No full textThis aptly titled volume is comprised of intriguing and diverse scholarly essays. Each by a different writer, they all illuminate specific European case studies that also shed light on general aspects of walls, borders, and boundaries in cultural and historical contexts. Represented are various territories and time periods, as well as differing academic, disciplinary, and artistic approaches. According to the Acknowledgments, support was provided by the German Studies Association, and the project emerged from a series of GSA panels marking the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Berlin and the wall are addressed in about half of the essays included. In the Introduction the editors associate the book with the "now burgeoning" "transdisciplinary" "field of border studies" and the "'spatial turn' in the social sciences and humanities" (16-17). Brief definitions and comments on the emergence and significance of these developments would have been appreciated here, even though readers can seek further information by referring to the extensive bibliographies following the Introduction and the book as a whole

No full textPraca pt. „Polska jako peryferie" pod redakcją Tomasza Zaryckiego stanowi interesujące studium z zakresu problematyki relacji centrum – peryferia oraz pokrewnych dyskursów, np. pułapki średniego dochodu, teorii zależności czy szeroko rozumianej teorii systemu światowego. Jest to lektura zarówno inspirująca, co przygnębiająca. Inspirująca w tym znaczeniu, że stymuluje refleksję naukową na ważny temat, przywołując wiele istotnych dyskursów naukowych, co więcej – czyni to z perspektywy prawdziwie interdyscyplinarnej. Przygnębiająca zaś głównie ze względu na konkluzje autorów, wskazujące na trwałość strukturalnych barier rozwojowych Polski. Jest ona jednak przede wszystkim realistycznym głosem w dyskusji na temat miejsca i roli Polski we współczesnym świecie

No full textVor dem Hintergrund einer empirischen Studie zum Crowdworking kritisiert der Beitrag eine z.T. explizit an traditionellen Bildern orientierte Auslegung des Arbeitnehmer*innenbegriffs, rekonstruiert den Begriff des Arbeitsverhältnisses. Zu diesem Zweck schlägt er einerseits vor, den Begriff auf die Arbeit in Organisationen zurückzuführen, und dies andererseits so zu interpretieren, dass die Koordinationsleistungen von digitalen Crowdworking-Plattformen in der Gestaltung von organisatorischen Zusammenhängen angemessen bewertet werden können

No full textWydany w 2017 roku zbiór Migration and Mobility in the Modern Age: Refugees, Travelers, and Traffickers in Europe and Eurasia prezentuje dwanaście prac dotyczących zagadnienia migracji oraz szeroko pojętej mobilności (rozumianej jako „możliwość poruszania się"). Podkreślana we wstępie różnica między tymi pojęciami (s. 3-5) pozwoliła na zawarcie w tym zbiorze artykułów znacząco odbiegających od klasycznych studiów nad migracjami. Dodatkowym elementem mającym łączyć wszystkie rozdziały jest kwestia wpływu tytułowych zagadnień na Europę Środkową oraz Rosję (s. 2). Niestety, ta ostatnia tematyka pojawia się bardzo rzadko

No full textFlorian Peters's aim is to analyse the conflicts regarding politics of memory in late socialist Poland. The main antagonists were the supporters of the "official" communist narrative of Polish – especially 20th century – history on the one hand, and "oppositional" historians that were associated with the Workers' Defence Committee (Komitet Obrony Robotników) and different oppositional groups founded in the 1970s, on the other. These groups were the core of the free trade union Solidarność, emerging in the early years of the 1980s. The main historical source material of this Ph.D. thesis are "official" studies on the history of 20th century Poland as well as self-reproduced "unofficial" studies published in the so-called "drugi obieg", the Polish samizdat. Peters uses Jörn Rüsen's concept of „Geschichtskultur" to examine history cleavage as discourse. He looks for certain discourse patterns that its users were not aware of whilst producing and/or being part of said discourse. However, historical discourse should not be treated as a separate issue in itself, which is why Peters argues that the dynamics of the developments in Poland cannot be understood without taking the interdependencies between social actors and discourses into consideration (p. 31-33)
Sealing Borders? Rethinking Border Studies in Hard Times
No full textThis working paper is based on the keynote lecture held at the International Conference
“B/ORDERS IN MOTION. Current Challenges and Future Perspectives” on November 15,
2018. The talk starts with a couple of snapshots from developments and conflicts in the
Mediterranean in the summer of 2018 in order to conjure up the high stakes of border
studies today. The attempt to seal the maritime border performed in particular by the
Italian government is then discussed within a global framework and against the background
of recent developments in (critical) border studies. The point is made that in
order to understand even the most exclusionary border policies and regimes, there is a
need to take into consideration a multiplicity of heterogeneous bordering devices which
prompt and shape wider transformations of political, social, and economic orders. The
talk closes with an outline from this point of view of some of the main challenges for
border studies in Europe and beyond emerging from the current conjuncture

Originally an immense three-volume work published in Polish, Against Anti-Semitism: An Anthology of Twentieth-Century Polish Writings is a highly curated one volume selection of the "greatest hits" in English translation. [1] With the exception of four essays, which were previously available in English, the essays appear in English for the first time, having been expertly translated by Marczyk. Read together as a corpus of literature confronting historic antisemitism in Poland, the essays critically examine the causes and consequences of Europe's oldest and most pernicious form of hatred in Polish society

No full textPrzedstawiana książka Literatura miejsca. Piśmiennictwo postlandsberskie powstała w Gorzowie Wielkopolskim, przy współpracy wielu działających w tym mieście instytucji kultury, społecznych i naukowych. Autorka gromadząc materiał badawczy, przeprowadziła kwerendy w archiwach polskich oraz w Haus Brandenburg der Stiftung Brandenburg w Fürstenwalde – miejscu gromadzenia artefaktów historii dawnych terenów Brandenburgii. Nawiązała też bezpośrednie kontakty ze świadkami historii – z Niemcami pamiętającymi Landsberg an der Warthe sprzed 1945 roku oraz z nowymi mieszkańcami miasta, przybyłymi w roku 1945 i później. Dzięki ich otwartości i zaangażowaniu w pomoc w badaniach naukowych mogła poznać archiwa rodzinne (listy, kroniki, dzienniki, zdjęcia) w większości nieprzedstawiane publicznie. Autorce udało się też dotrzeć do nieudostępnianych, znajdujących się w rękach prywatnych eksponatów ze znanego landsberskiego zbioru Wilhelma Ogoleita – księgarza i kolekcjonera artefaktów związanych z twórczością Johanna Wolfganga Goethego i Friedricha Schillera. Zbiór Ogoleita był drugą co do wielkości kolekcją goetheanów w przedwojennych Niemczech
