Tatbiqu Kitabi Durusi al-Lughati al-‘Arabiyyati al-Juz’i ats-Tsani fi Ta‘limi al-Lughati al-‘Arabiyyati li-Tullabi as-Saffi ats-Tsamini bi-Ma‘hadi Nuri al-Hakim: Implementation of Durus Al-Lughah Al-‘Arabiyyah Volume II in Arabic Language Learning for Eighth-Grade Students at Nurul Hakim Modern Islamic Boarding School
Arabic language learning in modern Islamic boarding schools plays a vital role in equipping students with the ability to comprehend Arabic texts and to communicate both orally and in writing. However, in practice, Arabic language instruction still faces several challenges, including differences in students’ basic competencies in vocabulary mastery, grammatical knowledge (qawāʿid), and reading comprehension, as well as limitations in instructional media. These conditions require the availability of systematic teaching materials and appropriate instructional methods to ensure effective learning. Therefore, this study aims to describe the implementation of the textbook Durūs al-Lughah al-ʿArabiyyah, Volume II, by Imam Zarkasyi and Imam Syubani in Arabic language instruction for eighth-grade students at the Modern Islamic Boarding School Nurul Hakim Tembung. This textbook was selected due to its systematic structure, which begins with basic vocabulary and grammar and is complemented by exercises that support the development of language skills. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach through field research and library research. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and verification techniques. The findings indicate that Arabic language learning for eighth-grade students using the textbook Durūs al-Lughah al-ʿArabiyyah was implemented through lecture, question-and-answer, and group-work methods to facilitate students’ understanding of vocabulary, grammar, and the language exercises (tamrīn lughawī) contained in the textbook. Thus, the implementation of this textbook is considered fairly adequate; however, it still requires innovation in instructional methods and learning media to achieve more optimal learning outcomes.

Screen Time vs. Speaking Time: A Qualitative Comparison of Speech Development in Toddlers with Different Gadget Use Patterns
Purpose – This study investigates how different gadget use patterns affect toddler speech develop-ment, addressing concerns about passive screen time limiting verbal interaction opportunities.Design/methods/approach – A qualitative case study design was used to gain in-depth insights into children’s behavior in their social context. Participants were selected purposively based on parental reports of gadget use. Inclusion criteria were toddlers aged 1 year 8 months to 4 years (M = 2.75 years) with typical development and no diagnosed disorders. Exclusion criteria included neurological conditions and prior speech-language therapy. The final sample consisted of 16 toddlers (7 girls, 9 boys), categorized into intensive users (frequent, prolonged exposure to non-interactive content) and limited users (gadgets used mainly for calls or video chats with relatives). Data collection included semi-structured parent interviews (30–45 minutes), naturalistic observation, and developmental screenings by a licensed child psychologist. Validity was ensured through triangulation and member checking. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis involving coding, categorization, and theme development.Findings – Thematic analysis identified three key themes: rich verbal interaction fosters early speech, passive screen exposure hinders language acquisition, and early or unsupervised gadget use disrupts developmental timing. Children with limited gadget use developed age-appropriate speech, used spontaneous verbal expressions, and required no speech therapy. In contrast, toddlers with intensive gadget use showed limited vocabulary, reduced responsiveness, and in many cases required speech therapy. These developmental disparities were closely linked to differences in caregiver interaction, content type, and exposure duration.Research implications/limitations – This study offers contextual insight from Indonesia using triangulated qualitative methods, though its small sample limits generalizability. Broader, mixed-method studies are recommended.Practical implications – The findings emphasize limiting passive gadget use and encouraging active verbal interaction. Parenting programs and early education should promote language-rich environments and conscious media use. Digital tools should support interactive, not passive, use. Early intervention, including parental involvement and therapy, is essential.Originality/value – This study adds to the discourse on early media exposure by offering practical insights for parents, educators, and policymakers to support toddlers’ speech development.Paper type Research pape
The Effect of Modified Bombik Play Activities on Children’s Creativity: A Pre-Experimental Approach in Early Childhood Education
This study investigates the impact of modified bombik play activities on the creativity of children aged 5–6 years at Sani Ashilla II Kindergarten in Padang, Indonesia. Initial classroom observations indicated low levels of creativity, marked by children’s dependency on teacher models and lack of initiative. Employing a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental One Group Pretest–Posttest Design, the study involved 12 purposively selected participants from a population of 82. Data were gathered using structured observation sheets based on early childhood creativity indicators and analyzed with normality, homogeneity, and paired-sample t-tests. Results revealed a statistically significant improvement in creativity scores (t = 32.601 > t-table = 2.131; p < 0.05), demonstrating the effectiveness of the modified bombik play intervention. The findings underscore the pedagogical value of culturally contextualized and developmentally appropriate play-based media in fostering children\u27s imagination, initiative, and expressive abilities. This study contributes to early childhood education by offering empirical support for integrating creative media innovations, particularly those that are low-cost, tactile, and visually stimulating. However, the absence of a control group and the small sample size limit the generalizability of the results. Moreover, the short intervention duration may not capture long-term developmental impacts. Future research is recommended to involve larger and more diverse samples, utilize experimental or quasi-experimental designs with control groups, and explore longitudinal effects of creative play. These steps would strengthen the evidence base for incorporating play-based strategies into national early childhood curricula and policy frameworks
Improving Early Literacy Through Kamishibai Storytelling: Action Research in an Indonesian Kindergarten
This study investigates the effectiveness of the Kamishibai storytelling method in improving early childhood literacy skills among children aged 5–6 years. A classroom action research design was employed, consisting of two cycles conducted at TK Aisyiyah 16 Surabaya. Cycle I was implemented from February 12–13, 2024, and Cycle II from February 19–20, 2024. Each cycle followed the four core stages of action research: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research involved 15 children from Group B1 and utilized participatory observation as the primary data collection technique. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods based on literacy performance indicators, including the ability to appreciate reading, respond to story content, recognize narrative elements, and retell stories. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in children\u27s literacy development following the application of the Kamishibai method. In Cycle I, 13% of participants were categorized as Beginning, 47% as Achieving, and 20% as Exceeding. By Cycle II, no children remained in the Beginning category, while 66.67% were categorized as Achieving and 33.33% as Exceeding. These outcomes indicate that the Kamishibai method—when applied with appropriate storytelling techniques such as expressive voice, visual cues, and interactive engagement—can significantly enhance children\u27s reading interest, comprehension, and narrative skills. The study contributes to the field of early childhood education by emphasizing the role of expressive, visual-based storytelling in fostering foundational literacy. However, limitations include the small sample size and single-site design, which restrict generalizability. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of Kamishibai through longitudinal and mixed-method studies in diverse educational settings. The findings support the potential of Kamishibai as an engaging and inclusive literacy strategy that integrates narrative structure with multimodal learning to support early language development
