Textfeedback zwischen Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit - Eine empirische Untersuchung von Peer-Feedback im Rahmen des "Writing Fellow Programms" an der Europa-Universität Viadrina -

    No full text
In 2014 so called “Writing Fellow Programs” are introduced for the first time into the German university scene at the universities of Frankfurt an der Oder and Frankfurt am Main. Meant to foster the development of “good writing habits” (Haring-Smith 1992/2000: 124) these kinds of programs bring together students, teachers and tutors in the work on literacy, texts and (scientific) writing. For the time of one semester experienced writing tutors work together with the teachers and students of one chosen seminar. They make teachers reflect on ways of integrating the teaching of writing in their classes and give students written and oral (peer-) feedback on two texts they have to write in the course of the given semester. These measures are likely to favor the exchange at eye level in between the members of university as well as the development of a “writing across a campus” (Hughes and Hall 2008) community. As the example of the Writing Fellow Program at the European University Viadrina shows, peer tutors have to face a major challenge when working in the program. Being experienced in providing oral feedback, they often lack experience in providing written feedback which may lead to severe communication problems. This observation serves as a starting point for the present study which pursues several goals. First of all it aims at figuring out how Writing Fellows at European University Viadrina provide written feedback and in which ways they take into account the guidelines for oral feedback they learned during their formation. In addition to that the present study tries to find out how written feedback is used and evaluated by students and tutors in the course of the oral consultations. The findings of the analysis will be used to provide general guidance and advice for (future) Writing Fellows who work in the program. The above mentioned goals are pursued by analyzing three types of documents which are: written feedback in form of personal letters and text commentaries as well as protocols which resume the course of the oral consultations. All these documents were drafted by four Writing Fellows who participated in the program in 2014. The method used for the analysis is the “qualitative content analysis” as presented by Philipp Mayring. The results of the analysis indicate that the Writing Fellows at European University Viadrina regard personal letters and text commentaries as equally important. They use both forms of written feedback even if, following the program guidelines, they are not obliged to provide text commentaries. The analysis also indicates that text commentaries are more precise than personal letters which contain more or less global feedback. All in all the Writing Fellows seem to stick to the guidelines for oral feedback they learned during their formation. They even try to add forms non-verbal communication to their written feedback by working with emoticons. Still, one has to state that the Writing Fellows are all struggling with the aspect of directivity. They are, at the same time, correcting the texts of the students and providing feedback, meaning commentaries, which are not necessarily self-explaining and which, therefore, contain potential for misunderstandings. Concerning the content of the written feedback one can say that it is extremely diverse, touching aspects such as the composition and intelligibility of the text in hand as well as punctuation and orthography. In the course of the oral consultations the written feedback – in form of text commentaries – is often used as a guideline for the conversation. The analysis of the protocols also suggests that, during the conversation with the students, Writing Fellows receive a feedback on the quality and helpfulness of the written feedback they provided – a feedback which is not always benevolent. The analysis shows furthermore that too many comments made by the Writing Fellows are not perceived as a motivation by the students but as a personal attack and demotivation. All in all it seems that Writing Fellows at Viadrina University should be more prepared for the particularities of written communication before working in the program. They should probably focus more on the quality of their written feedback than on its quantity and be aware of the fact that their interlocutor is not present and cannot direct immediately to their feedback. Writing Fellows apparently should also keep in mind that they do not need to comment everything that gets their attention in the students’ texts just as they should prepare for negative feedback on their own work

This study engaged in burnout among Bavarian nurses. Objective: Three research questions were investigated in this study. The first research question dealt with the burnout prevalence of Bavarian nurses. The second research question examined relations between health-promoting resources (work environment and organizational climate) and burnout. The third research question pursued to identify insufficient resources of the work environment (WE) and the organizational climate (OC). Method: To measure burnout, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) by Maslach and Jackson (1981) was applied. Organizational climate was measured by the use of the Organizational Climate Measure (OCM) by Patterson et al. (2005). The work environment was surveyed by the use of the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) by Lake (2002). 561 Bavarian nurses participated in this survey. Results: To determine the burnout prevalence, a “three stage method“ by Büssing and Glaser (1999) was utilised. 60 nurses were assigned to stage I, a beginning burnout process, which is exclusively affected by emotional exhaustion. Six nurses were in stage II, also a beginning burnout process, which is exclusively affected by depersonalisation. 15 nurses were in stage III, an advanced burnout process, because they experience both, emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation. Overall 81 of 561 nurses were in a beginning or an advanced burnout process. Furthermore in the course of research question one, it could be indicated, that the burnout prevalence of nurses differed significantly between the hospital units. The results of the second research question showed, that all dimensions of work environment and organizational climate, which were used in this investigation, were associated with at least one burnout dimension (emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment). To highlight is the finding, that the control variable resilience reduces the risk of emotional exhaustion and increases the chance for a better personal accomplishment. Moreover the results showed that male nurses possess a higher vulnerability for depersonalisation than female nurses. In the context of the third research question, dimensions of work environment and organizational climate were identified, which are currently poor or borderline. Poor resources were: staffing adequacy (WE), nurse participation (WE), efficiency (OC), welfare (OC), clarity of organizational goals (OC) and pressure to produce (OC). Borderline resources were: nursing leadership (WE), tradition (OC), innovation and flexibility (OC), involvement (OC) and integration (OC). Conclusion: Burnout symbolizes a workplace-related danger for Bavarian nurses. Work environment and organizational climate as health-promoting resources demonstrate, that they can counteract burnout. These health-promoting resources, particularly the poor and borderline ones, should be promoted by decision-makers of hospitals

Review: "Warsaw. The Jewish Metropolis. Essays in Honor of the 75th Birthday of Professor Antony Polonsky" / Glenn Dynner, François Guesnet (ed.). Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2015. ISBN: 978-90-04-29181-2

Warsaw. The Jewish Metropolis is an impressive collection of twenty five scholarly essays devoted to Warsaw and its Jewish community, from the earliest (mostly illegal) Jewish settlements in the Polish capital in the sixteenth century to the destruction and reconstruction of the Jewish community in the twentieth century. The book is divided into two parts: Part I ("The Rise of the Metropolis") discusses over four centuries of Jewish history in Warsaw prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. Part II ("Destruction of the Metropolis and Its Aftermath") presents new approaches to the tragic events of the post-1939 era. As the editors argue in the introduction to the volume, Warsaw's status of 'the first true metropolis in diasporic Jewish history' was not only about the numbers of Jews living there, but also about the diversity of the Jewish community (p. 2). This element became one of the recurring themes in almost all essays discussing the pre-war period

Review: "Psychiatry in Communist Europe" / Sarah Marks, Mat Savelli (ed.). Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2015. ISBN: 978-1137490919

This is the first book to address the history of psychiatry under Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. In ten chapters the authors compare in a rich diversity of options of psychiatric treatment, cultural and ethnical distinctions, and competition within the East-European psychiatric field. They illustrate a new understanding of research and its interplay between ideology, politics and psychiatry. The contributors debate forms of psychiatric treatment like occupational therapy, shock therapy and antipsychotic treatment. As the articles show, global culture wars and political systems in the 20th century had strong influence on the historical view of psychiatry. The chapters demonstrate that there was substantial political pressure on medical research and professionals. A major advantage of this publication is that each chapter deals with a different geographical area. So instead of counter-narratives, the stereotype of a monolithic Soviet history is divided into several focuses: communist Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, the Soviet Union or Yugoslavia. The interested reader will find precious remarks to aspects concerning the USSR, even though one notices minor gaps such as the lack of a particular contribution on Albania or Poland
