This article examines the developement in the art of acting in Bergen, during the last half of the 19th century. I will present a historical view on the developement of a realistic acting style; from the bourgeois acting tradition, starting in the 1750s, and up to the beginning of the 1900s at ‘Den Nationale Scene’ in Bergen. I will use actress Octavia Sperati and her work as the orientation point for the analyses. I will examine local and external conditions for a developement in the art of acting, how some theatre managers and directors can be viewed as initiators to a change in the art of acting, and how the contemporary dramas of mainly Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson sets new conditions regarding how to act.

Group supervisors\u27 emotional competence is key when it comes to dealing with their own emotions and also understanding the emotions of their supervisees in a constructive way. The purpose of this study is to explore how group supervisors experience and apply their emotional competence when providing guidance to their group members. The data, which are based on in-depth interviews with three group supervisors, were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Three main themes were identified: (1) emotional responses, (2) empathic presence, and (3) facilitation of emotional competence among supervisees. The results highlight the importance of supervisors\u27 self-awareness and empathic presence, which form the basis for constructive communication with and between group members.

Perchance to Read: Developing an Augmented Reality Game to Increase Student Engagement with Hamlet

    Get PDF
Hamlet (and similar texts) can be difficult for students to follow initially. Often when students read, they may gloss over the text, missing key contexts. These problems lead to a lack of engagement in the literature classroom. The use of videos can help, but this often deters reading. This dilemma prompted the development of an Augmented Reality (AR) application to enhance Hamlet. By ‘zooming in’ on specific elements of Hamlet—Act I Scenes IV and V (the ghost scenes)— students explore and gain valuable information on the context behind these scenes. Students discover their perspective on a key question in the play; is the ghost real, or is it coinage from Hamlet’s brain? Students can arrive at a more concrete understanding of their own thoughts and take away a better grasp of both the context of the scene and the character of Hamlet through their active participation in the application.   Primarily, this article will highlight the dramatic effect student experience, both real and perceived, had on the development and execution of the application. The goal is to convey the pedagogical questions addressed when conceptualizing the application: the desired learning outcomes, the perceived student audience, and the need to connect game actions to the text of the play. It is one thing to speculate what students may want/need in such an environment from an instructor’s perspective. It’s another to analyze student and instructor feedback to help highlight critical areas more effectively. Students not only learn through their actions in the app; they help create the design of the application through their feedback. The article will detail the development of the application through this user input and the impact of praxis on its iteration

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Abstract  In 1968 École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and Mouton Éditeurs published the book Le métier de sociologue. Préalables épistemologiques by Pierre Bourdieu, Jean-Claude Chamboredon og Jean-Claude Passeron. In 1991, 23 years later Walter de Gruyter published, at the same time, a German and an slightly edited English version of the second edition of the French original. Especially the number of illustrative texts was reduced. Connected to the publishing Pierre Bourdieu was interviewed by Beate Krais from "Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung". She asked Bourdieu to explain the genesis of Le métier de sociologue, the positions within the sociological research milieu the book is related to, and what happened since then. In the interview especially two of Bourdieu\u27s demands for sociology to be a science are in focus, the construction of the scientific object and the double break

Make a Silence: Musical Dialogues in Asia

    No full text
The Hanoi New Music Festival 2018 was an historic event. It was the largest festival of exploratory forms of new music that has ever been held in Vietnam, and artists from countries across Southeast Asia and Japan came to Hanoi to participate. The film Make a Silence - Musical Dialogues in Asia showcases the diverse, multimedia performances that took place at the Festival, including sound art for theatre and video, underground music and free improvisation. Like the Festival itself, Make a Silence is a sensory feast of musical and visual exploration. Combining vivid artistic images, conversations with musicians and footage of concerts, the film meditates on transnational dialogue in the contemporary music scene in Asia. Artists featured in the film include Otomo Yoshihide (Japan), Trần Thị Kim Ngọc (Vietnam), Jiradej Setabundhu (Thailand), Red Slumber (Vietnam), Siew-Wai Kok (Malaysia), Otto Sidharta (Indonesia) and Yii Kah Hoe (Malaysia). The film is based on long-term ethnographic research in Vietnam by the director. It examines how transnational circuits of musical exchange in the new music scenes in Asia intersect with postcolonial politics, thereby challenging the often-presumed hegemony of Euro-American lineages of contemporary music

Learning how to learn: The role of music and other expressive arts in responding to Early Leaving from Education and Training (ELET) in the STALWARTS project

    No full text
This project report describes policy, practice and theory related to a cross-sectoral international project funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. STALWARTS– Sustaining Teachers and Learners with the Arts: Relational Health in European Schools–aimed to promote relational health in schools through engagement with the arts. The project was developed in five European countries: Estonia, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and the UK. The local partnerships between five universities and community-based schools are diverse in terms of their locations in the European region and the populations they serve, in terms of age, social status and learning conditions. In this article we focus on the link between ELET policies in each country and local context. We ask: How can identified ELET policy initiatives in the five partner countries relate to the achievements of the STALWARTS partner schools when working with the expressive arts? Some related theoretical background underpinning the practical aspects of the project brings this report to a conclusion
