On Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) as Both Part of Music Therapy and as Separate From it

    No full text
Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) can be considered a specialism in which qualified music therapists may train, along with mental health practitioners from other professional backgrounds including psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. For this latter group of practitioners, identifying themselves as music therapists, or implying this when describing GIM as a music therapy method in advertising their services, is controversial. It may indeed even be unlawful in countries where music therapy training and practice are regulated by the state. The situation is a complex and inherently confusing one. This is because on the one hand GIM is an acknowledged international model of music therapy. On the other hand, as a specialism, GIM is distinct from music therapy in both training and practice, with GIM practitioners having various professional backgrounds. It is proposed that international collaboration and discussion are needed, with recommendations made to foster public confidence based on a clear understanding of who is and is not a qualified music therapist and member of the music therapy profession, and who is qualified to practice what safely and effectively. The article aims to illuminate the issues that may need to be taken into consideration in developing a consensus position

Library-faculty collaboration in the light of a business administration bachelor’s program: ‘The Scientific Wave’

    No full text
In contemporary digital society, information literacy is increasingly important and viewed as a necessary life skill for all ages, social groups, and professional sectors, hence also affecting higher education. Universities need to develop strategies and approaches to integrate these skills into course syllabi, assignments and assessments based on close library-faculty collaboration. However, librarians and faculty members in higher education traditionally often have separate agendas and limited collaboration. This paper illustrates the background and process of constructing a successful librarian-faculty partnership, as a shared framework entitled the ‘Scientific Wave’ throughout a bachelor’s program in business administration to enhance students’ critical thinking, research skills and information literacy in particular. A case study approach was applied, and data collection was conducted during 2014–2019. The outcomes of a shared framework and library-faculty collaboration are discussed from the perspectives of students, library, and faculty. Findings show that a shared framework based on close collaboration between librarians and faculty, strategic anchoring and visualization in curricula, syllabi, course objectives and assessments developed in line with the mission of the university have an impact on students’ information literacy skills during their education and after graduation. The Scientific Wave is a co-designed continuous framework based on the separate but complementary skills of librarians and faculty to provide students with tools for critical and creative thinking, research skills and lifelong learning in today’s digital society

Teaching information literacy in the humanities: Engaging students with primary sources and cultural heritage material

    No full text
Many university libraries hold large cultural heritage collections that are unknown to most students. The digitisation of these collections offers new ways of working with primary sources, and with it, an increased interest in archives and older collections, both in digital and physical form. This article discusses how archival material and other primary sources can be used in our information literacy classes, thus broadening the understanding of information literacy to include primary source literacy. I share two examples of how my colleagues and I have engaged students with primary sources and discuss the pedagogical challenges and opportunities. The article also addresses the disciplinary aspect of information literacy and what a humanities approach to teaching information literacy could incorporate. Drawing on own experiences and previous research, the article concludes that using primary sources in information literacy classes can enrich learning, engage students, and develop our teaching practices

Reforming the rape offence in Norwegian criminal law

    Get PDF
This article addresses the content, context and development of the Norwegian rape offence to frame and explain current reform discussions. The authors describe how the offence has gradually expanded over time by partial reforms, the last in 2000, leading up to the contemporary stand of law. The article shows that the role and priorities of the feminist movement has had consequences for how the rape offence has developed. There are currently debates on whether to further revise the rape offence. While debaters share the view that rape is a serious offence and that more should be done to combat it, they are divided in how they see the potential and role of law; some debaters emphasise law as a practical instrument, others instead focus more on its symbolic functions. The authors argue that both perspectives are legitimate and needed, and see this acknowledgment as key for moving debates forward

    Some Kind of Bond

Some Kind Of Bond is a film about a cemetery: a quiet and lonely place filled with life and memories. We observe the casual and the diligent visitors; we talk with them about their thoughts on death, loss and grief. Some of them decide to invite us to their homes and together we go on an emotional journey through different personal experiences: the loss of a child, a grandparent and a mother
