Quality Assurance in Faith-Based Education: A Case Study of MA Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Yogyakarta
Purpose – This study aims to examine the quality assurance system at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Yogyakarta and to analyze how institutional policies align with graduate outcomes and stakeholder satisfaction within a faith-based secondary school context.
Design/methods – This research employs a qualitative single-site case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with school leaders and teachers, direct classroom and institutional observations, and document analysis of internal policies and quality assurance records. The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis, supported by triangulation, member checking, and audit trails to ensure trustworthiness.
Findings – The findings reveal that strong religious culture, structured disciplinary systems, adaptive pedagogy, teacher professionalism, and strategic utilization of facilities contribute significantly to high graduate quality and positive stakeholder perceptions. Graduates demonstrate discipline, religious commitment, resilience, communication skills, and collaborative competence. However, challenges remain, including limited digital integration, uneven student participation in quality assurance processes, restricted technology access for boarding students, and limited dissemination of teaching innovations beyond the institution.
Research implications/limitations – This study is limited by its single-case qualitative design and reliance on participant perspectives, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings. Future research should adopt comparative or mixed-method approaches across multiple madrasah to deepen understanding of quality assurance implementation in diverse faith-based educational contexts.
Practical implications – The study suggests that quality assurance in Islamic secondary education should be multidimensional, integrating academic, spiritual, social, and managerial dimensions. Schools are encouraged to strengthen technology-enhanced quality assurance systems, expand student involvement in evaluation processes, and promote structured professional development and knowledge-sharing mechanisms to support continuous improvement.
Originality/value – This study contributes original empirical insights into the enactment of quality assurance at the madrasah level, an area that remains underexplored in the literature. By providing a context-sensitive analysis of quality assurance in a faith-based secondary school, the study bridges policy-level discussions and everyday school practices, offering a nuanced model for improving quality assurance in Islamic education

Implementasi Inovasi Metode Reward dan Punishment dalam Menegakkan Kedisiplinan Berbahasa Santri Pondok Modern Ar-Risalah Ponorogo
Initial observations indicate that approximately 68% of students tend to use non-formal language outside of instructional activities, especially when interacting with their peers. This condition is related to the students’ low internal motivation to use foreign languages and the strong influence of a social environment that supports the use of their mother tongue. In this context, the reward and punishment method has become one of the strategies widely applied by educational institutions to enforce discipline, as it has been proven to motivate learners to achieve and behave positively. At Pondok Modern Ar-Risalah Ponorogo, this method is employed to enforce language discipline through various innovative practices. This study aims to investigate these forms of innovation in order to enhance students’ language discipline. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach using observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal several innovations in the implementation of reward and punishment, including rewards in the form of gifts, praise, and entertainment, as well as punishments such as memorizing vocabulary, writing stories in Arabic or English, and wearing a special vest as a reminder of discipline. These innovations have proven effective in improving students’ language discipline, and activities such as muhadorah, muhadasah, drama competitions, and speech contests further strengthen a language-rich environment that supports the continuous development of students’ language skills
Pengaruh Bi’ah Lughowiyyah terhadap Maharah Kalām dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Arab
The limited of speaking skill among learners of Arabic remains a common issue in many Islamic educational institutions. Although Arabic is formally taught, many students are still unable to use it effectively as a means of communication. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach to investigate the influence of bi’ah lughawiyyah on maharah kalām among 136 students of MTs Muallimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. A Likert-scale questionnaire was used as the research instrument, developed based on theoretical indicators of language acquisition and speaking skills. Data were analyzed using normality tests, linearity tests, and simple linear regression through SPSS. The findings revealed that students’ bi’ah lughawiyyah was in the high category, while their maharah kalām ranged from moderately good to high. Regression analysis indicated a significant influence between the two variables Sig. 0.000 < 0.05 with a contribution of 13.7%. These results indicate that a stronger language environment corresponds to higher speaking ability, although other factors also play a role. In conclusion, bi’ah lughawiyyah contributes significantly to the improvement of maharah kalām, but it is not the sole determinant of speaking competence

The Relevance of Alexander Sutherland Neil\u27s Humanistic Education to the Merdeka Curriculum in Promoting Student Autonomy
Education that places student freedom and autonomy at the core of the learning process is becoming increasingly relevant in efforts to shape education that humanizes humanity. This article examines the relevance of Neill\u27s educational thinking to the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum. This research is a literature review using a comparative qualitative approach, aiming to analyze Alexander S. Neill\u27s thoughts on humanistic education and compare them with the Merdeka Curriculum principles, particularly in developing student autonomy. Data was collected through documentation techniques, namely by searching and selecting literature such as books and scientific articles published in relevant national and international journals using keywords such as "A.S. Neill," "humanistic education," "Summerhill School," "Merdeka Curriculum," and "student autonomy" in various scientific databases such as Google Scholar and Scopus over the past 10 years. The core concept of Neill\u27s educational approach is student freedom. He believed that excessive pressure and control from teachers and the curriculum fostered anti-learning attitudes, dishonesty, and emotional damage in children. At Summerhill, students are not required to attend specific classes and can choose activities based on their interests and readiness. Some principles of the Merdeka Curriculum that support student freedom include emphasizing differentiated learning, the principle of freedom realized through the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5), and student-centered learning. Both place students as active subjects in the educational process, emphasize freedom\u27s importance and encourage teachers to act as facilitators in a supportive learning environment. This relevance can be understood through the framework of humanistic education theory, particularly Abraham Maslow\u27s view on self-actualization, Carl Rogers\u27 perspective on student-centered learning, and the Self-Determination Theory of Motivation, which emphasizes the importance of autonomy, competence, and relationships in fostering intrinsic motivation
