What Education Can Develop Children's Abilities?
The purpose of this article is to investigate what kind of teaching will develop children's abilities. That is to say, we will consider the best education to promote children's abilities and the best environment for children, especially children before the age of five. In our age, many educational methods for the acceleration of children's abilities have been practiced in Japan. People who conduct some specific education for young children insist on the importance of early education, especially the education of children before the age of three. People who conduct another type of specific education insist on educating children on the basis of psychological or cerebral physiological knowledge. Some people emphasize that every child can develop any ability, other people emphasize that only young children have the possibility of increasing every ability. On their education, those people generally say that parents, especially mothers, give their children a great deal of influence, that is, a mother will develop her children's abilities. We investigated in detail the educational methods that people of the positive opinion for acceleration conducted, and the results suggested that the simple and easy educational methods did not reflect recent psychological and cerebral physiological knowledge, although they insisted that their pragmatic education was founded on psychological and cerebral physiological knowledge. We concluded that education on the basis of psychological and physiological knowledge will be necessary and important in future because of developing children's abilities, but that there is no education that will enable every child to develop any ability. The purpose of this article is to investigate what kind of teaching will develop children's abilities. Subduing the Subversive: Recent Responses to Critical Pedagogy Issues in the TESOL Profession
The explicitly politicised nature of critical pedagogy (CP), and its insistence on locating TESOL within its cultural and ideological context, has provoked a good deal of resistance from those whose activities it critiques. This paper identifies some recent resistance from the TESOL profession to the challenges posed by certain CP issues, particularly in Japan. Several common forms of resistance to CP and identified, with reference to their attempts to invalidate or subdue the subversive function of CP by drawing from conflicting philosophical positions. Counter-responses from prominent CP proponents are outlined, including suggestions for how CP might continue to evolve as a valid research paradigm, despite its requirement for self-reflexivity and resistance to codification.departmental bulletin pape

Old Biases, New Paradigms: A Beginning Look at Counseling in Japan
Counseling, defined as the discussion of one’s problems with a trained professional and implementation of interventions to remedy psychological distress, is a relatively new concept in Japan. The present study involved students enrolled in a university course on Counseling. Students’ perceptions of the role of counselors in Japan and the acceptance of the idea of counseling in Japan were explored. The results of this study suggest that perceptions of counseling have largely been influenced by media representations of counseling and counselors. Cultural biases against counseling were acknowledged, yet a shifting paradigm wherein counseling is being perceived more positively was also discussed. The primary reason for seeking counseling in Japan is reportedly “stress.” Counseling students identified the two components of successful counseling as the need for counselors to build rapport and be perceived as trustworthy.departmental bulletin pape

The Dry Bread and the Jam: The French Catholic Mission in Southeast Kyushu 1890-1927
The initial success of the Catholic mission of the Societe des missions etrangeres de Paris (MEP) in Kyushu was geographically based on Nagasaki and numerically based on the adhesion of many of the 'Kakure Kirishtan', the descendants of sixteenth century Catholics. In the 1890s the MEP tried to expand on these bases by creating new missions in southeastern Kyushu where no 'Kakure Kirishtan' could be found. This article focuses on the history of these missions especially on the contrast between Miyazaki and Amami Oshima, the 'Bread and the Jam' of the title. In Miyazaki the MEP met with little success while in Amami Oshima their success was both impressive and surprising. In describing the history of this mission a number of inter-related factors involving France, Japan, the MEP, and the Papacy are explored and evaluated. Finally, these factors are used to elaborate an explanation for the eventual collapse of the MEP mission.departmental bulletin pape
English Communication Skills Predict Global Perceptions in Japanese Liberal Arts College Students
Japanese liberal arts students completed a battery of surveys asking them to report on their use of communicative English and confidence in doing so. In addition, they answered a survey about their global perspectives. Students who reported greater confidence in their ability to communicate in English also tended to hold perspectives that have been linked to the concept of global citizenship, such as a tendency to resist stereotyping, or to be nonchauvinistic. The results showed that confidence in using communicative English increased with length of enrollment in the college. However, the predictive link between English communication skills and global perspectives was found to be independent of length of enrollment in the college.departmental bulletin pape
