departmental bulletin pape

This paper examines the major changes and developments in the U.S.-Japan security relations during the first decade after the end of the Cold War in terms of the following major aspects: 1) Japan’s concern about the reduction of U.S. troops or military withdrawal of the U.S. from East Asia, and the subsequent reverse concern about possible Japanese “entanglement” in regional conflicts in which the U.S. is involved, in such major areas as the Korean Peninsula and the Taiwan Strait; 2) the question of “re-definition” or “reaffirmation” regarding the strengthening of U.S.-Japan security arrangements; and 3) the inter-relationship between the two major roles of the U.S.-Japan Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty: the defense of Japan and the maintenance of stability in East Asia.departmental bulletin pape

The high price of peace: the catholic church and Japanese nationalism 1926-1945

The MEP (société des missions-etrangères de Paris), a French Catholic missionary society, had founded the Catholic Church in modern Japan in the 1850s. Despite many challenges the Catholic Church in Japan had grown significantly by the beginning of the twentieth century. The first twenty years of the Showa period, however, were a time of extreme nationalism and war for Japan. The Catholic Church and particularly the missionaries of the MEP had to deal with these pressures and especially with the issues of State Shinto and the indigenization of the Japanese Catholic hierarchy. The MEP were caught between the policies of Vatican diplomacy, the aspirations of the indigenous Japanese Clergy, and their own (often divided) assessment of the situation. This article looks at the different strategies adopted by the Catholic Church in Japan and the MEP in this period, and at the high price they both had to pay to secure the peaceful survival of the Catholic Church in this often-hostile environment.departmental bulletin pape

The Relationship among Preschool-Teacher-Efficacy and Stress during Teaching Practice and the Process of Help-seeking

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to examine how preschool-teacher-efficacy influences stress during teaching practice through the process of help-seeking. The process of help-seeking during teaching practice consisted of need for help, help-seeking behavior, and receiving help. A sample of 182 Japanese junior colledge students participated in this study. The main results were as follows: (1) A high level of need for help was not fully reflected in help-seeking behavior. This result suggested that student teachers do not actively seek help with their work during teaching practice despite their need for help. (2) Student teachers who felt low levels of preschool-teacher-efficacy showed high levels of need for help. (3) Need for help leads to help-seeking behavior and help-seeking behavior leads to receiving help. (4) Student teachers who felt they did not get enough help showed high levels of stress during teaching practice. The results of this study suggested that help-seeking behavior is important for student teachers to lessen the stress during their teaching practice. The aim of this study was to examine how preschool-teacher-efficacy influences stress during teaching practice through the process of help-seeking. Prosodic Traits of Question Mark in the Middle of a Sentence to Express Doubt or Irony

departmental bulletin pape

A Study on Coping with the Problem of Nonattendance at School

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to investigate how to cope with the problem of nonattendance at school for a long time. There were 123, 358 children in 2004 who were absent from primary schools and junior high schools more than 30 days in a year, which is one of the big issues for education at school in Japan. We investigated that problem by many official reports and books, and furthermore researched it by means of an interview with teachers of three primary schools. The number of non-attending school pupils has decreased from the year 2001, but the rate of nonattendance at school has not changed greatly during the past few years and the number of non-attending pupils in 2004 is twice as many as that in 1991. The number of those pupils has remained a high level. The cause of nonattendance at school is related to family life and school life. The problem is mainly caused by parent-child relationships for primary school children and peer relationships for junior high school pupils. For the last four years, Miyazaki has been one of the five prefectures with the lowest rates of nonattendance at school. Miyazaki is also one of the five prefectures with the lowest ratios of bullying and violent behavior in public schools (primary schools, junior high schools and high schools). Miyazaki is the only prefecture which has such low ratios for both nonattendance and bullying and violent behavior. There are three reasons why there is a low rate of nonattendance at school in Miyazaki. One of the reasons is that there are few incentives for pupils to play in any other place rather than go to school. Another reason is the personality of the people of Miyazaki prefecture who are easy-going, calm, genial and lack a competitive spirit. The third reason is that teachers in schools have faced the problem positively and continuously with families and related agencies. We think that the last reason is the most important to cope with the problem, however any problem is complicated and there is no easy way to settle problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate how to cope with the problem of nonattendance at school for a long time.
