    No full text
This qualitative study was planned to identify the curiosity enhancing strategies (CES) and explore the challenges faced by teachers during the use of strategies at primary school students in the subject of science. Curiosity is the desire to acquire new knowledge through exploration in order to grow and expand understanding. Curiosity refers to the tendency of children to ask, investigate, and find out the new knowledge obtained from their environment. The researchers did not find a study in the literature that specifically examined identification of curiosity related strategies used by teachers in Pakistan. This research study was conducted to identify the curiosity related strategies used by the public sector school teachers in teaching Science to students enrolled in primary classes in Lahore. Purposive sampling technique was used for selection of the participants of the study. Data was collected from teachers and students of primary school (5th grade) level in science subject. Data from teachers was collected personally and on telephone. Data from students was collected through interviews by visiting the respective schools and after taking consent of the school principal. Two semi structured interview protocols were developed for taking responses at primary school level teachers and students. Data was analyzed by using thematic analysis technique. Findings of the study reflected that primary school teachers of the study were using different strategies for enhancing curiosity in students in the subject of Science. During the use of these strategies public sector primary school teachers faced many challenges like lack of resources, large strength of students in a classroom, lack of students attention, lack of parents cooperation. This study recommended that teachers and parents may use these strategies for enhancing curiosity in students

    No full text
Purpose: Aim of the study is to evaluate climate selected sixty-six countries of the world. Since climate plays a vital role in economic growth of any country and there is dearth of climate models comparing country-wise position to predict as how climate of country is relatively better than others and how it may change in the future and how will it affect on businesses. Methodology: It follows quantitative research philosophy based on secondary data obtained from World Development Indicators (WDI). Grey relational analysis is used method of analysis. A classification is made under a predetermined scheme of ensigns like: much better, better, somewhat better, fair, poor, somewhat worse and worse. Findings: Results of the study show that Arabian Countries (AC), mostly member countries of European Union (EE), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) have much better and conducive climate, whereas, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries have worse and unfavorable climate for business. Implications: It is an original and valuable study that uses country level data from a reliable source. Results of the study are useful for international business community, political governments, society at large and researchers

Tax avoidance are the strategies that firms use to avoid their tax payments and rise their after-tax income. Recently, tax avoidance increase consideration in the modern research literature. In developing countries like Pakistan, taxes are a most important element to support the country’s budget and revenues. Therefore, this study tries to find the impact of corporate diversification on tax avoidance of listed firms in Pakistan stock exchange. For sample selection study use the 22 different sectors and select 129 companies based on availability of data. The time horizon of this study is 13 years started from 2006 to 2018 on annual basis. Study uses GAAPETR (tax expense / pre-tax income) to measure the tax avoidance besides entropy-index use for corporate diversification. To identify the long-term relationship between corporate diversification and tax avoidance study apply Johnson and Julius (1990) multivariate co-integration analysis. The results of Johnson and Julius (1990) approach shows that co-integration exist between corporate diversification and tax avoidance. Besides study use firm characteristics as control variables like leverage, firm profitability, ratio of capital expenditure and market to book ratio.  Finally, study has policy implication for government, policy makers, regularity bodies, tax authority’s, investors and other stakeholders in Pakistan

Disintegrated Market Orientation and Firm Performance: Moderating Effect of Entrepreneurial Orientation

    No full text
The interplay between strategic orientations has received limited attention in manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs).The existing studies have repeatedly called for investigating the impacts of multiple strategic orientations on organizational performance. Moreover, prior research called for disintegrating the strategic orientation and assessing their effects on organizational performance. Thus, this study is the first of its nature – disintegrating the market orientation (MO) construct and using data from 213 SMEs of Pakistan, collected through survey method, which reports on how the deployment of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) as moderator produces synergistic effect and strengthens the MO dimensions –organizational performance links. The results indicate that the MO dimensions are positively and significantly related to organizational performance. Moreover, EO significantly and positively moderates the MO dimensions and organizational performance relationships. The study provides avenues for future research

Forecasting Inflation Applying ARIMA Model with GARCH Innovation: The Case of Pakistan

    No full text
Purpose: The research aims to build a suitable model for the conditional mean and conditional variance for forecasting the rate of inflation in Pakistan by summarizing the properties of the series and characterizing its salient features. Design/Methodology/Approach: For this purpose, Pakistan’s Inflation Rate is based upon the Consumer Price Index (CPI), ranging from January 1962 to December 2019 has been analyzed. Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test that was used for testing the stationarity of the series. The ARIMA modeling technique is a conditional mean and GARCH model for conditional variance. Models are selected on AIC and BIC model selection criteria. The estimating and forecasting ability of three ARIMA models with the GARCH (2,2) model has been compared to capture the possible nonlinearity present in the data. To depict the possible asymmetric effect in the conditional variance, two asymmetric GARCH models, EGARCH and TGARCH models have been applied. Findings: Based on statistical loss functions, GARCH (2,2) model is the best variance model for this series. The empirical results reveal that the performance of model-2 is best for all the three variance models. However, the GARCH model is the best as the variance model for this series. This shows that the asymmetric effect invariance is not so important for the rate of inflation in Pakistan.  Implications/Originality/Value: The current study was based on the least considered variables and the pioneer in testing the complex relationship through the ARIMA model with GARCH innovation

Purpose: This research focuses on how the currently occurring conflicts in Pakistan are leading to violent acts which in turn affect the society and the economy of the country. Conflicts and violence are becoming a colossal menace for developing countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan. Design/Methodology/Approach: Moreover, the research has examined, using the tools of comparative analysis, how conflicts and violence affect the economy and society.Findings: The results suggest that conflicts and violence have rendered serious Socio-economic consequences. Conflicts and violence destroy assets, institutions and brutely disturb the social setup of the country by disturbing the socio-economic progress of the nation. Pakistan has been a victim of conflicts and violence since the day of its independence. Whether it is the migration of refugees in 1947, Pak Indo war of 1965, East Pakistan separation in 1971, post 9/11 war on terrorism, Lal Masjid attack in 2008, PNS Mehran terrorist attack in 2011, or the Peshawar Army Public School attack in 2015, Pakistan has suffered great losses both socially and economically.  Implications/Originality/Value: The study has contributed towards better understanding of how conflice and violence has affected the socio-economic structure of Pakistan. Acid attacks, violence against women, child abuse, ethnic polarization, Islamic sectarianism, intolerance, and honor killings are a few of the many heinous acts that have not only affected each member of the society in Pakistan but have also proven to be a threat to each sector of its economy

    No full text
Purpose: Major aim of the study was to investigate the development of mathematical thinking and processing in Pakistani sample. Particular focus of the study was to figure out whether Pakistani people across various age groups process numbers with similar sophistication as their western counter parts from developed countries. Mathematics plays huge role in the development of the society and research evidence in this context from Pakistan is scarce. Design/Methodology/Approach: 261 participants ranging from 5 to 72 years of age participated in the study. Panamath task being the robust measure of ANS acuity was administered. Findings: Results revealed that numerical acuity got precise with an increase in age. However, most sophisticated acuity has been shown around age 46-50 as compared to the western population showing its peak around 30 years of age. Delay in developing most sophisticated approximate number system acuity across the groups as compared to the trend reported in the western population raises many questions in terms of cultural variations and practices contributing to the development of number sense. Implications/Originality/Value: We need to improve our mathematical learning and teaching practices so that it could be helpful in economic growth in turn by better mathematical performance across various age groups. On a general note, economical practices, math related curriculum policies, lack in math related games, math practices at home and at educational institutions with varying level of curriculum and pedagogical practices might be a contributor for this trend. The study has important implications for understanding the development of number sense cross-culturally keeping in view the evidence from various cultures.                                                           &nbsp
