The Significance of Phraseology : its Outline and Educational Application
This paper discusses the following three points: (1) the outline of phraseology, (2) an introduction to phraseological studies in Japan and abroad, and (3) a proposal to introduce phraseological viewpoints to English education in Japan. Recently, much attention has been paid to phraseology because phrases play important roles in first and second language acquisition. Phraseology is regarded to have been established as an area of linguistics in the late 20th century, but actually, it has a long history. This paper explains its outline from the historical perspective in Japan and abroad and introduces some phraseological studies which adopt top-down and bottom-up approaches. Lastly, I will examine how effective it is to teach phrases to college students by means of teaching materials. The materials for learning useful phrases used in class seem to have helped improve students English writing proficiency. I will show how students' writing proficiency improved in my writing class and I will try to show how phraseology can help improve English learners' proficiency.departmental bulletin pape

Comparative Study of Participatory Social Development in Southeast Asian Countries (1) : From Some Cases of Cambodia
From this article we will try to start some comparative studies of social development in Southeast Asia. Today, the term "social development" has come to gain a high reputation in the development industry and the field of international cooperation. Because of its high possibility and sustainability, participatory style of social development is becoming the mainstream method in the practice of development in the third world. But, instead of its value and effectiveness, systematic case study has rarely been done since when this method began to be well known in the world of development study. In this article, as a starting part of a series of comparative study that the present author is preparing, some cases of NGO's activities in the field of social development in Cambodia are to be examined. First, a case of SFODA (Sacrifice Families and Orphans Development Association), a local NGO in Cambodia, is taken as an example to show the problem of the scarcity of funds in a small NGO. Second, JVC (Japan International Volunteer Center) a Japanese NGO in Cambodia, is shown as a good case of sustainable rural development. Third, LCJ (Leucaena Communication Japonesia), also a Japanese NGO, is another good example in the field of sustainable rural development. Fourth, IKTT (Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles), managed by a former Japanese traditional textile artisan, Kikuo Morimoto, is shown as a rare case of trial for reconstructing the traditional Cambodian textiles and rural environment at the same time. In all of their activities, we can see the effectiveness and the limitations of social development as well. We will present the outline of more general implications at the forthcoming article.departmental bulletin pape
An Experimental Study on the Effectiveness of Focus on Form : With an Analysis of Learners' L1 Transfer
The purpose of the present research is to demonstrate that L1 transfer in the syntacticization of early Japanese learners of L2 English is essentially related to the development of writing skills. The research shows the following: First, transfer from Japanese in EFL learners' written English appears in nine different categories and takes on different patterns in each of four different groups of students, signifying the fact that all the categories found in the current study are almost identical with those found in previous studies on the L2 English of Japanese university students. Second, L1 transfer in the high proficiency groups is shifted from direct transfer to more diversified types, as the learners are challenged to construct more difficult, complex sentences. However, the transfer in the low proficiency groups is distinguished by the dominance of literal translation and anomalous use of copula, which continue to remain trouble spots in the course of study. Third, the groups that received form-focused training has statistically shown advancement in the area of syntax. The results also suggest that some of the factors found in this study can become the key to proficiency in writing.departmental bulletin pape
A Theory of Syntactic Predicational Operators Applied on the Configuration of Arguments
Applying the Theory of Syntactic Predicational Operators, this thesis depicts new formulae of the configuration of nominal arguments involving numerations of syntactic features. This thesis proposes that nominal phrases are also formed by the numeric resolutions of Syntactic Operations, in which a set of three novel features are the key factors. These three features behave like the three primary colors of paints and determine the transparency of nominal arguments from predicates.departmental bulletin pape
'Other habits' and 'other places' : Ninagawa's Twelfth Night
departmental bulletin pape
An Analysis of Dative Alternation in Jackendoff's Language Model of the Tripartite Parallel Architecture
This paper aims at making an analysis of Dative Alternation within the framework of the linguistic theory proposed by Jackendoff (1997, 2002, others). After reviewing generative approaches to Dative Alternation, this paper focuses on semantic differences between Dative Construction and Double Object Construction and proposes an appropriate lexical semantic representation for each construction and the verbs concerning Dative Alternation such as give, send, buy, make, etc. It is concluded that Dative Construction and Double Object Construction are related by a semantic inference rule and that the grammaticality of the both constructions is licensed by a compositional interpretation rule and/or concerning verbs' syntactic/semantic features. Finally a tentative suggestion will be made on the cause of the difference between an English Dative Alternation expression and its Japanese equivalent expression with a compound verb, based on the linguistic structure assumed by Jackendoff.departmental bulletin pape
Conditions and Issues of Rehabilitation Assistance in Aceh
In this paper, we examine conditions and issues of rehabilitation assistance in Aceh of Indonesia. On Dec. 26, 2004, big tsunami had attacked the northern coastal area of Sumatra, especially Aceh. About 130, 000 people have died of this disaster. Though this incident was terrible, it took an important pan to open the door of the problem of secret war in Aceh. In Aceh, fierce fight had been fought between Indonesian national army and GAM (free movement for Acehnese independence) since 1970s. Because of this fight, many people in Aceh had suffered from serious violation of human rights by the army. But after tsunami, this situation had rather changed. When many international NGOs, GOs and UN organizations entered Aceh, Indonesian government could not conceal the real situation of Aceh. Though much assistance was practiced after tsunami, there remained some difficult problems to be overcome. We will try to point out each of these matters in some details, and propose an idea for the realization of the peaceful future of Aceh.departmental bulletin pape
