The Downfall of the Rehabilitative Ideal and the Establishing of a New Political Legitimacy in Swedish Crime Policy: 1965 to 1989
The downfall of the rehabilitative ideal is considered a decisive episode if we want to understand the changes that have transpired in crime policy the last three to four decades. In Sweden, the downfall followed abruptly on the final establishing of individual prevention as theoretical bases for crime policy by the enactment of a new penal code in 1965. This paper follows the trajectory of the downfall in Sweden by doing a genealogy thereof. The purpose is to contribute to a more empirically developed understanding of the course of Swedish crime policy during the formative years of the 1970s to the early 1990s. Firstly, the paper addresses the topic by examining the scholarly critique that paved the way for the downfall of the rehabilitative ideal. Secondly, the paper analyses the political handling of the downfall and the consequence this had for policy. Methodological this is done by way of genealogy exploring the historical pedigree of present-day crime policy in Sweden, not as a linear development, but as plural and sometimes contradictory pasts. Theoretical the paper aims to analyze the trajectory by way of a governmentality perspective, i.e. it focuses on crime policy as a means of governing life and the population, thus exploring the different forms governing takes
Blant annet diskuteres hva profesjonalitet i veiledningsforhold i skolen innebærer.
Tokyo Pengyou
This ethnographic film follows a young Chinese musician\u27s struggles in Japan, demonstrating how emergent socialities and convivialities form through playful scenarios and the interplay of digital and analogue worlds. It explores how desire, disappointment and creativity shape young Chinese people\u27s social bonds while living abroad, revealing the complicated nature of friendship in migration contexts. Based on long-term fieldwork in Tokyo\u27s unofficial Chinatown, Ikebukuro, the film also serves as a reflection on the role of friendship in anthropological research
Marked themes in English and Norwegian academic texts in the field of didactics
This study investigates the use of marked themes in the field of didactics. The material comprises research articles written in L1 English and Norwegian, and L2 English. The aim is to shed light on contrastive differences between Norwegian and English that may be used to inform novice writers about central textual features of academic texts within the field of didactics, and about potential transfer-related features that might give their texts a “foreign accent”. The results show that there are contrastive differences in the realization of and meanings expressed by marked themes, but that these differences cause few problems for L2 writers. The study further supports findings from previous research that show the importance of text type and academic discipline for thematic structure
Humanistic Music Therapy in the Child Welfare: Reflections on the Label "Humanistic Music therapy" and Its Correlation with the Visions of the Leaders of a New Child Welfare Institution for Adolescents
Do we all have a common understanding of what humanistic music therapy is? The point of departure in this paper is the development of a new Norwegian residential care unit for adolescents in child welfare services. Those responsible for this unit have included a music therapist, because they want to base the enterprise and its activities upon the values they associate with music therapy. This paper asks: What is “humanistic music therapy” and how might its perspectives correlate with the visions and ideas of the leaders of a child welfare institution? A literature review will assess the critical understanding of the concept of humanistic music therapy, in order to understand its unbiased and foundational values. Semi-structured interviews with the unit’s initiators will describe their visions and hopes for the development of the care unit with regard to humanistic music therapy. By correlating the findings from the literature review and the interviews, the paper describes aspects that might contribute to a common ground of understanding for the music therapist and the workers in the unit, which in turn might contribute to personal growth and health promotion among the adolescents and their community
Intoxication and Self-Induced Criminal Incapacity in Norwegian Law
This article provides an explanation and analysis of the regulation of criminal incapacity and intoxication in Norwegian criminal law. The current rule on this matter is found in section 20 of the Norwegian Penal Code. This rule is strict and does not require that the defendant was culpable in creating his or her incapacity (or for committing the crime in this condition). The authors explain how this rule has been subject to critique, in particular because it compromises the principle of guilt. On this background, they offer a broader picture of Norwegian criminal law, by examining the alternative solutions found in the Penal Code of 1902 and in the two recent law proposals NOU 2014:10 and Prop. 154 L (2016-2017) – which provide for a shift in focus to self-induced criminal incapacity. The authors argue that the guilt principle must be the guiding perspective for the construction of rules on intoxication and self-induced criminal incapacity. On this basis, they argue that the current rule should be abolished, and that the proposal in NOU 2014:10 is the most adequate alternative, although it is also coupled with some problems. They conclude that the operationalisation of the guilt principle requires a larger engagement in the philosophical debate on the matter than what has so far been the case in Norwegian criminal law
Wheresoever the Body Is: Image, Matter, and Corporeality on Shakespeare\u27s Stage
What does the visual culture of early modern England, and the ways in which that culture articulated specific notions of corporeality, tell us about the actor’s body on Shakespeare’s stage? This article locates one answer to that question in the popular emblem books and the somewhat more rarefied cosmographical treatises of the day. Digging in these sources reveals an understanding of the body that is grounded first and foremost in corporeality – the body, before it was anything else, was matter. As such, I argue that the actor’s body on the early modern stage served as an instance of irrefutable and irreducible materiality, ‘lending’ its materiality to the abstractions and absences that Shakespeare’s theatre so readily ‘bodied forth.’However, as a wealth of scholarship on the body has suggested over the past few decades, things are not this simple. The body appears in these arenas as a very specific kind of matter, and matter itself is shown to have a complex relationship to ‘form’, or the immaterial realities of life. I argue here that the nature of the body-as-matter, and indeed of matter itself, is fruitfully understood in terms of two related early modern concepts: prima materia, and man as microcosm. These ideas were most in circulation in the distinct but kindred fields of alchemy and cosmography, and their visual manifestations offer a perspective on the theatrical body that does not reduce the body to simplematter, but still acknowledges its profound materiality, and the effect that the body-as-matter has on stage-work as a whole
Sentence-initial indefinite subjects in English and Norwegian
The present study uses the English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus to investigate the frequency and use of indefinite noun phrases as subjects in English and Norwegian. Since subjects in both languages tend to appear clause-initially, indefinite subjects represent a deviation from the information principle. The clearest difference between the languages is the greater frequency of indefinite subject NPs in English. The lexicogrammatical features of the indefinite subjects and their immediate contexts are relatively similar in both languages. The indefinite subjects most commonly occur with intransitive verb phrases, and often in clauses with presentative or generic meaning. Translation correspondences of indefinite subjects show that the subject NP is retained in congruent form in the majority of cases, but more changes are made in translations from English into Norwegian than the other way round. This is taken to support the findings of the contrastive analysis and furthermore indicates that the light subject constraint is applied more strictly in Norwegian than in English
English supplementive ing-clauses and their German and Swedish correspondences
This paper investigates English supplementive ing-clauses (e.g., Hitler exploded, demanding examples.) in German and Swedish contrast. The material consists of popular non-fiction originals and their translations from the Linnaeus University English-German-Swedish corpus (LEGS) (version 0.1). The results show that coordination is the most frequent correspondence of supplementive ing-clauses in German and Swedish translations and originals. Like the supplementive ing-clause, a coordination is a compressed and semantically indeterminate structure. The other major correspondences include subordination, main clause and prepositional phrase. German translators more often use main clauses than Swedish translators, which seems to be related to an increasing German tendency for parataxis rather than hypotaxis. A number of German and Swedish instances involve different kinds of explicitation, including conjunctions and German pronominal adverbs
