Vocabulary Acquisition in the Foreign Language Classroom: Developing effective vocabulary-building programs for foreign language students

    Get PDF
Abstract Vocabulary acquisition is a critical component of language learning and, as such, should hold a central place in every foreign language classroom. However, teaching vocabulary properly is both difficult and timeconsuming, and so is often taught using randomly selected lexical items, which are taught incrementally and without sufficient structuring and reinforcement. The result is that students become frustrated and lose motivation. Moreover, the crucial component of student confidence is diminished which does, in fact, directly affect other areas of language competency. To combat this, and to achieve excellence in vocabulary-building, it is essential that instructors apply appropriate techniques to facilitate students’ rapid acquisition of new lexical items while ensuring long-term retention. This includes systematically selecting vocabulary to be taught by considering the academic needs and competency levels of the students, as well as explicit instruction in strategies that promote learner autonomy. This article aims to demonstrate methods for choosing vocabulary items, and ways to organize and implement vocabulary curricula. departmental bulletin pape

Students’ Attitudes Towards English Language Placement Tests

    Get PDF
Abstract The research on students of their post-English placement test attitudes has not been extensively explored; therefore, this paper aims to explore student’s attitudes towards placement test results. It also aims to gain an insight into how these results have influenced their general attitudes towards their studies within their assigned classes. 65 students responded to a questionnaire, using a Likert scale, that questioned their attitudes towards each of the classes for the four skills and grammar that they were placed into and whether they were content with their placement. The outcome of the research was that the surveyed population were content overall with their assigned classes, felt motivated to study and had positive feelings towards their classes and studies. However, it also highlighted that the number of those who agreed with their assigned class levels for receptive skills was much larger than those for productive skills. This means that slight amendments may need to be made to the testing process. departmental bulletin pape

Some Mistranslations from Manchu to Japanese in Honyaku Mango Sanhen

    Get PDF
Abstract During the mid-nineteenth century, Chinese translators in Nagasaki edited the Manchu-Japanese dictionary, Honyaku Mango Sanhen( 翻訳満語纂編). This dictionary presents each Manchu headword with a Chinese translation, and a definition rendered in both Manchu and Japanese. This paper discusses some mistranslations from Manchu to Japanese in the definition employed by the translators. Although there are individual differences, many mistranslations have arisen from a lack of understanding of the complex sentence structure, such as the relative clause and the coordinate clause in particular.departmental bulletin pape

The Advertising Use of <craving> as Expression by the First-person Subject

    Get PDF
Abstract Some commonly used Japanese expressions exhibit what the author calls advertisement-like nuances. These expressions often leave an impression of exaggeration because they are used in such a way that they are expected to convey something more than their lexical meanings. These expressions have undergone a commercialization process which gives them the functions of advertisement, exaggeration, and situation shift in the author’s terms. In this paper, the author pointed out that there was a characteristic modality form about ”desire” expressions by a first-person subject, used in the context of advertising and publicity. The usage of this form deviated from its general use, and, the analysis shows that a marketing strategy motivated this deviant usage.departmental bulletin pape
