The Teaching of Interpreting in the Context of College Education: Its Purpose and Rationale
Get PDFConsecutive interpreting (CI) has long been neglected in interpreting teaching for reasons which have littleto do with any considered pedagogic principle. The main argument for reassessing the role of CI in languageteaching is that CI is basically a meta-linguistic task since it is a process that necessarily requires one to gobeyond the linguistic level of understanding and communication and, therefore, is one of the most effectiveways of nurturing language learners' meta-linguistic awareness. To illustrate this claim, this paper introducesnote-taking analysis in Japanese, or their mother tongue, to enhance the student's meta-linguistic awareness.This procedure can be restated as students' tendency of their failing at moving from "BICS" (Basic InterpersonalCommunicative Skills) to "CALP" (Cognitive/Academic Language Proficiency) in the words of Cummins (1980,1991a, 1991b). This paper proposes how students' self-analysis of their note-taking in their mother tongue notonly enhances their meta-linguistic awareness, but also accelerates the shift to "CALP."departmental bulletin pape

The Idea and the Reality of Ecotourism: In Search of Reconcilability of Conversation and Development
Get PDFIn this essay we will try to examine some aspects of ecotourism from the viewpoint of reconcilability ofconservation and development. First, a definition and development of ecotourism is shown and its characteristics are demonstrated. Ecotourismis a kind of tourism bound for the realization of the conservation of natural environment and the sustainabledevelopment. This objective gave ecotourism its unique character in comparison with other types of tourism.As an example of this, an ecotour in Borneo is examined in detail. Second, some effects and limitations of ecotourism are explicated and its possibilities and inherent problemsare analyzed from the viewpoint of reconcilability of conservation and development. Ecotourism hassome advantages in the realization of this aim. Because it is basically a type of tourism, ecotourism can involvewider social spheres than other types of conservation activities and development assistances, such as local communitiesin developing countries, NGOs or corporations, and naturalist societies or individuals in developedcountries. On the other hand, ecotourism has some limitations because its share in the world tourism is still verysmall by now. And furthermore we must say that it is essentially difficult task because of its contradictory naturein the reconcilability of conservation and development. In order to realize this task, we need some time andefforts in many ways. Nevertheless, we must say that ecotourism has great possibilities to transform unequalstructures of world tourism and make better future of global society. At the conclusion of this essay, we will give some implications extracted from these enterprises. We shouldnot forget that ecotourism is as much a social movement as an economic activity, and we should make continuouseffort to realize that goal.departmental bulletin pape

A Study of the Nature of Sentence-Based Listening
Get PDF文レベルのリスニングの特徴を理解するための調査を日本人英語学習者を対象に行った。文レベルのリスニングとして、パーシャルディクテーションと文に含まれる音声/ 文法/ 意味上の間違いを認識するリスニングタスクを用い、それぞれのパフォーマンス及び総合的リスニング能力との関係を調べた。調査の結果、1)意味上の間違いを認識するリスニングタスクのパフォーマンスが相対的に高い、2)パーシャルディクテーションは総合的リスニング能力に最も深く関与している可能性が高い、3)音声/ 意味上の間違いを認識するリスニングタスクと総合的リスニング能力の間には非線形的な関係が認められる、4)総合的リスニング能力の43%は、パーシャルディクテーションの能力と音声/ 意味上の間違いを認識する能力で説明することができる、こと等が明らかにされている。departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFThis paper examines the Takashi Nagai's remarks on using atomic energy. Though he was among thevictims of the atomic bombing on Nagasaki, he recommended using atomic energy for peace, as he was anexpert in radiology. He was actually the first advocate for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, preceding U.S.President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who delivered the speech "Atoms for Peace" to the UN General Assemblyon December 8, 1953. Nagai's support for using atomic energy seems fitting considering the nuclear policy ofWashington and Tokyo at that time.
