link these results to the debates on inequality

Towards asymmetric partnership management against the background of corporate entrepreneurship and open innovation literature

    Get PDF
The disruptive force of digitalisation and the acceleration of the innovation markets are radically changing the way in which large and established organisations innovate and how they bring new solutions to existing and new markets. Large corporate firms have started to rethink their innovation strategy by enabling partnerships with new and smaller innovation partners such as highly-skilled and technology-driven startups. To leverage the full innovation market potential, large firms seek opportunities and mechanisms to effectively manage these asymmetric partnerships and to ultimately generate new strategic competitive advantages. Based on the corporate entrepreneurship and open innovation literature, this dissertation offers broad and deep insights on the still under-researched phenomenon of Asymmetric Partnership Management. By including the perspectives of both partners, this manuscript highlights the necessity for large corporate firms to reconsider their collaborative innovation behaviour in terms of the individual needs of startup entrepreneurs. The results of the empirical studies demonstrate that large firms are willing to learn from the startup community and proactively pave the way for asymmetric partnerships by testing and maintaining new structures, processes, and activities. Large corporate firms invest in a startup-oriented partnership capability to increase the effectiveness of their Asymmetric Partnership Management and to ultimately become an innovation partner of choice. However, startup entrepreneurs are more willing to enter asymmetric partnerships when they perceive large corporate firms to be trustworthy based on different partner selection criteria. The findings of this dissertation contribute to entrepreneurship, innovation, partnership, and trust research and have practical implications for the future orientation and design of innovation and partner management of large firms. In addition to innovation managers, startup entrepreneurs can benefit from these insights and learn to improve their collaborative behaviour and to proactively realise the full potential of innovation-oriented partnerships.
