Teacher trainees learning through action research
This paper describes an action research project that was used in an English-medium teachertraining program in Japan. Trainees chose their own subjects of research, based on one teaching event. They planned a small piece of research, investigated the subject, and then taught a second class. The instructors found that, although there were logistical problems with the project, the students found it helpful and rewarding. Four examples of student projects are included.departmental bulletin pape

This paper describes an exploratory focus group study of MIC’s team teaching approach for lower-division classes, Collaborative Interdisciplinary Team Teaching (CITT). The study was designed to test previous findings from the professional team teaching literature and provide a baseline dataset for a program of further studies into CITT. Content analysis of the data revealed eleven major categories of response emerging independently across the focus groups, primarily concerned with team teacher attributes and secondarily with team teacher interactions. Most categories are well represented in the team teaching literature, although some less common responses also emerged. A number of potential tensions between team teachers’ professional responsibilities with respect to the major categories are identified in the analysis, and these have been used to guide the development of further CITT research.departmental bulletin pape
Prosodic Differences between Comma, Colon, and Dash to Introduce
departmental bulletin pape

Rural Residents' View of Urban-Rural Interchanges : A Case Study of a Rice Terrace 'Ownership System'
Urban-Rural Interchanges have been showing results as an effective rural area promotion measure. Urban-Rural Interchanges the government initiated have emphasized the 'healing' needs of urban residents. Previous research has indicated that this emphasis has lead to insufficient consideration of the rural areas hosting the interchanges. The discussion thus far reflects a need to consider the possibility of developing Urban-Rural Interchanges from the viewpoints of both the urban and the rural residents brought together through the programs. Using NICHINAN City's SAKATANI district's Rice Terrace Ownership System as an example we clarify the meaning of the interchanges for residents in rural areas hosting exchanges. The Rice Terrace Ownership System in SAKATANI district was started in 2002 with the goal of preserving the terraced rice fields. Before the ownership system was implemented two groups in this same district undertook multi-layered activities with the goal of regional revitalization. Considering these points, we undertook interview research among the farming village residents and rice terrace owners. Looking into patterns of exchange, our survey results revealed the following two types. (1) Exchanges taking place during special occasions; providing a force for the integration of the entire local community. (2) Exchanges taking place in typical situations; the individual local residents lending the rice fields to the urban 'owner' are strengthening their relationships with the urban resident. As mentioned earlier above interchanges initiated and organized by local residents are starting to develop as a means of bringing the community together. The 'Ownership system' shows promise as a local society dynamic aiming for rural revitalization.Urban-Rural Interchanges have been showing results as an effective rural area promotion measure. The Relation between Student's Consciousness of the Role of Preschool Teachers and Their Stress during Teaching Practice
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of the stress on the self-consciousness on the preschool teachers during their teaching practice. Their self-consciousness was considered on two points : the orientation toward preschool teacher as an occupation and their preschool-teacher-efficacy. As a sample, 364junior college students in an early childhood education course were asked about their stress during their teaching practice, their orientation toward preschool teacher, and their preschool-teacher-efficacy. The main results were as follows : (1) Student teachers felt high levels of stress about working conditions, and they felt low levels of stress about interactions between them and other people (cooperative teachers, children). (2) Student teachers who felt high levels of stress about fundamental task showed low levels of orientation toward preschool teacher, and (3) Student teachers who felt high levels of stress about fundamental task and interactions with children showed low levels of preschool-teacher-efficacy. These results suggest that (1) During the teaching practice of the students, high levels of stress enhanced a negative self-consciousness on the preschool teacher as an occupation, and that (2) During their teaching practice, it is important to lessen the stress of them (e.g. providing them with social support). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of the stress on the self-consciousness on the preschool teachers during their teaching practice.
