Exploring Student Experience Through Photovoice: A Transformative Approach to Studying School Climate and Culture at CHS

    Get PDF
Student data is an integral part of the decision-making process in classrooms, school buildings, and school districts. However, what is often missed within data collected is student voice. At Castle High School there is a current push to understand current school culture and make positive changes to enhance the student experience. Current forms of data collection methods conducted by the school include surveys and focus groups, but these methods exclude large parts of the student body. Photovoice, a form of qualitative participatory action research engages students in an emancipatory practice that allows them to photograph their experience in the school and present it to policymakers. To enact positive policy changes within CHS, photovoice is recommended to address climate and culture concerns within the school to enhance student experience. This study leverages student experience and teacher experience to develop an understanding of photovoices’ uses in the high school setting

Big Two and n-Card Poker Probabilities

    Get PDF
Between the poker hands of straight, flush, and full house, which hand is more common? In standard 5-card poker, the order from most common to least common is straight, flush, full house. The same order is true for 7-card poker such as Texas hold\u27em. However, is the same true for n-card poker for larger n? We study the probability of obtaining these various hands for n-card poker for various values of n≥5. In particular, we derive closed expressions for the probabilities of flush, straight and full house and show that the probability of a flush is less than a straight when n≤11, and is more than a straight when n\u3e11. Similarly, we show that the probability of a full house is less than a straight when n≤19, and is more than a straight when n\u3e19. This means that for games such as Big Two where the ordering of 13-card hands depends on the ordering in 5-card poker, the rank ordering does not follow the occurrence probability ordering, contrary to what intuition suggests

Analysis of Hawk Mountain Wind Speed to Raptor Count Trends from 1976 through 2021

    Get PDF
This analysis of summer 2023 is a sequel to the summer 2022 Analysis of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Observation Data from 1976 through 2021, also available as a web page through end of 2024 here. A presentation of that and subsequent analysis presented at Kutztown University in November 2022 and to Hawk Mountain researchers in January 2023 is available as PDF slides here and also on the web through 2024 here. This work was funded by a Kutztown University Research Grant for spring 2022 through summer 2023. Analytical use of these data proceeded through a subset of projects in three courses in the 2022-2023 academic year: CSC 458 - Data Mining & Predictive Analytics I in fall, CSC 523 - Scripting for Data Science in fall, and CSC 558 - Data Mining and Predictive Analytics II in spring. These courses include iterative exploration of data relationships that often result in new discoveries and consolidation of previous discoveries. The current document focuses on one significant data relationship, that of consistent decrease of wind speed measures at Hawk Mountain\u27s North Lookout, called regional stilling, to declining counts in certain raptor species from September through November in the later years of 1976 through 2021

Experiences of the supervisory alliance and self-compassion in counseling and psychotherapy students

    Get PDF
This qualitative research examined the relationship between supervisory working alliance, self-compassion and reflexive self-awareness with students enrolled in a graduate-level counseling or counseling and psychotherapy program (n = 48). A thematic analysis using a Critical Incident Questionnaire was performed. The themes identified in this study indicate that both supervision alliance and self-compassion seemingly contribute positively to student supervisee learning experiences and to the development of their reflexive self-awareness. Moreover, the perceived learning achieved, and the development of reflexive self-awareness, reciprocally strengthened the supervisory alliance. Furthermore, the degree of supervisees’ self-compassion as well as their perceived supervisory alliances had an impact on supervisees’ experiences of the supervision process

Actionable Advocacy: Application of the Socially Just and Culturally Responsive Counseling Leadership Model

    Get PDF
The socially just and culturally responsive counseling leadership model (SJCRCLM) provides a framework by which counselor leadership may move from performative to authentic allyship to prevent and buffer against racial trauma. The author describes how the SJCRCLM leadership causal conditions promote actionable advocacy within the counseling academic community. They offer strategies within the pillars of service, teaching, research, supervision, and counseling practice. The author asserts actionable advocacy will positively impact Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) counselor educator and student wellness and contribute to their recruitment and retention

Attitudes of Counselors Toward Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals

    Get PDF
Counselors are experts in handling mental health issues, however many mental health issues are reported to primary care providers. Collaboration between counselors and healthcare providers is increasing yet little is known about counselors’ attitudes toward this challenging practice. In this study 165 counselors completed surveys related to their attitudes and social anxiety levels toward interacting with healthcare professionals. Counselors in this study reported having slightly negative attitudes toward healthcare professionals. There was no significant relationship between attitudes and social anxiety. Social anxiety was inversely related to frequency of collaboration, however, only a few counselors reported social anxiety. More importantly, most counselors in this study reported collaborating to benefit clients which is promising considering the growing mental health needs. Implications for Counselor Educators and Supervisors for promoting collaboration as a standard of care are provided
