Comparative Study of Participatory Social Development in Southeast Asian Countries (2) : From Some Cases of Indonesia
Get PDFIn this article we will try some comparative studies of social development in Southeast Asia. Today, the term "social development" has come to gain a high reputation in the development industry and the field of international cooperation. Because of its high possibility and sustainability, participatory style of social development is becoming the mainstream method in the practice of development in the third world. But, insteadof its value and effectiveness, systematic case study has rarely been done since when this method began to be well known in the world of development study. In this article, as a second part of a series of comparative study that the present author is preparing, some cases of NGO's activities in the field of social development in Indonesia are examined. First, a case of Dinamika Indonesia Foundation, a local NGO in Indonesia, is taken as an example to show the difficulty of assisting the urban poor who are making their living in the scavengers'work. Second, IPD ( Institute Pembaharuan Desa), a local NGO in Indonesia, is shown as a case of supporting fisherman's community that is facing the environmental and economic problems. Third, RDA (Rural Development Action),a local NGO in Indonesia, and fourth, LIFE (Live with Friends on the Earth), a Japanese NGO, both of them are shown as good examples in the field of sustainable rural development. After examining such cases above in some detail and comparing briefly with Cambodian cases taken in a preceding article, we will present theoutline of more general implications of the effectiveness and the limitations of participatory social developmentat the conclusion of this article.departmental bulletin pape
The problems when non-native learners learn classical Japanese grammar : Analyzing the mistake of translation from classical Japanese into modern Japanese
Get PDFIn this paper, I analyze the mistake of non-native learners' translation from classical Japanese into modern Japanese to investigate a point to keep in mind in the guidance about the classical Japanese. As a result, the following characteristic became clear : (i) When the learner translate from classical Japanese into modern Japanese, they make a lot of mistake; (ii) The mistake can be classified into things about the classical Japanese, about the modern Japanese, and about politeness expression. And it can be classified in the plural lower items more each.; (iii) There are many mistakes about the auxiliary verb. It is because the recognition of an auxiliary verb being an object of the translation is insufficient; (iv) The learner is careful to only the understanding of classical Japanese. Therefore they often make rudimentary mistake of modern Japanese when they translate it into modern Japanese.; (v) The learner stops translation on the way. 9.11 Terrorist Attacks and Restoration of the Plenary Power : Doctrine in the U.S. Immigration Laws
Get PDFThe September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks resulted in significant changes in the U.S. immigration law and policy. Six weeks later, Congress passed the USA Patriot Act to improve national security. Also in November 2002, Congress passed the Homeland Security Act, which abolished the Immigration and Naturalization Service and transferred most immigration functions to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Following the attacks, the U.S. Government carried out extensive investigations that targeted thousands of non-citizens, primarily from Arab and Muslim backgrounds. This article is at aiming to find how 9.11 terrorist attacks influenced the alien's right not to be removed from the United States without due process of law. First, Part I will demonstrate the relationship between the deportation system in immigration law and the alien enemies, introducing the Alien Enemy Act of 1798 and Ludecke v. Watkins the (1948) with historical views. Part II will introduce the 1996 immigration laws and the USA Patriot Act of 2001, criticizing the discriminative treatments of Arab and Muslim aliens by the Government. Part III will analyze Demore v. Kim (2003), Clark v. Martinez (2005), and Jama v. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (2005) to examine whether the plenary power doctrine over immigration matters restored after 9.11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. immigration laws. Part IV will point out the Supreme Court's basic attitude regarding immigration and national security. Finally, this article concludes that the terrorist attacks restored the plenary power doctrine on immigration matters, but Supreme Court will continue to base their judgements strictly on past immigration case precedents, except in the case of alien terrorists. The paper argues that extensive reading is the key to address the difficulties brought by mixed level students in the university English reading class. It consists of two parts. The second half explores the method of extensive reading by using a number of English books written in easy English language, such as graded books or leveled books.
