Co-creating libraries? Who should be drawing the map of the library landscape?

    No full text
KEYNOTE SPEECH. Co-creation is receiving increasing interest as a way to involve users in the design and development of goods  and services in many areas of life, including libraries. The concept of co-creation challenges established roles  and relationships between “producers” and “consumers” of services by suggesting that neither the  producers nor the consumers are able to create appropriate services alone, rather services should be co- created, i.e. created together. Thus, while co-creation as a term is new, the basic idea is not. It draws on  normative ideals with an impressive intellectual heritage, such as democratic citizenship and civil society.  In his talk, Christian will sum up on what we know about co-creation and discuss its relevance for the library landscape. The discussion centers around the question: Who should be drawing the map of the library landscape?&nbsp

    Get PDF

To Remain or Not to Remain Silent: The Evolution of The Privilege against Self-incrimination Ten Years After Marttinen v. Finland

    Get PDF
According to the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Marttinen v. Finland, a debtor has the right to remain silent in a debt enforcement enquiry given that the following conditions are met: first, that the inquiry is held concurrently with a criminal procedure; and second, that the same questions of evidence are investigated in both of the concurrent proceedings. Under these circumstances, the debtor enjoys the privilege against self-incrimination in the enforcement enquiry. The scope of this article is to examine whether the debtor has not only the right to remain silent, but also the right to give false statements. The assessment of this problem is built on the moral grounds of the privilege itself, but also on the law reforms and changes in case law after the judgment in the Marttinen case. As a conclusion of this article, the problem of false statements should not be evaluated by equating silence with false statements, but by considering two basic questions. First, would the right to remain silent suffice to protect the privilege against self-incrimination; and second, whether the motives for providing false statements express the aim to achieve something else than protection against inappropriate use of coercive power

Increasing Salience of Crime Control in Finnish Parliamentary Data from the 1970s to the 2000s

    Get PDF
In Finland, a post-war expansion of the welfare state was associated with a decline in the use of imprisonment. The 1990s marked the beginning of a more ambivalent era in Finnish criminal justice. How does this turning point appear in the public discourse on crime by political decision-makers? All parliamentary questions and members’ initiatives from 1975 to 2010 were examined with a keyword-based quantitative search, and further content analysis was conducted on data made up of 1589 written parliamentary questions about crime control from 1970 to 2010. The relative prevalence of criminal policy issues rose significantly in the early 1990s. During the same period, the political initiative moved towards the right and the views of the left seemed to move closer to the right concurrently. Although stances became tougher, expressions of leniency were in the minority before the 1990s too, which stresses the significance of the general level of political attention itself. Developments regarding specific types of crime are discussed. Keywords: Criminal justice, penal policy, legal history, parliamentary democracy, political parties, Finland

Criminal Responsibility and Challenges in the Criminal Justice System for People with Intellectual Disability in Norway

    Get PDF
The purpose of this article is to present and discuss Norwegian legislation concerning intellectual disability and criminal responsibility. Current legislation has an internationally unique feature, in that the rules governing criminal responsibility are based on what is known as the medical principle. This implies that criminal responsibility is determined by the defendant’s mental health status at the time of the crime. Norwegian criminal law does not require any causal or correlational relationship between the mental condition and the crime, as do most other jurisdictions. A brief description of historical perspectives and the Norwegian criminal justice system with regard to offenders with intellectual disabilities is also included

A Single-Case, Mixed Methods Study Exploring the Role of Music Listening in Vibroacoustic Treatment

    No full text
Übersetzung: Josephine GeipelChronic pain is a widespread issue accompanied commonly by depression and anxiety. Chronic pain has been shown to alter brain processing within the emotional and reward circuits, pointing towards a possible link between pain and comorbid mood disorders. Pain relief may be achieved by alleviating depressive and anxious symptoms. Relaxation is important for pain relief and eliciting relaxation through music listening is shown to relieve pain, depression, anxiety, and discomfort among others. In addition to auditory stimuli, Vibroacoustic treatment – the tactile application of low frequency sinusoidal sound vibration, plus music listening and therapeutic interaction – has been shown to be beneficial for relieving these symptoms. Although the combination of music listening and low frequencies has been previously explored, the role of the music listening within the vibroacoustic treatment context is unknown. A single-case, mixed method crossover study was conducted with a client suffering from chronic pain and comorbid mood disorders, four sessions with music listening, and four sessions without. Quantitative outcomes showed the client was more relaxed, less anxious, and had less pain after the music sessions. Qualitative findings showed that the client at first could not relax without the music listening because of her severe anxiety, but learned to use music as a distractor from her thoughts to relax, but also that silence was equally important for her; these hinged on her making the choice based on her needs, which had previously been difficult for her. An Exploration into the Perception of Music Interventions in Hospitals amongst Healthcare Professionals

    No full text
In order to raise awareness of how music can be used beneficially in hospitals, it is necessary to further understand the perception of music interventions amongst those working in this setting. A mixed methods approach was employed. Thirty-one healthcare professionals completed an online survey or interview asking how much live music existed in hospitals, their knowledge of music interventions, and expected effects. Attitudes towards introducing live music, where this would be appropriate, and willingness to learn more were also investigated. Four participants also took part in a follow up study. Live music was found to be uncommon, with no standardised internal system to enable it. Participants had little knowledge of research surrounding the use of music in medical settings. However, only 36% of this sample of healthcare professionals were willing to learn more. Observing a music session had a significant effect on the perception of the efficacy of music. Having observed a live session, healthcare professionals thought it would have a long term benefit to patients. There was interest in increasing the amount of live music on the ward and integrating a music therapist into the healthcare team. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of increasing awareness of music interventions amongst healthcare professionals, through observing music sessions and presenting evidence of the benefits of these during training programmes and Continued Professional Development (CPD) in order to create a more positive perception of music within hospitals
