Relative magnitude of two Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) irruptions to southern Norway: comparison of citizen data and survey data

The Northern Hawk-Owl Surnia ulula occurs as an irruptive species to southern parts of Fennoscandia. Large numbers of individuals were recorded in the autumns of 2016 and 2020 but assessing the relative magnitude of irruptions is challenging. Systematic surveys allow direct comparisons but are time-consuming and will therefore be limited in time and space. Citizen data may provide large amounts of information for wide areas but may in particular suffer from spatial biases in the observation effort of birdwatchers. I compared the 2016 and 2020 irruptions of Northern Hawk-Owls to southern Norway, and found that citizen data indicated that numbers in 2016 were ca. 2–3 times larger than in 2020. However, the relative magnitude differed geographically, and the 2016 irruption was larger in western and southern counties, whereas the difference was smaller in eastern counties (in particular in Innlandet county). Systematic surveys in eastern regions (Oslo and Akershus) indicated that Northern Hawk-Owl densities were similar in the two irruption years. Overall, Northern Hawk-Owls were recorded at the same rate (approximately one owl per 16 km), and density was estimated to be 0.09–0.18 individuals/km2 in 2016 and 0.08–0.13 individuals/km2 in 2020. Thus, citizen data and survey data from the same geographical region concurred. However, due to the geographical variation in relative irruption size and spatial variation in observer density and biases in observation effort, the overall difference between the two years is difficult to assess. The 2016 irruption was likely larger than the 2020 irruption, but the difference was probably smaller than suggested by citizen data
Sweet Tassa: Music of the Indian Caribbean Diaspora
Sweet Tassa: Music of the Indian Caribbean Diaspora details the history, repertoire, and socio-political significance of tassa drumming in Trinidad & Tobago. The film profiles the life and work of noted tassa drummer Lenny Kumar and his family while also developing the notion of tassa performance practice as a metaphor for Indian Trinidadian cultural and national identity. In the process, the film traces tassa’s movement from India to the Caribbean, summarizes its transformation in diaspora, and speculates about its future.
Proceeding from analysis of tassa repertoire in Muslim and Hindu performance contexts, the film explores tassa’s physical and conceptual transformations in diaspora and the ongoing push to make tassa a co-national instrument alongside steel pan. In this regard, interviewees discuss the implication of tassa as “foreign”—despite more than 150 years of Indian presence in the Caribbean—and therefore unsuitable as a co-national instrument alongside steel pan. The film’s conclusion emphasizes tassa as an encapsulation of Indian identity: tassa’s performance contexts and performance practice signal India as a place of origin. Yet these very same aspects, by virtue of their persistence in diaspora, equally signal Trinidad and Tobago as home
Shakespeare\u27s Canon
This essay is concerned with how Shakespeare himself might have thought about a canon. What for him were the books that, to use A. S. Byatt’s phrase, “every writer had to know in order to know who they are”? One part of that question is easy: the books that every grammar school boy had beaten into him: Livy, Virgil, Ovid, Horace and so on. But how does a writer of his time, and, for that matter, of his calibre, negotiate their legacy?
This article is on Nursing Home residents who have different kinds of urine- and faeces incontinence, who cannot sit steady on ordinary toilet(chairs), - cannot speak, - cannot write, and who cannot walk. They deliver all their waists in incontinence pads. Although the residents cannot speak, it is obvious that they dislike the pads, and try to remove them. If they had been offered the possibility to deliver their urine and faces at fixed hours, most of their waists could have been left on a toilet(chair), but that was impossible because of the lack of nursing staff and the lack of appropriate equipment. The actual resident’s toilet practices are invisible violence, exercised through the everyday practices of social life in the feminine “lower part” of the Norwegian healthcare system.
The study is based on fieldwork in two Norwegian Nursing Homes. The analysis is carried out in the light of Bourdieu’s theories on the symbolic violence of masculine dominance
Moved to Connect
This article explores the relationship between self and society and how society is reflected in the self, whether we like it or not. It examines the natures of interactivity and participation in theatre and drama with and for children and young people through the power of story at a time when the crisis of culture makes it difficult to be present in our lives because we are so distracted. It calls for a unity of form and content that examines the political in the social and the personal by enacting human experience to create an event in us rather than an empty effect. It is through this kind of dramatic engagement that we can avoid distraction and participate authentically in our lives and be moved to connect with the world and each other and explore that relationship between self and society.

Engaging \u27Respect for Persons\u27 in Music Therapy
The goal of this article is to bring clarity to the notion of ‘respect for persons’ and to outline possible applications for the clinical music therapist. An argument is made that we can build understanding about respect for persons by raising a series of pertinent questions, beginning with, 1) How does a clinical Code of Ethics deal with respect for persons? 2) What do I mean when I call someone a ‘Person’? 3) What are key issues concerning personhood? 4) What do we mean when we ‘respect a person’? 5) What are some implications of ‘respect for persons’ in clinical music therapy? and importantly, 6) How do I understand respect from the client’s point of view
Hungarian Aphasia Choir Coping Online During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Aphasia choirs have been gaining more and more attention for the last decade. The operation of these are based on two pillars: the therapeutic effect of singing with aphasia and decreasing the social isolation of clients with a verbal language disorder. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the international community of these choirs, with special focus on the Hungarian Aphasia Choir, and show their challenges resulting from the restrictions imposed by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The Hungarian Aphasia Choir has had their therapeutic rehearsals online for seven months. The participants’ experiences and their coping methods regarding online and offline choir sessions were examined by an online survey of five questions completed by thirteen choir members living with aphasia as well as some of their caregivers. The responses clearly show the choir members’ general desire to carry on offline rehearsals, while the results also demonstrate that online rehearsals are effective in decreasing social isolation.
Preparing students for an evidence-based health service – a collaboration between the University Library and faculty
The Faculty of Health Sciences, OsloMet (Oslo Metropolitan University), first launched the joint course ‘Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice in Health Care’ in the fall semester 2020, with University Librarians as collaborative partners. The aim of the course is to ensure that OsloMet undergraduate students in the health sciences will be given the same platform for building their ability for evidence-based work. This best practice article is based on our presentation at the conference ‘Creating Knowledge 2021’. Here we shared some of our experiences of the collaboration with the faculty in the planning and implementation of this course, and the course design featuring flipped classroom structure and digital, student active teaching sessions. We will present examples of student course assignments, evaluation from students and faculty staff, and some course adjustments based on the feedback. This course gives both the library, the faculty and all our different health care students a common platform for teaching and learning evidence-based practice
