Chilling Effect as a European Court of Human Rights’ Concept in Media Law Cases
In few of the many cases where the European Court of Human Rights has found a violation of Article 10, the Court has simultaneously stated that a specific restriction or sanction has an actual or a potential chilling effect for press freedom. The Article examines by way of the Court’s case law the notion of ‘chilling effect’. It is concluded that ‘chilling effect’ is a strong notion reserved for cases where something genuine is at stake. The notion points beyond the case at hand and has a negative impact on the applicant’s future task or – in its most severe form – a negative impact on the press as such to the outmost detriment of the public debate, the control of the establishment, and, thereby, to the impairment of society as a whole
The purpose of this article is to gain insight into student-perceptions of supervision of practical training in kindergarten teacher-education. Today there is little Nordic research from the student-perspective on the quality of supervision of practical training in kindergartens. In this study students in their first, second, and third years of study, divided into four focus-groups, exchanged experiences and views on what they perceive as good and bad practical supervision. Students\u27 perceptions of quality include; follow-up from the practical-training supervisor, supervision adapted to their needs, good feedback, being challenged by the supervisor, open dialogue and mutual learning, supervision along with others but also alone, good attitudes of the mentor, and good interaction between the practical placement and campus. The findings are discussed in relation to international research and the discourse between central Nordic schools of supervision. Findings are also seen in light of the concept of quality in higher education
Anti-Rhetorical Strategies in Early Modern Images of Comic Actors: Harlequin’s Iconography and its Surviving Medieval Features
The Compositions de Rhétorique by Tristano Martinelli were published in 1600 as a present to Maria de’ Medici for her marriage. The book is composed by blank pages interposed by images and the frontispice shows the famous actor as an almost hellish figure, bearing a pannier full of little Harlequins. A similar iconography pattern is to be seen in theRecueil Fossard, though as part of a dramatic context, and could ultimately derive from the iconography of Hellequin, as it is shown in a miniature of the Roman the Fauvel, where the hellish figure leads a cart with dead unchristened children. Discussing the hellish origin of Harlequin, most of scholars have neglected the evidence that some of his attributes are rooted in the sinful world of medieval entertainment. The pannier full of little kids or apes, for instance, recurs in medieval iconography of jesters, and since the XIVth century it begins to occur also in the depictions of devils, who assume some comical connotations. Exploring the context of medieval miniatures in relation to later iconography of actors, the article aims at rediscussing the vexed question of the hellish origin of Harlequin, providing some examples of a puzzling intertwining of elements and patterns
Political Shakespeare and the Blessing of Art
This text attempts to detail the functions and effects of some of Shakespeare\u27s aesthetic strategies, and to determine their relationship to ideology. While this is critical territory that cultural materialists and new historicists have extensively mapped, the current text avoids the preferred methods of enquiry that these lines take. Rather than giving focus to the containment strategies of a dominant ideology, my investigation proceeds via a close reading of certain elements from Act 5 of Shakespeare\u27s A Midsummer Night\u27s Dream. I attempt to demonstrate that meaning in the play is determined and encompassed within the self-reflective and dissimulating structures of Shakespeare\u27s art. I suggest that such an aesthetic premise offers a set of conditions that allows the play to operate in a manner which distinguishes it from its immediate cultural circumstances. This also means that when the ideological world beyond the stage is given re-presentation within the performance\u27s illusory structures, it necessarily undergoes something like a disfiguration. I end by briefly remarking how even if the aesthetic structures of Shakespeare\u27s plays realise themselves as distinct from, and as disfiguring of, ideology, they may still nonetheless be subject to it
Exploring cross-linguistic congruence: The case of two stance frames in English and Norwegian
This paper explores the degree of congruence between two closely related languages – English and Norwegian – in a case study of the two stance frames it BE * that and det VÆRE * at. It is first established that the open slot in the frames is most typically occupied by an adjective, thus steering this investigation towards a more detailed comparison of it BE ADJ that and det VÆRE ADJ at. The adjective determines the evaluative orientation of the frames, and, following Lemke (1998), the present study operates with seven categories to establish the attitudes and evaluations present in the frames. The study, which draws on material from a bidirectional translation corpus – the English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus+, reveals that the degree of congruence between the frames to some extent seems to depend on the attitude/evaluation expressed. Furthermore, the study reveals that there is 45% non-congruence between the languages. The translational correspondence network of the English and Norwegian patterns is broad, showing that there are a number of linguistic resources in the two languages that can be used to express attitudinal/evaluative stance. It is concluded that, while English and Norwegian are shown to have similar means of expressing attitudinal meanings with the frames, the two languages have their preferred ways of doing so both in terms of individual adjectives and attitudinal/evaluative class
