How Accurate are TOEIC Reading Scores in Predicting Performances on Academic Reading Comprehension Tests?
No full textObtaining a high TOEIC reading score requires the use of a range of reading strategies under test conditions. Some of the more important strategies include scanning, skimming, speed-reading, and the ability to identify and eliminate irrelevant information. Academic reading, on the other hand, requires students to analyze texts, make inferences, and to think critically. Given these differences in strategy use, how reliable is the TOEIC reading score in predicting results on academic reading comprehension tests? This paper summarizes ongoing research into the predictive value of TOEIC reading scores. A class of students (n=21) was given 7 passages to read over the course of one semester. After reading each passage, all the students were given a short multiple-choice comprehension test. No time constraints were enforced. At the end of the semester, the cumulative test result for each student was compared with his or her TOEIC reading score.departmental bulletin pape

From Exclusivity to Exposure: The Changing Circumstances of Kutiyattam
No full textKutiyattam, the only surviving form of Sanskrit theatre, has a recorded history of more than ten centuries and is easily the oldest existing performance form in India. Intrinsically related to a complex system of patronage, a direct offshoot of a traditional society based on caste hierarchy, Kutiyattam had been strictly confined to k?ttampalams, the temple theatres of Kerala, the southwestern state of India. Strict features of exclusivity have determined the processes of training, performance and reception through most of its history and have played a major part in its preservation. However, the gradual weakening of temple establishments in the last five decades has led to the formation of other systems of institutional and social patronage. At the same time, the concerted attempts to secularise and modernise the form have resulted in a number of transformations in its different aspects. This paper traces the traditional systems of patronage, performance and features of exclusivity of Kutiyattam, its contemporary changing circumstances, their impact on specific facets of performance, and their implications for the general nature of the form.departmental bulletin pape
Miyazaki Surfers: preliminary study
No full textThis is a report of surfers' perceptions in Miyazaki, Japan. Miyazaki prefecture is located in the Southeastern part of Kyushu island and is well known for maritime sports activities. The study is based on an on-site convenience sample of 202 (male=114, women=88). Short face to face interviews were conducted mainly at the Kisakihama beach and others in the city of Miyazaki. The study reveals the demography of the surfers who were interviewed, their surfing experiences, and perceptions associated with surfing - how important surfing is to the respondent. It also showed some gender differences in surfing life style. More women surf with a body board, women are less committed to surfing activities than men, and many respondents do not feel much sense of discrimination based on their gender in surfing activities. Changing Teacher Education Programs in order to Change English Education in Secondary Schools
No full textIn response to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's (MEXT) goal of "cultivating Japanese with English abilities," Miyazaki International College (MIC) designed its English teacher education program to include a collaboration with its sister high school. One of the goals of this collaboration is to facilitate the development of reflectiveness among prospective teachers. Reflectiveness is a necessary process if transformation in pedagogy is to be achieved--from an exam-oriented approach to one that genuinely cultivates English communicative abilities. Based on the reflective habits of mind advocated by John Dewey, the author will describe the uniqueness of this program and close with students in the program reflecting upon their educational experiences.departmental bulletin pape
Prosodic Changes Caused by Emphasis in English in Connection with Compensation : A Case in Progressive Form of Sentence Pattern II
Get PDF第二文型(進行形)の英語文を音声資料として、英米各1名の英語母語話者が、各構成要素を強調しながら発話した。中立発話と対照しながら強調発話を構成する項のピッチ、長さ、音圧レベルを測定した結果、強調は、程度の差こそあれ、いずれの韻律特徴にも数値の増大となって反映された。また、ある項が強調され、その数値が大きくなるのと同時に、他の項の数値が小さくなるという補償現象も認められた。補償により、話者は、強調項と強調しない項とにかけるエネルギーを調整しながら、ひとつの文を発話する際には一定量のエネルギーを用いることが推断される。そして韻律特徴の数値変動より、話者は、ある項を強調する際には、文章の意味語群をひとつの単位として意識して発話している様子が示唆された。韻律変化の具体例としては、機能語を強調して発話する際には、しばしば強形が用いられるため、内容語より伸張率が高く、機能語が意味語群の先頭に位置した場合は、特に大きな伸張となった。なお、定冠詞は、後続項の強調(伸張)と共に、伸張したが、これは定冠詞と後続項の連結の強さを示唆するものと考えられる。最後に、今回調査対象とした韻律特徴以外にも、ポーズや音質の変化が強調の誘因となることも例証された。departmental bulletin pape
