New Wineskin Mentoring: Fostering Cultural Intelligence among Pioneers Team Leaders
No full textThe global missionary movement calls for culturally intelligent leaders. Recent changes in world Christianity have transformed the cross-cultural missionary profile. In the last two decades, the global missionary force has become a diverse mosaic with the influx of new cultures, languages, and perspectives from majority world churches. In light of these changes, worldwide missionary organizations, such as Pioneers (PI), find themselves at a defining crossroads. They can either “fight, flee or freeze” (Bolsinger 2015, 1663) or capitalize on incredible opportunities enabled by a new paradigm in world missions.
In this dissertation, I design a mentoring program—New Wineskin Mentoring (NWM)—to enhance culturally intelligent leadership. The proposed model utilizes multicultural team environments to mentor leaders through reflection-in-action. In part I, I employ instructional design principles to establish a context-sensitive mentoring model, NWM, which I later use as both a research framework and an application template. Then I survey the literature on cultural intelligence, adaptive leadership, and mentoring to inform NWM. In part II, I utilize interviews, document analysis, and participant observation to perform an appreciative contextual analysis on three thriving PI teams. My field research further fleshes out positive core themes related to the success of select PI multicultural teams. In part III, I draw conclusions from my findings to inform NWM, which leads to a learner-centered modus operandi.
Based on the research presented in this paper, I claim that although mission organizations have traditionally used event-based approaches for cross-cultural leadership training, experiential learner-centered mentoring optimizes leadership development for PI multicultural teams because it capitalizes on intercultural environments to enhance cultural intelligence.
NWM leverages research conclusions to foster cultural intelligence among PI team leaders. By doing so, it helps international organizations and the worldwide church become better stewards of the cultural diversity that the Holy Spirit has introduced into the global church over the last two centuries.

A New Zealand Contextual Church Model that Fosters Community and Discipleship
Get PDFThe goal of this project was to discover a church model that helps de-churched New Zealanders grow as followers of Jesus and in relationships with each other. The strategy followed was to include the de-churched in the identification of activities that they believed would help their formation. The context of this study was the Kiwi Church faith community, a new church congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand. The study led to the definition of church for this community as “Doing life with Jesus, and each other.”
Six participants were interviewed at the beginning of the project to gain an understanding of their current level of spirituality, and identify possible activities to experiment with. The activities, along with other spiritual exercises identified by the author, were experimented with over a period of eighteen months, and then the participants interviewed again.
The learning from this process is in three main areas: activities, leadership and environment. It was found that the predominant leadership model of the PCANZ was not suitable to lead this type of faith community, therefore a new model, “player-coach” proposed. The church environment required has a number of characteristics: equalitarian, freedom to doubt and question, no expectation to serve, and a high level of hospitality and listening. The most significant aspect being the high value placed on an invitation to authentic relationships. It was found that the church environment was impacted negatively when activity was prioritized over relationship. The Church of England’s four- directional model describing a healthy church was examined, and two additional relationships proposed, one with the land and environment, and one with oneself.
Church expression can be simple, and it often becomes more complicated than necessary. The key ingredient missing in the ecclesiastical landscape of New Zealand is imagination. Church can, and should be expressed in many different ways responding to the context each community is located
The Making of Men: Nurturing Boys at Kirk in the Hills to Become Men in Christ
Get PDFLiving into an identity in Christ and serving others is in many ways counter to upper-class American culture. Raising boys in an affluent area to be Christ-like men presents a challenge. As adolescent boys seek their own identities in Christ, the men in these boys’ lives must coach them by exemplifying their own identities in Christ and call to be true men of God—to be servants of God with Christ.
While the American Mainline Church dwindles, the traditional PC(USA) church of Kirk in the Hills—located in an affluent suburb of Detroit, Michigan—is reversing trends. A recent self-study revealed that this is a large Millennial congregation and offers the ideal setting to train men in Christ to coach boys to be Christian men.
This doctoral project begins to respond to the challenges of raising boys living amidst affluence to have identities in Christ. The response rests in the men of Kirk in the Hills and its faith community. They must be positive mentors and role models who help guide boys to be men of God. However, if the men are going to take on this role, they will need to be fed and spiritually disciplined. They will have to be taught to serve as Jesus served and deeply learn that being a true man in Christ means being a servant to all.
This three-part discussion explores Kirk in the Hills as well as its community context. It biblically defines the process and practice of teaching men of the local church to be the servants of God that Christ calls them to be. Through a focused ministry strategy, the hope is that their “manly” example will inspire the younger generations of boys to serve God and others

Quiet as Church Mice: Offering Welcome through Contemplative Worship
Get PDFIn a busy suburban church, those with introverted personalities may easily be marginalized or overlooked. This project set out to create a new kind of welcome for both introverts and extroverts through a weekly contemplative worship service. Celebrating the Lord’s Supper amid stillness and quiet presented a stark contrast to the prevailing culture of the congregation, which is usually sociable and boisterous. It recognized the increasing diversity of the community and invited leaders and participants to practice hospitality more deeply. It also taught a new kind of Christian practice that is essential for a congregation engaged in local mission.
This doctoral project includes the short history of the congregation with its increasingly diverse context and explores the general definition, needs and character of introverts and extroverts. A theological and biblical argument is made for greater inclusion and for the use of contemplative spirituality as a way to welcome introverts more fully. A full liturgy for the Eucharist in a contemplative style is also included.
This project not only widened the welcome at Trafalgar Presbyterian Church; it also created a new rhythm of action and contemplation. Once introverts were heard and accommodated, their needs and preferences turned out to be a gift to extroverts as well. Contemplative spirituality, previously unexplored, has begun to nourish a tired and missional congregation
