More Catholic than the Pope?: Varieties of "Schism" in the Catholic Church in France 1800-2000

    No full text
This article looks at the evolution of the French Catholic Church from pre-Revolutionary times to the present day in terms of schisms. Beginning with Gallicanism and then through the Constitutional Church, the Petite Eglise, the Concordat Church, Ultramontanism, the French Church of the Twentieth Century, and the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) it traces the relationship between French Catholicism and the Papacy. This relationship has involved issues of canon law, doctrines, ideas, and obedience and, not infrequently, the question of schism as opposed to heresy. In surveying this history, the article questions the concept of schism as defined by Canon Law in its application to the Catholic Church in France. The author concludes that the concept of schism is of very little practical utility either for the Church in France today (not least in its dealings with the SSPX) or for the wider Church in an ecumenical age after Vatican Council IIdepartmental bulletin pape

Time in Memoranda as a Reflection of Time in Testament: A Study of Kokoro by Soseki Natsume

    No full text
The reader of Soseki Natsume’s Kokoro considers the encounter between Sensei and the first-person narrator at the beach in Kamakura as occurring either in the summer of 1908 or 1910. If the time was 1908, the first-person narrator was not yet a 3rd year student in high school. We can interpret that the first-person narrator chose a similar major to Sensei at the Imperial University of Tokyo because of Sensei’s great influence upon him, for after graduation the first-person narrator identified his career with Sensei’s life. However, from the time that the first-person narrator was 19 years old until he was 23, Sensei’s time was spent experiencing the events that are exposed in his testament. When Sensei finished the 2nd year of high school, he finally rejected his aunt’s proposal of marriage between his cousin and himself. This choice led Sensei to break off relations with his hometown. The greater part of the reminiscences in Sensei’s testament is concentrated on the four years from the 3rd year of high school to the end of college life. That is to say, the testament covers the time during which Sensei moved into a war widow’s house, his encounter with her daughter, his living with his friend K and the latter’s suicide, Sensei’s college graduation and his getting married to the widow’s daughter, Shizu. Moreover, this memoranda in the narrative finishes with an act of treachery when the first-person narrator deserted his father, who was nearing his end, and got onto a train to Tokyo, suggesting the scenario in Sensei’s testament in which Sensei killed himself in total disregard of the wishes of his wife. The argument that the novel’s construction parallels the two sections of the narrator and the third part of the novel will become very persuasive if we consider the time process in memoranda and the testament simultaneously.[Article in Japanese]departmental bulletin pape

    First Year Teachers' Reflections

    No full text
This brief article is a follow-up to an earlier reflection written by a small group of Miyazaki International College (MIC) English Teacher Education students (Ike, Ikeda, Kasahara, Kimura, Matsukawa, Maeda, and Stewart, 2003). In that earlier article, five students reflected on their teaching practicum experiences as fourth year students. They have since graduated from MIC and started their first teaching positions in various school contexts. In this article, they share their reflections after teaching in junior and senior high schools for one semester.departmental bulletin pape

The Emerging Pictures of U.S. Foreign Policy Making under the Bush Administration: A Preliminary Attempt

    No full text
This is a brief report documenting the impressions of the teaching practicum experiences of five MIC students enrolled in the English Teacher Certification program. All five students completed their three-weeks of practice teaching at senior high schools in Miyazaki city. These reflections are representative of the class of 2004 and show how the university students struggled with the realities of teaching English in Japanese high schools. The major themes to emerge are: whether it is best to use communicative language teaching approaches, and whether high school students would respond to more student-centred teaching approaches.departmental bulletin pape

Academic Vocabulary: A Comparison of Contextualized and Form-Focused Learning

    No full text
This paper is concerned with comparing two ways of learning academic vocabulary: contextualized learning and form-focused learning. Contextualized learning refers to the process of learning the meanings of new words from contextual clues. In contrast with contextual learning, form-focused vocabulary learning refers to the explicit teaching and learning of vocabulary in the classroom. The results of a collaborative action research project conducted in two content-based classes over a 15-week semester did not show significant difference between the effectiveness of the two vocabulary learning methods.departmental bulletin pape

Variables Contributing to Acculturative Stress in Japanese Sojourners

    No full text
The effects of acculturative stress are becoming more important in today’s society as it becomes ever simpler for people and companies to move between countries. With this in mind, this study examined some of the major factors that have been discovered to have an impact on acculturative stress in immigrant populations, including perceived second language ability, cultural orientation, life satisfaction, and social support. To test the relationship between each of these factors and acculturative stress in a sojourner population, descriptive analysis was performed on a sample of twenty-seven Japanese sojourners working in England. Social support and life satisfaction were found to have the greatest relationship with stress in this sample.departmental bulletin pape

The Saving Power: Aesthetics and the Technological Worldview

    No full text
The philosopher Martin Heidegger’s inquiry into the fundamental nature of technology discovered that in treating everything in the world as a resource to be exploited, technology is a deeply rooted and pervasive worldview that threatens to block out any other way of knowing things, including even ourselves. But Heidegger holds out the hope that reflecting on art as a contrasting way of knowing can rescue us from this danger. Art, while involving technology in its creation, begins with seeing things in a non-technological perspective, The contrast between technology and art as ways of revealing helps to explain the significance of surrealist art and of ready-mades such as Fountain by Duchamp. The intersection of the two modes is especially characteristic of photography as exemplified in the work of Ansel Adams and Minor White. Courses that include aesthetics as reflection on art and its relation to technology are needed in the liberal arts curriculum to counterbalance a dominant orientation of the curriculum towards the technological worldview.departmental bulletin pape
