Tensions between dissimilar voices: learning opportunities in mentoring
In this article, we examine how mentoring students’ learning processes in groups can contribute to further develop group mentoring as a form of mentoring. We received permission to examine students’ assignments from a group mentoring exercise. The analysis of 46 students’ texts provided three categories for further discussion; tools, turning points and roles. These categories are discussed in light of Bakhtin’s concepts of dialogue, heteroglossia, twofold voices and harmony (polyphony). The discussion shows that tensions, disagreement and different understandings of tools and roles in mentoring are often under-communicated. The variety within these voices are lesser expressed and these differences can, to a greater extent, be used as resources for learning. Furthermore, the discussion shows that meta-communication has potential for strengthening the learning process in group mentoring
Peer supervision – Chaos or Quest? A qualitative study of a high school student\u27s views on how peer supervision supports writing development
The purpose of this article is to gain insight into students’ perceptions of how supervision based on peers can contribute to the general supervision of written assignments in the Danish upper secondary school. The study contributes to new knowledge of peer-based supervision of written assignments in upper secondary schools, since , so far, this has not been investigated in a Scandinavian context. The article presents some of the findings of a large three-year longitudinal qualitative case-study, focusing on students’ narratives about supervision. Data was collected through interviews and participant observation. Bakhtin’s theories of dialogue and Goffman’s theories of facework are used to identify roles, voices and positions in peer-based supervision. The findings are discussed in the light of writing development, transition and inculturation. The study concludes that students find the experience of peer-based supervision supportive for their development as writers, as long as it is practiced and organized within a clear framework of close attention to writing processes and the specific student’s writing development.
"River Run" (Nancy Maker Brown Song) Revisioned and Reimagined
Video Description (on YouTube):
"River Run." Revisioned and Reimagined. 2021.
Words, music, arrangement by kei slaughter.
Originally written in 2019 while participating in the Acoustic Guitar Project - where artists are given one guitar, for one week, to write one song. This intimate performance is a reimagined and revisioned version, weaving deconstructed elements of the original work, with improvised vocalizations, body percussion, and flute loops, and live vocal and flute performance. "River Run" is dedicated to my maternal great great great great grandmother, Nancy Maker Brown.
For me, this (re)mix is an exploration and expression of Black aesthetics - imagining and conjuring new sound worlds through my queer, gender expansive Black body while engaging with ancestral memory. The stripped back elements of breath, tone, and voice, were intentionally used to ground me in my musical-cultural origins, back to a kind of roots music. Thus, embodying the West African concept of Sankofa, as I look back to the past, I also look ahead towards futurity, reflected through the use of live looping, layering, and circular storytelling.

This article is based on a lecture presented on the 25th of May 2018 at the conference Teatervitenskap – historiografi, teori og praksis in Bergen. This conference’s objective was to defend the section of Theatre Studies at the University of Bergen against cuts, and the lecture’s corresponding objective was to exemplify how theatre studies, besides consisting in research on performing arts, also is productively effective in creative processes of performing arts respectively in this field’s artistic research. In relation to the conference’s three focal points – historiography, theory, and practice – referred the lecture to three examples: Mette Ingvartsen’s performance 69 positions from 2014, Iggy Malmborg’s performance b o n e r, also from 2014, and the author’s own work as theatre scholar with background in Applied Theatre Studies, particularly his collaboration as dramaturge with Heine Avdal and Yukiko Shinozaki / fieldworks in their productions distant voices (2014), carry on (2015) and unannounced (2017). The article presents these examples in a slightly changed order and adds, as their description’s background, a discussion on, firstly, the arguments that were used to defend theatre studies in the conference’s context, and, secondly, the relation between research and artistic research in Norway and the debate about it.

Reminiscence-Focused Music Therapy to Promote Positive Mood and Engagement and Shared Interaction for People Living With Dementia: An Exploratory Study
Abstract
Abstract
Although there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that combining music therapy and reminiscence in a structured and complementary way may yield positive well-being outcomes for people with dementia, there is a gap in the literature combining both in equal measure. Furthermore, there are no known studies exploring the use of ‘associative items’ as part of the combined intervention and no known standardised protocol or method currently exists. This mixed methods study aims to explore whether combining music therapy and reminiscence with associative items for people with dementia may promote positive mood and engagement levels and shared interaction through (a) musical expression, (b) reminiscence and (c) verbal interaction. Five weekly reminiscence-focused music therapy (RFMT) sessions with associative items were conducted with a group of five people with dementia living in a residential care unit. Results from the Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) revealed that the RFMT intervention was highly effective in promoting positive mood and engagement levels and shared interaction. Participants exhibited considerable positive mood and engagement (+3) 51.6%, and high positive mood and engagement (+5) 38.2%, of the total time observed. The three most frequent behaviours across the five RFMT sessions included musical expression, which was observed 53.2% of the time, reminiscence, observed 23% of the time, and verbal interaction, observed 34% of the total time observed. Data from the music therapist’s reflective journal and session summaries revealed that the associative items prompted reality orientation, verbal interaction, and cognitive stimulation. The music elements were found to increase group cohesion, stimulate cognition, and act as an anchor, re-orientating group members intermittently. Implications of practice are considered, and future recommendations of practice are outlined
The 15 th April 2016 marked the 25-year anniversary since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) in Australia handed down its Final Report. The report signified a landmark in the relationships between Indigenous Australians and the post-colonial State and Federal governments. Established by the Hawke Labor Government in 1987, the Commission examined 99 Indigenous deaths. Most significant was the finding that the deaths were due to the combination of police and prisons failing their duty of care, and the high numbers of Indigenous people being arrested and incarcerated.
In the wake of the RCIADIC, cross-cultural sessions and cultural competency workshops have become ubiquitous for public servants, therapists, and legal and welfare employees, in attempts to bridge gaps in cultural knowledge between agents of the welfare state and Indigenous clients. Using Indigenous Knowledges theory, this chapter assesses how cultural misalignments between Indigenous clients and those who work with them in the name of therapies designed to improve Indigenous lives, dominate cross-cultural interactions. In so doing the questions are posed: how do good intentions become part of the discourses and practices of on-going colonialism for Indigenous Australians, and what can be done to change the balance of power in favour of therapies of relevance to Indigenous people?

Thinking Through Improvisation: How Arts-based Reflexivity Can Offer New Knowing About Music Therapists’ Experiences of Humour in Music Therapy
Abstract

Abstract
As part of a larger research study investigating humour in music therapy with persons with dementia, this article details how music therapists perceive, embody and experience humour in their practice. Three focus groups with music therapists ( N = 9) were organised and resulting data analysed through arts-based reflexive methods.
Building on Schenstead’s (2012) articulation of arts-based reflexivity, two distinct and overlapping forms of thinking through improvisation are highlighted; self-reflexivity and collaborative-reflexivity. Finlay’s (2011) phenomenological lifeworld-oriented questions are used to explicate dimensions of experiences of humour and frame broad thematic reflections. Particular correspondence between improvisation as a way of being and humour in music therapy are explored performatively through a group improvisation involving the first author.
The findings from this synthesis offer insight into how music therapists conceive of humour in their work as supportive of relational bonding, and also experience humour as distancing and defensive behaviour. Along with the perceived risks of humour in relational therapeutic work, an intricate balance between playfulness and professionalism surfaced as part of a music therapy identity. Improvisation, while seemingly taken for granted as a part of spontaneous humour, is also problematised through the perceived seriousness of learning how to improvise as a music therapist aligning with a psychodynamic approach. The consequences of these findings are discussed in relation to music therapy pedagogy and practice along with methodological implications of thinking through improvisation
Representation, Radicalism, and Music “After Sound”: A Composer’s Perspective on the Music of the Future in Music Therapy
This commentary presents an experimental-composer’s perspective on contemporary music therapy practice. I begin by offering my impressions of the field, gathered through interviews with practising music therapists, and an examination of the relevant literature. Then, the commentary first draws upon G. Douglas Barrett’s radical post-sonic theorisation of music to question the future of existing music in therapy, before instrumentalising avant-garde aesthetics to imagine what music may become in music therapy. This exploration will pay particular attention to the impacts of the dematerialisation of the art object in contemporary art, and the potential benefits a similar decentering of sound in contemporary music practices may provoke—specifically, the creation of theoretical frameworks that further suppress the authority of canonical forms, and increased contributions from previously-marginalised groups. Next, the commentary presents an analysis of two recent musical compositions that determinedly decenter sound, before examining the appropriateness of this aesthetic to therapeutic contexts. Finally, the commentary signposts a number of historical antecedents that illustrate music therapy’s potential for rigorous (and radical) selfexamination, and examines how these efforts may be expanded.
Abstract
