Willingness to Communicate, Ethnocentrism and Intercultural Communication Apprehension in an Expatriate Population: A Pilot Study
No full textThis is a pilot study to determine the replicability of research by Lin and Rancer (2003) with an expatriate population in Japan. According to previous research, there is a strong negative correlation between ethnocentrism and intercultural communication anxiety on the one hand and willingness to communicate on the other hand (Lin & Rancer, 2003). However, this has only been tested with North American College populations. Lin and Rancer’s (2003) study replicated these correlations and found an interesting sex difference wherein male respondents showed significantly higher levels of ethnocentrism and communication anxiety and lowered levels of willingness to communicate than did female respondents. Using the same survey instruments as Lin and Rancer (2003), adapted for use as web surveys, expatriates living in Japan were surveyed on levels of ethnocentrism, intercultural willingness to communicate and intercultural communication apprehension. Results of this pilot study show preliminary support for Lin and Rancer’s (2003) findings. Discussion centers on possible explanations for such similar results in a sample that would be expected to be quite expatriates.departmental bulletin pape
Activating "Money Talk" among Classroom Learners: A Comparative Study of a Textbook
No full textThe author takes a critical pedagogical approach in making a exploratory content analysis of an EFL textbook written for Japanese college students. The targeted textbook is tested to determine if its rubric activates learner talk on money-related issues using WH-questions at a significantly higher level than comparable textbooks, with positive results. The author suggests that this is misaligned with the needs of the target users and argues that such textbooks are counter-productive to teachers seeking to encourage their students to develop counter-discourses to the dominant economic paradigm through English.departmental bulletin pape

No full text本稿は論者が38年間にわたる教育関係の職にあって、生徒と共に論者自身も教師として啓発されたこと、または教える過程で遭遇した様々な経験をもとにして、学びにかかわる調査資料を交えながら、人が生涯を通じて学び続ける原動力を探ろうとするものである。学ぶことと教えることは相反する事項に考えられがちであるが、実に巧妙に影響しあっている。学習が成立する条件を探り、現在の教育の主なねらいは、どのような仮説を立て、いかに論を進めていくか、その論点と研究内容を明らかにすることにある。This paper recounts some experiences the writer had during 38 years as a teacher and examines the learners' motive power throughout their lives. "For what reasons do people learn?"" What makes people study or learn?" I suppose it is a simple and natural question, but I have researched this theme from the perspective of lifelong education. The present state of students' learning atmosphere is not always adequate. I hope this paper will give some suggestions about learning power through lifelong education and present some ideas on educational prospects in the future.departmental bulletin pape
A Proposed Classification for Understanding Parent Experiences: Hearing Parents and their Deaf Children
No full textHearing parents of deaf children in two different countries, Italy and the United States, were studied regarding the positive aspects of raising a deaf child. Parents in each country were interviewed and observed in interactions with their children. They were also asked to complete journal entries describing their parenting experiences. The parents fell into three categories; Positive Parents, Struggling Parents, and Not So Positive Parents. Utilizing these categories, a conceptual framework was created to assist hearing parents of deaf children and the professionals working with them. No full text小文は筆者が宮崎国際大学の日本語授業「日本語表現II」で行ってきた「翻訳」授業の報告である。授業の目的は日本語能力の育成であり、「翻訳」がどのようにこの目的に役立つか、実際にはどのように授業を進めていったか、その時に注意すっべき点は何か等について述べた。小文は先ず授業で英単語に適切な訳語を考える段階で日本語の感覚が磨かれることに注意する。次に文単にの翻訳で日本語の自然な言い回しを考えることが文章作成の訓練になることを示す。最後に原文の行間・文勢にまで目を配って日本語訳を考えるというところまで進み、これらそれぞれが日本語能力の育成に効果があることを述べる。This paper describes a part of the activities conducted in Japanese Expression 2 in which English-Japanese translation has been utilized to improve student's Japanese Language ability. The paper also describes how the activity is supposed to improve the Japanese Language ability of the students, how the classes have been conducted, and what are the word, then a sentence, and finally a block of sentences. Visitations of the Past: Impact of Hindu Revivalism on Kerala's Popular Culture
No full textThe paper examines the growth of Hindu communalism in India in recent years and looks specifically at the impact it has had on the popular culture of Kerala, the southern most state of India. The first section examines the fascist roots of the ‘Hindutva’ ideology and focuses on the organized attempts to consolidate the Hindu community at the national and international levels and to define the Indian nation as essentially Hindu in nature. The second section looks specifically at Kerala and at how the movement towards Hindu consolidation in the state has been less ostensibly political and more unconsciously cultural in nature. The reasons for this are traced to the unique evolution of the Kerala society that has led to the development of a general secular ethos in the social and political spheres. This operative political conscious has resulted in the formation of a communal unconscious that finds expression in the cultural sphere through various revivalist practices and discourses. The third section examines local language films that deal with revivalist themes and then proceeds to the three inter-related and recurrent patterns of Hindu revivalism --‘aestheticization of the past,’ ‘ethicalization of the past,’ and ‘validation of ancient knowledge systems’ -- and their effects on different facets of Kerala culture.departmental bulletin pape

A Step Closer to Achieving MEXT Goals: Reflections on the 2004 Teachers' Challenge Workshop at Miyazaki International College
No full textIn late August 2004, MIC hosted 156 Miyazaki public school English teachers in a prefecture-sponsored three-day workshop. The participants were aiming to increase their TOEIC scores while gaining practical and theoretical knowledge in communicative language teaching. This article documents the process of the event. MIC faculty members planned, organized and administered the workshop. The article contains reflections from a number of session leaders.
