departmental bulletin pape

Fostering Media Literacy in the Japanese Lesson: Using Video Clips from Youtube

    Get PDF
In recent years, Japanese language education has changed from fostering communicative competence to fostering an increase in literacy. This study is a practical article discussing a Japanese lesson that the author performed as an introduction to media literacy education, as conducted at a Korean university in 2009. This class does not have any study assignments or set lesson plans. This paper attempts to investigate what the students learn through such lessons by analysis of the data from the students' self-reflection essays. The following points are suggested:(1) More than 80% of students became aware of what Media Literacy was even though they could not understand the standard reading task "Introduction to Media Literacy".(2) Some students gained an understanding of "self-direction" which is very important for contact with media.(3) Through self-reflection, some students became aware of their own knowledge gaps that they had prior to this class.departmental bulletin pape

A Preliminary Essay on Fair Trade: From a Viewpoint of Comparison with Development Assistance

    Get PDF
In this essay we will try to examine some aspects of fair trade in comparison with development assistance. First, a definition and development of fair trade is shown and its characteristics are demonstrated. Fair trade is a trade partnership bound for the realization of fairer international trade. In particular, it contributes to the conservation of producers' and workers' rights in developing countries and offers them better conditions for trade. Fair trade has a relatively long history in Europe and other developed countries, and several stakeholders such as producers and workers, fair trade organizations, companies, and consumers are involved. Second, some effects and limitations of fair trade are explicated and its possibilities and inherent problems are analyzed in comparison with development assistance. Fair trade has some advantages compared with development assistance. Because it is basically trading activity, fair trade can permeate wider social spheres than development assistance, such as producers' and workers' communities in developing countries, NGOs and corporations, and consumers' society in developed countries. On the other hand, fair trade has some limitations because its share in the world trade is still very small by now. Nevertheless, we must say that fair trade has great possibilities to transform unequal structures of world trade and make better future of global society. At the conclusion of this essay, we will give some implications extracted from these enterprises. We should not forget that fair trade is as much a social movement as an economic activity, and we should make continuous effort to realize that goal.departmental bulletin pape

Conflict in the Cross-cultural Communication Process: A Process of Fostering the Literacy of Interpersonal Culture

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to analyze how the literacy of interpersonal culture is cultivated through interaction with others. In this paper we follow the idea of the literacy of interpersonal culture (Hosokawa 2007) and we define that the process of cultural understanding is a search for one's interpersonal culture through communication. To clarify the process of cultural understanding, we analyzed the interchange between Japanese and Korean students on an internet bulletin board. The results of the analysis were as follows: (i) Conflict is a necessary factor to cultivate the literacy of interpersonal culture; (ii) True understanding is brought out if people take a flexible attitude towards others after experiencing conflict; (iii) True understanding involves not only understanding others but also self-understanding; (iv) Exchanging information which exists out of communication does not lead to true understanding.departmental bulletin pape

Matsumoto Seicho's Saigo-Satsu Writing fiction as Escapism A Critical Biography of Matsumoto Seicho, 1949 to 1951

    Get PDF
Matsumoto Kiyoharu worked as a commercial artist for the newspaper Asahi from 1937 to 1957, after which he devoted himself to the writing from his early forties and he adopted the pseudonym Matsumoto Seicho. His earliest work Saigo-Satsu was written when he was still working at The Asahi Shimbun in Kokura, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The reason why he began writing his first novel Saigo-Satsu was that he wanted to escape from reality. It won the third prize of a contest in 1950 and it was nominated for the Naoki literary award. In this paper, the author describes the social description from 1949 to 1951 and analyzes his first three novels, Saigo-Satsu, Kagero, and Kuruma-Yado. According to the analysis, he is said to have already established his own style when he began writing novels.departmental bulletin pape

An Introduction to Contrastive Analysis Between Bulgarian Past Passive Participles and Japanese

    Get PDF
This paper is an introduction of discussing the past passive participles in Bulgarian language and the corresponding Japanese expressions. In Bulgarian language, teachers may explain these participles in class as "past"and "passive" In Japanese language, these meanings are expressed with rareteiru, teiru, tearu, and so on. In such a case, the teacher's explanation would confuse the learners. Many language teachers who follow the direct method might create the same situation in their teaching. I do appreciate the direct method and would continue to follow it. However, if language teachers hold some contrastive viewpoints between languages, it would be very useful for their teaching. This would thus be beneficial not only for the learners of a language, but also for the improvement of the teachers themselves.departmental bulletin pape
