Ubuntugogy As Instructional Design for Adult Leadership Development Within the Swaziland Leadership Academy
No full textIn this dissertation, I develop an instructional design strategy for emerging young adult leaders (EYAL) in the Swaziland Leadership Academy (SLA). The study was prompted by my desire to evaluate and improve the learning within the SLA. In Part I, I review literature related to adult education, the Swazi epistemological context, and instructional design, leading to a contextualized instructional design known as ubuntugogy. In Part II, I explain the use of a phenomenological case study, including archival research, census survey, semi-structured interviews, and focus group. These methods lead to data concerning the learning, transfer, and impact of the SLA in the lives of the students as well as unique descriptors of EYAL in the SLA. The data suggests learning needs for EYAL include spiritual formation, self-leadership, servant-oriented leadership, and leadership principles. Data shows delivery of these learning needs is most transformative in the context of experiential learning. In Part III, I integrate the learning needs with ubuntugogy as instructional design. An organizational change analysis and strategy is included in order to move the SLA learning into an ubuntugogic model. Although a contextually designed instructional strategy, ubuntugogy can be applied to similar contexts throughout Africa and around the world.

Responding to Korean pastors’ desires to study in their “heart language,” Dr. Kim led Fuller in generating the Korean professional degree in theology in 1995. Besides teaching New Testament in the masters’ and Ph.D. programs, Dr. Kim also served as Associate Dean for the Korean DMin Program until 2012.

The Role of Prayer in Mission Formation: From Africa to Australia
No full textPioneers of Australia is a vibrant and dynamic mission organisation, entrusted with the privilege of sending mature disciples to share the good news of Jesus Christ among the nations. The purpose of this dissertation is to enable Pioneers of Australia applicants and appointees to proactively grow in the specific area of prayer, ensuring that prayer lies at the very core of their ongoing formation for global mission.
This research investigates two major sources of prayer. Firstly, prayer as seen in the life of Jesus and the early church in Acts – voices from Scripture. And secondly, prayer as found in the lives of Pioneers-Africa, another sending entity within Pioneers – voices from Africa. The findings are then applied to the context of Pioneers of Australia.
The research utilizes is a combination of literature survey of Scripture (voices from Scripture) and ethnographic methodology (voices from Africa). The latter includes the mutually enhancing methods of Narrative Interview and Participant Observation. After identifying the points of intersect between the material, I then establish Biblically-based principles of prayer for application to Pioneers of Australia. I have limited this to five initial principles, which are then creatively expanded through a booklet entitled Shaped by Prayer, found in Appendix E. All of this is to facilitate a greater understanding of and commitment to the role of prayer as a core aspect of the life and ministry of our cross-cultural global mission workers, leading to greater Kingdom impact.

Adolescent Religious Coping, Adolescent Religious Support, and Emotional Functioning: A Prospective Analysis
No full textThe potential unique main effects of, and interactions between, religious coping strategies and received religious support were examined regarding adolescent emotional functioning both cross-sectionally and prospectively. Religious support was generally associated with better emotional functioning, as predicted, with the exception that support from religious leaders was unexpectedly linked prospectively with less life satisfaction. Religious coping was also significantly related to emotional functioning at every level of analysis. As hypothesized, positive God-focused coping and constructive distraction were related to adaptive functioning, but these relatively weak effects were not maintained in more conservative analyses. Unexpectedly, seeking religious support was uniquely linked with more depressive symptoms cross-sectionally at Time 2 and prospectively. Also contrary to hypotheses, interactions between religious coping and religious support were generally nonsignificant with only two interpretable exceptions. Collectively, findings suggested that religious support and religious coping are both relevant to religious adolescents’ emotional functioning, but that these constructs might more likely function additively and/or via mediation versus interaction. Implications for the results and directions for future research are discussed

No full textLa idea central de este proyecto es impulsar a la Iglesia del Nazareno de South Mountain, en Phoenix, Arizona, a desarrollar una visión misional hacia la comunidad. Animaremos a diez hermanos voluntarios a que se involucren en un programa después de escuela para niños, con el propósito de llevar a la práctica esta visión. El escrito, consta de tres partes centrales, más la conclusión, bibliografía y apéndices.
La primera parte, presenta el contexto demográfico, socio-económico y religioso de la comunidad. Una encuesta sobre las necesidades académicas de los niños, y describe una breve historia y datos de la Iglesia de South Mountain. La segunda parte, desarrolla el aspecto bíblico y teológico del proyecto, así como la capacitación del liderazgo. Estudiaremos un párrafo de las Escrituras en relación con la misión, y presentaremos un plan para movilizar al liderazgo hacia una visión y acción misional.
La tercera parte muestra la organización y puesta en marcha del programa “Después de escuela”. Con el equipo de voluntarios organizaremos una junta para planificar los aspectos que hacen al programa. Concluimos con un recuento de las experiencias obtenidas en este proyecto y explicaremos porque es necesario desarrollar una visión y actividades misionales en nuestras congregaciones
Implementing Spiritual Vitality in the Men of San Marcos Community Church: Holy Spirit and Spiritual Practices
Get PDFThe purpose of the project is to develop a thirty-day spiritual formation program for the men of San Marcos Community Church in Central Texas. The program begins with an overnight retreat followed by four weekly meetings and daily spiritual practices. The goal is to give the men spiritual tools for accessing a deeper relationship with God.
This paper is presented in three parts. Part One examines the ministry context of San Marcos Community Church. It describes the cultural and demographic composition of both the town of San Marcos and the church. An overview of the need for this project is provided as well.
Part Two establishes the theological and biblical foundations relevant to the development of spiritual formation. The person and work of the Holy Spirit are foundational and are investigated through the theological writings of several authors. A description of how the Spirit operates through the disciplines is discussed, and theological reflection regarding divine encounter is explored as a theological base.
Part Three discusses the thirty-day program, designed to increase spiritual vitality among the men at the church. During this time the men will experience the practices of Lectio Divina, Journaling, the Prayer of Examen, and small group accountability. The men will be required to engage these practices during the program with the hope that they will adjust their lives and incorporate them permanently
