Japanese Language Boom in Shanghai during 1930's to the early 1940's
Get PDFThis paper examines the boom in Japanese language education in the city of Shanghai during the 1930s and early 1940s. At a National Education Conference convened in 1928, it was decided that Japanese language education should be made mandatory at both normal schools and vocational schools in China. This resulted in a boom in Japanese language education in the city between 1928 and 1931. During the following decade, further booms occurred in three separate waves: 1932-1934, 1938-1939 and 1940-1942. This paper argues that there were various factors influencing the dramatic fluctuations in Japanese language educationʼs popularity in Shanghai during this time: Sino-Japanese relations, education policy, anti-Japanese movements and incidents, the private interests of individuals, and so forth. It concludes by stressing that Shanghaiʼs level of international influence made it a unique city within China at the time.departmental bulletin pape
South Korean Gender Order from the Perspective of Military Culture
Get PDFThis paper describes the South Korean gender order from the point of view of military culture. At the conclusion of the Cold War, South Korea joined the other developed nations of the world, and North Korea had an overwhelming difference of national power. Under these conditions, why would South Korea feel the need to maintain military conscription? This paper proposes that the reason for this is to maintain the gender order. In other words, by experiencing military service and duty, men are able to obtain hegemony. However, men who had completed military service as an alternative military duty service are unable to grasp this hegemony. They are the majority in terms that experienced military service, but the marginal person in terms that have no hegemony. Previous research on South Korean conscription did not focus on men from the alternative military duty service. Beyond the constructed male-female gender order, the people who experienced the alternative military duty service are constructing a new South Korean gender order.departmental bulletin pape
An Internship in Japanese Language Educational Establishment for Training Students to Be a Japanese Language Teacher: Focus on Approach and Effect
Get PDFThis thesis conducted a survey of what the effect of the international internship which was intended for Japanese language teachers to train in Japanese-language educational establishments. This program was carried out at a Chinese university that has a partnership agreement with a Japanese university. Students who took part in it observed a lot of classes as teaching assistants and organized an event to introduce Japanese culture to students learning Japanese in the university. According to the survey participants were satisfied with this internship and conscious survey proved that studentsʼ awareness was improved after the program. Moreover it is a valuable opportunity that many Japanese learners interact with native speakers such as the internship students. This time, the research makes clear that the internship has multiple benefits to both of universities. The Development and the Significance of the Fair Trade Town Movement in Japan : Especially the Case of Kumamoto City
Get PDFFirst, the definition of fair trade is explicated and the complementary nature of the two types of fair trade is explained. One is “Union” type, and the other is “Label” type. As these types are combined together, they are thought to contribute to the expansion of the fair trade market.
Second, the brief history of the fair trade town movement is described. Since the beginning of this movement in Garstang in England in April 2000, there are more than 1,400 fair trade towns all over the world in 2014. They are even now increasing in number.
Third, the goals and guidelines of fair trade towns are explicated. The fair trade town movement was born in England, so most of its goals and guidelines are based on English concepts, but some goals or guidelines are set individually by each country.
Fourth, the fair trade town movement in Japan and Kumamoto City is described in some detail. In Kumamoto City, the first fair trade town in Japan, a very active movement developed, and several towns in Japan, like Nagoya, Sapporo and Tokyo, are participating in this movement. Eventually, a network of fair
trade towns was established in Japan.
Fifth, the achievements and the significance of the movement are evaluated from social and cultural viewpoints, based on the case of Japan and Kumamoto City. The fair trade town movement is put in relation to the “re-localization” movement in general. Its significance is that it is a movement for sustainable development in each community linked in a local and global context.
In conclusion, we give some implications extracted from this movement. We should keep in mind that the fair trade town movement is as much a social reform movement as it is an economic activity, and we should change our minds fundamentally to realize this movementʼs goals.departmental bulletin pape
