departmental bulletin pape
In 1859, when the ports were opened under the Ansei Treaties, missionary G.F. Verbeck, who lived in the city rather than in the foreign settlement in Nagasaki, became one of the few foreigners to interact with townspeople of various social classes. Despite the restrictions on Christian missionary work, his study of Japanese and his teaching of English, along with his introduction of foreign cultures and civilizations, gained a reputation, attracting many students from across the country. Among these students were those who later became key figures in the Meiji Restoration government. On their recommendation, he was invited to teach at University South School (now the University of Tokyo) and to serve as an advisor to the government.
This research report uses Verbeck's letters and Verbeck of Japan written by W.E. Griffis, whom Verbeck invited to Japan, as the main sources. It examines Verbeck's interactions with the teachers and students of the language schools in Nagasaki, which were
established by the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Saga Domain , as well as with the people who visited his residences. These experiences led to the achievements of Teacher Verbeck, a generalist who was needed and highly regarded at that time.othe

This paper discusses current trends of Japanese language education on higher education in Indonesia and needs for human resources of the Japanese companies in Indonesia. First, in addition to verifying and examining the issues and hypotheses found in Kotorii and Matsumoto (2021), which is positioned as a preliminary survey prior to this survey, further interviews were conducted on the status of local high Japanese education and the human resources required by local Japanese companies. Second, as a result of the investigation, it was confirmed that Japanese companies are focusing on education and training after hiring, and it was also confirmed that some new moves are being made on the university side. In a nutshell, it is the fact that the "movement to develop 'practical ability' more strongly in higher education" in the aforementioned "hypothesis" is becoming more concrete and realized, and the situation that "emphasis is placed on the development of 'Japanese ability' as represented by passing the Japanese ability test" is changing, albeit little by little. Specifically, it is an example of Gadjah Mada University, where the D3 program has become a "professional faculty" as a D4 program, and the other is the recent trend that work-conscious education (specifically, internship program) in the form of "Kampus Merdeka" is also introduced in the S1 program.
In other words, even in the diploma program "Professional Faculty" (D4) and the traditional university faculties (S1) where the Kampus Merdeka movement is being promoted, what you acquire there must not be Japanese skills in a narrow sense, but "abilities" that will lead to future work Japanese. It is necessary to educate such abilities through Japanese classes. Specific methodologies for this purpose need to be practiced and researched over time in the future.departmental bulletin pape
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between English proficiency, Japanese reading comprehension, and working memory capacity of Japanese learners of English. Participants were 20 Japanese university students, and they were asked to take a Reading Skill Test to measure their reading comprehension in Japanese and a Reading Span Test (RST) to measure their working memory capacity. The study used TOEIC IP (L+R) scores as a measure of English proficiency. The findings revealed that there was no statistically significant relation between TOEIC IP (L+R) scores, the Reading Skill Test, and the RST. However, there was found to be a statistically significant correlation between the RST and two items (Dependency Analysis and Anaphora Resolution) on the Reading Skill Test.

Local newspapers significantly impact the people of a prefecture, influencing multiculturalism and the future acquisition of international students. This study aimed to identify international students published in a local newspaper, Nagasakishimbun , in 2020— the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We used text mining to analyze 66 articles. The results of the co-occurrence network analysis showed that local newspapers recognized the presence of international students in the prefecture as a target to report on and that international student policies were communicated in relation to the local communities of Nagasaki City, Sasebo City, Isahaya City, and Goto City. Although educational institutions play a significant role in supporting international students, the articles were unique in their coverage of certain issues. The articles also showed that support for international students was provided not only by educational institutions but also by local governments and citizens on various scales and levels. Future longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether these reports have triggered further support from the county residents.departmental bulletin pape
