Changes in the Correct Response Rate in Grammar Tests among Japanese Learners Studying in Japan: A Study of International Students at a Japanese University

    Get PDF
In this study, 44 native Chinese speakers (hereinafter referred to as “Chinese NS”) and 13 native Korean speakers (hereinafter referred to as “Korean NS”) who were studying at the undergraduate level in a Japanese university were tested on their grammatical and lexical knowledge of Japanese (based on levels N5-N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test), thrice, at regular intervals in order to investigate how the total rate of correct answers and the correct answer rate by difficulty level changed, and whether the patterns in the changes differed according to the native language of the learner. As a result, in terms of the total correct answer rate, for Chinese NS, a U-shaped result was observed across tests 1, 2, and 3, whereas for Korean NS, the scores grew progressively higher across tests 1, 2, and 3. In addition, looking at correct answer rate by the difficulty level of the questions, for Chinese NS, a U-shaped curve was observed in the N4 and N5 levels, while the scores were highest in test 3 of the N2 and N1 levels. Among Korean NS, the only level in which the highest scores were observed in test 3 was for the N4 level.departmental bulletin pape

Multilingualism and Plurilingualism at Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies: the Educational Context from the Perspective of Classroom Practice

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to consider the ‘physical space’ at NUFS as a cultural context of education and to review our teaching practices within it. It is a based on the assumption that the way in which the teachers conduct their classes can reflect an expression of how they perceive and interpret the pedagogical space and its related phenomena in the classroom. If it can be considered that society and culture are created when the various subjective meanings of each teacher are integrated and shared (Blumer, 1969), it is possible to see our daily events from the inside and outside the classroom by verbalizing them and to see what kind of meanings we assign them. This will help us to understand the current educational culture of our university. The three reports on the teaching practice of English, Chinese, and German are reviewed, followed by a look at some aspects of teaching practice from the perspective of plurilingualism. The campus environment is also considered in order to discover what kind of education is appropriate to the educational culture of our university. As a result of this review, it is hoped that it will help to clarify the elements that could make it possible to have a language education based on Plurilingualism (a multi-lingual environment on campus, the students’ positive image of learning foreign languages, closer relationships between students and between students and teachers, etc.) which have already existed on campus and how we structuralize them.第2章は英語。departmental bulletin pape

Chinese Ship Import Painting and Calligraphic Works Table in the Nagasaki Port of the Edo Era

    Get PDF
There have been several studies about the painters who arrived in Nagasaki in the Edo period on Chinese ships, but no systematic research has yet been carried out on what was drawn and how many paintings were imported on Chinese ships. There is a large number of Chinese paintings in Japan, and the "Japanese section" of the "General Catalogue of Chinese Painting" edited by the Institute of Oriental Culture, University of Tokyo, has the most extensive collection of examples. However, in order to get a complete picture of the Chinese paintings that were brought to Nagasaki, it is necessary to exclude the paintings that were not brought to Japan via Nagasaki as well as those that were collected in the modern period. In addition, it is essential to carefully search the relevant references to the paintings from the remaining trade documents, art histories, essay collections and exhibition catalogues in Nagasaki. In this paper, I have compiled a list of Chinese paintings imported to Nagasaki during the Edo period using both Japanese and Chinese historical documents based on the research of Nagazumi Yoko, who compiled information on Chinese paintings brought to Nagasaki based on Dutch historical documents.departmental bulletin pape

Activities in Gunma Prefecture to Award the Dutch-Japanese Interpreter INABE Ichigoro

    Get PDF
Ichigoro Inabe (1786-1840), a Dutch -Japanese interpreter, had been accused of handing over prohibited items such as maps of Japan to Siebold in the 1828 Siebold Incident. As a result, he was sentenced to lifelong imprisonment to be served at the Nanokaichi clan of Kozuke. In 1840, Inabe suffered from dysentery in Nanokaichi and died at the age of 55. However, since 1926, commendation activities have been carried out in Gunma Prefecture, led by the Gunma Medical Association. In 1931, postcards of related historic sites were published, and a memorial monument was erected. In the commendation process, Inabe was treated as a symbolic figure who had laid the foundation for medical development in Nanokaichi, in spite of the fact that he was a "sinner" who had been sentenced to imprisonment. This paper, will focus on the difference in the evaluation of Inabe based on historical materials written in the 19th Century and of the later evaluation as surmised from the proposal prepared by the medical association in Gunma prefecture, which led to the commendation activities. Through this comparison, it becomes clear why Inabe received an award in Gunma which is far from his hometown of Nagasaki, and what significance the commendation activities had for the people of Gunma.departmental bulletin pape

Positional Tendencies of Illustrated Faces in EFL Textbooks

    Get PDF
This paper examines positional tendencies for illustrated depictions of faces found in fourteen Japanese EFL elementary textbooks. This analysis uncovered significant differences in how these images tend to manifest on the left- and right-hand sides of two-page spreads. It is argued that this may reflect different presentational strategies employed by textbook publishers for the early and late stages of a lesson and that this apparent systematicity may suggest some form of “visual grammar” that constrains how pedagogic images tend to be positioned. departmental bulletin pape
