This study examines the translation of ladylike expressions used by reincarnated villainesses in the manga, applying Skopos theory to highlight the importance of translation purpose and audience. The research explores how effectively translations convey the social context and nuances of the source text (ST) in the target text (TT) and assesses the implications of these translation challenges for the use of manga as language learning materials. The analysis identifies significant difficulties, such as the absence of direct equivalents for Japanese honorifics and sentence-ending particles in English, which often result in the loss of politeness and elegance. Moreover, passive constructions in Japanese frequently transform into active ones in English, and sentences need to be shortened to fit within manga speech bubbles. The cultural specificity of ladylike speech, which reflects social hierarchies and relationships, poses further challenges for accurate translation. Despite these challenges, manga translations can serve as valuable language-learning tools. They provide Japanese learners with cultural immersion and offer English learners insights into language structure. However, effective educational use of manga translations requires supplementary materials and explanations to address the inherent difficulties in conveying cultural and linguistic nuances.departmental bulletin pape

This study used the ‘Fundamental Economics Vocabulary for International Students’ by Komiya (2014) to investigate the understanding of these vocabulary items for Vietnamese and Korean students, compared with the results for Japanese and Chinese students obtained by Shigeta, Nakahara, and Mori (2016). First, we examined which vocabulary items are inadequately understood and frequently misread by Korean and Vietnamese students. When comparing students from the four countries, a different trend was observed among Korean students. For Korean students, few katakana words appeared in their low comprehension vocabulary, whereas many appeared in their high comprehension vocabulary. In contrast, students from the other three countries had many katakana words in their low comprehension vocabulary and many two-character kanji words in their high comprehension vocabulary. In addition, the high comprehension vocabulary for Korean students consists of words in the ‘politics and economics’, while students from other countries tend to have more words in the ‘civics’. When it comes to reading kanji, mistakes such as the ‘s’ and ‘k’ sounds and similar-looking kanji were typical of Korean students. We also found that words challenging for Japanese students are similarly difficult for international students. Words with difficult to read kanji are often inadequately understood. Many of the words that Vietnamese students have difficulty with, and for which they provide incorrect kanji answers, overlap with those of Chinese or Korean students. Additionally, both Chinese and Vietnamese students frequently have low comprehension of words related to ‘market and price’ as well as ‘business’. If courses and instruction are designed based on these findings, it will be possible to create more effective Economics and Japanese language classes.departmental bulletin pape

This paper examines articles about international students in local newspapers during the onset of COVID-19 in 2020, based on the study by Haruguchi and Yamamoto (2023). The newspapers surveyed were Gifu Shimbun and Niigata Nippo. These newspapers were chosen due to the similar number of international students in Gifu, Niigata, and Nagasaki prefectures, making them suitable for comparison. The study identified common themes and differences in the articles using text-mining techniques. The analysis revealed that all three newspapers focused primarily on support for international students during the pandemic, with prefectural and city-level initiatives. Additionally, there was significant interest in local and national universities, highlighting the importance of universities in the community and their role in supporting international students. Notably, Nagasaki Shimbun emphasized educational institutions but mentioned businesses sparingly. Furthermore, it highlighted peace education for international students, reflecting Nagasaki's unique historical background and its emphasis on peace education. The findings suggest that during the COVID-19 pandemic, all three newspapers played a crucial role in shaping the perceptions and policies of the local population regarding support for international students. This paper underscores the significant influence of local media in addressing the challenges faced by international students and highlights the role of the media in supporting local communities during crises.departmental bulletin pape
