Back to Surau: Redefining Early Childhood Character Education Through the Lens of Minangkabau Culture

    No full text
Purpose – This study aims to explain the rationale behind the "Back to Surau" research, particularly the importance of the surau-based approach in early childhood character education. The study is motivated by concerns over the degradation of children\u27s moral values and the belief that re-establishing the surau as a center for character education can strengthen moral and noble values in early childhood.Design/methods/approach – This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of Quran teachers, parents, and community leaders in integrating surau values into early childhood character education. A total of 23 purposively selected participants were involved, including 5 Quran teachers, 6 parents, 2 traditional or religious leaders, and 10 early childhood children (through observation). Data were collected via semi-structured interviews, participatory observation at four selected suraus (two in regency areas and two in urban settings), and document analysis. Thematic analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s (1994) framework—data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing—while van Manen’s phenomenological principles guided the interpretation. Research ethics were maintained through informed consent, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity.Findings – Six major themes emerged. First, the surau functions as a center of moral and spiritual learning for young children. Second, community involvement and local culture in the surau enrich character education. Third, integrating religious values and local wisdom into daily activities is effective in shaping positive character. Fourth, meaningful learning experiences in the surau foster empathy, discipline, and responsibility. Fifth, support from families and surau management is a key success factor for this approach. Sixth, challenges such as time constraints and modern lifestyles must be addressed when adapting surau values to the formal education context.Research implications/limitations – This study is limited to a specific cultural community (Minangkabau), limiting the generalizability of the results. However, the findings provide insights into the potential of local wisdom as a character education strategy.Practical implications – This study encourages early childhood educators and policymakers to integrate surau-based approaches into curricula and school activities. This approach can serve as a model for character building through collaboration among schools, families, and communities.Originality/value – This research is original in reviving the role of the surau and Minangkabau local wisdom in early childhood education. Its novelty lies in integrating a local traditional institution with modern educational practices to strengthen the character of the young generation.Paper type Research pape

    No full text
This study analyzes the content of the Komik Seri Pengenalan Anti Gratifikasi, an anti-corruption comic series for early childhood education published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. It addresses the lack of educational media that introduce anti-corruption values to young children. The aim is to identify the character values presented in the comics and evaluate their relevance as tools for character education. The comics are intended to instill core anti-corruption values such as honesty, responsibility, hard work, and caring. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and content analysis, the study examines how these values are conveyed through storylines, characters, dialogue, and illustrations. Data collection was conducted through close reading and detailed note-taking of each comic in the series. Findings indicate that the comics effectively present ethical principles, especially honesty, which is consistently portrayed as a key value in preventing corruption. Through engaging stories and relatable characters, the comics promote positive behaviors like speaking the truth, returning lost items, and admitting mistakes. Responsibility and hard work are also illustrated in scenarios where characters take ownership of their actions and strive to reach their goals. The study highlights the comics’ ability to connect with children through real-life situations, encouraging moral development in an age-appropriate and visual format. This makes abstract values more concrete and easier for early learners to understand. As a result, the comics are deemed adequate for early childhood character education. However, the research also notes the potential to expand the values represented, such as courage and independence, to strengthen the moral message further. Overall, the study supports the use of educational comics as a valuable medium for fostering anti-corruption awareness and building a strong ethical foundation from an early age

Problems of motor development delays in early childhood remain prevalent, often linked to decreasing levels of physical activity and the rising use of digital gadgets. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the interactive game JENAKA (Jelajah Fauna Kalimantan/Exploring Kalimantan’s Fauna) in stimulating motor development in children aged 5–6 years. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental design with a One Group Pretest–Posttest structure. The participants consisted of 18 children selected through saturated sampling, and the intervention was conducted over ten sessions between July and October 2024. Data were collected through structured observation using a motor skills instrument adapted from established measures, comprising 17 items across two domains: gross motor skills and fine motor skills. Expert validation confirmed content appropriateness, and the instrument demonstrated acceptable reliability. Data analysis involved tests of normality and homogeneity, followed by paired samples t-test using SPSS. Results revealed a significant improvement in motor skills after the intervention, with a significance value of .001, well below the .05 threshold. These findings indicate that JENAKA effectively enhanced both gross and fine motor skills, demonstrating its potential as an innovative learning medium in early childhood education. The novelty of this study lies in integrating local cultural and ecological elements, particularly Kalimantan’s fauna, into interactive play, thereby fostering not only physical development but also environmental awareness. The research highlights the importance of culturally grounded, play-based interventions and provides practical implications for curriculum design, suggesting that interactive cultural games can serve as engaging and holistic tools for stimulating early childhood development

    No full text
Purpose – This study aims to: (1) analyze the role of self-compassion in dealing with negative body image and the factors influencing it among female adolescents; (2) explore the contribution of moral education to the development of self-compassionate attitudes; and (3) evaluate the impact of self-compassion on the psychological and social well-being of female adolescents in Islamic schools. This research addresses the limitations of previous studies, which predominantly employed quantitative approaches and have not contextually addressed spiritual values. Design/methods/approach – This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Four female adolescents from Muhammadiyah Junior High Schools 7 and 8 in Surakarta were purposively selected based on their experiences with negative body image. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document studies, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s technique. Data validity was enhanced through triangulation of methods, sources, and theories. Findings – The study found that self-compassion functions as a protective mechanism that helps female adolescents manage social pressures related to the body. The three main dimensions of Neff’s framework—self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness—were identified in the participants’ narratives. Moral education that internalizes Islamic values such as gratitude (syukur), contentment (qanaah), and sincerity (ikhlas) contributed to self-acceptance and psychological resilience. Self-compassion also had a positive impact on increasing self-confidence, emotional calmness, and healthy social relationships. Research implications – The findings recommend a reformulation of the Islamic Religious Education curriculum to be more responsive to adolescents’ psychosocial issues, as well as the development of spiritual mentoring programs and Islamic media literacy to promote positive body image and emotional well-being among students

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Deep Learning approach in the teaching of Fiqh Munakahat at MA Fatihul Ulum Prajjan Camplong Sampang. This approach is examined as a strategy to create meaningful learning that promotes higher order thinking skills. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with educational phenomenology design. The findings indicate that Deep Learning in Fiqh Munakahat is implemented through curriculum integration based on the Ministry of Religious Affairs Decree No. 183 of 2019, enriched by classical Islamic texts such as Fath al-Qarib and Bidayat al-Mujtahid, and expanded with contemporary social themes including child marriage, online marriage, and women’s rights in Islam. The instructional strategies include Problem-Based Learning, Inquiry Learning, and Reflective Dialogue, which foster cognitive engagement and spiritual reflection. Teachers also employ the maqāṣid al-Sariah framework to help students grasp the moral and social purposes behind each legal ruling. Authentic assessment methods—contextual tests, group projects, and reflective journals—replace rote memorization with competency-based evaluation. The application of Deep Learning significantly enhances students’ legal analysis skills, critical awareness of contemporary issues, and moral-spiritual maturity. Consequently, this approach contributes innovatively to developing Fiqh Munakahat instruction that is meaningful, contextual, and character-building

    No full text
This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Industrial Work Practice Program (Prakerin) at Private Vocational High School (SMKS) TI Muhammadiyah 11 Sibuluan using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model. The gap between vocational school graduates’ skills and industry needs remains a significant challenge for vocational education in Indonesia, while most previous studies have focused only on implementation issues without offering a comprehensive evaluation framework that addresses each school’s unique context. Employing a qualitative, evaluative approach, this research collected data through participant observation, in-depth interviews with 15 informants (including the principal, supervising teachers, industry partners, and students), and document analysis. Data validity was ensured by source and method triangulation, member checking, and peer debriefing. The findings reveal that the Prakerin program is effective in enhancing students’ technical competencies, supported by a strategic location, dual-supervision system, intensive monitoring, and comprehensive preparatory training. However, the development of soft skills—particularly leadership and initiative—remains suboptimal and requires further improvement. The implementation of a self-funding model through government grants (BOS) demonstrates strong institutional commitment and removes economic barriers for students. This study affirms the validity and relevance of the CIPP model in evaluating industrial work practice programs and provides recommendations for a more structured soft skills development strategy, as well as the innovation of sustainable industry partnership models. The novelty of this research lies in its application of a multidimensional analysis that integrates contextual, input, process, and outcome factors within the specific setting of a vocational secondary school

    No full text
The integration of Islamic values and modern management theories in educational management represents a strategic response to the challenges of contemporary education. Islamic values such as trust (amanah), honesty, justice, responsibility, and deliberation provide strong ethical foundations that can synergize with modern management principles, including efficiency, effectiveness, transformational leadership, Total Quality Management (TQM), and data-driven decision-making. This integration enables the development of an educational management system that not only emphasizes academic excellence, but also prioritizes character formation, moral integrity, and spiritual development. This study employs a qualitative approach through library research, using content analysis of relevant academic literature, scientific journals, books, and policy documents related to Islamic education management and modern management theory. The analysis focuses on synthesizing key management concepts such as POAC (Planning, Organizing, Mobilizing, and Controlling) with core Islamic values to construct a holistic and value-based management framework. The findings indicate that the integration of Islamic values with modern management theories can strengthen institutional governance, enhance leadership effectiveness, and support sustainable quality improvement in educational institutions. This conceptual study contributes to the development of an integrative educational management perspective that balances spirituality, ethics, and modern organizational effectiveness, while providing a theoretical foundation for future empirical research in Islamic education management
