Dismissal, Co-option, and Miscues: The Illusory Impact of the Colbert Report among the People, Politics, and Mainstream News Media
Get PDFDespite a narrow audience base, Stephen Colbert reached iconic status as host of the Colbert Report. Politically, however, he registered no meaningful nor long-lasting impact by any relevant metric--voter turnout, poll numbers, or policy shifts in the media or government. Comparative historical and content analysis will demonstrate how Colbert’s satirical and character code-switching undermined his effectiveness.

Get PDFUne des caractéristiques dans l’oeuvre d’Annie Ernaux est l’autofiction. Toutefois, l’objet du récit de l’autofiction ne se limite pas seulement aux thèmes familiaux comme dans Une femme mais s’étend sur le social hors du moi comme pour les voyageurs du RER dans Journal du dehors et La vie extérieure. Car à la différence du point de vue sociologique chez Bourdieu, l’écrivaine remarque l’importance du social saisi par l’intime ainsi que celle de l’intime provenant du social. Cette réciprocité entre l’intime et le social produit des émotions qui s’accompagnent de sensations. Cela est une stratégie particulière de son écriture. Dans cet article, nous envisageons le processus de la naissance d’une émotion provenant du social sous les trois aspects suivants : en premier, par l’insertion de mots sensuels, voire sexuels dans la description des personnages historiques, le narrateur rend ces personnages privés. En deuxième, par la narration sans subjectivité du narrateur au moyen du discours direct et de la juxtaposition d’actes de personnages inconnus, le narrateur s’approche du monde extérieur. Ces deux cas nous montrent une réduction de la distance entre l’intime et le social, ce qui produit l’émotion. Enfin, la mention des tableaux de femmes dans le texte montre non seulement la diminution de la distance entre les deux, mais aussi un des processus de création des oeuvres chez Ernaux. Par exemple, le « moi dédoublé » découvert par le narrateur dans le tableau de Tanning, se reproduit en tant que « moi multiple » dans une scène sociale chez Ernaux. C’est cette pluralité de moi, cette assimilation de l’autre, qui élargit la possibilité de l’autofiction d’Ernaux.departmental bulletin pape
Commercial Function of Vacabulary Used in Blurbs: Focusing on the use of chuumoku ‘attention’ in the titles of magazine articles
Get PDFSome commonly used Japanese expressions exhibit what the author calls commercial functions, in other words, advertisement-like nuances. These expressions often leave an impression of exaggeration because they are used in such a way that they are expected to convey something more than their lexical meanings. In this paper, the author attempts to describe the characteristics of these advertisement-like expressions through the analysis of the expression chuumoku, or “attention”, as they appear in the titles of magazine articles.
For this purpose the magazine article database Web-OYA and the analysis tool KH Corder were used. In terms of the qualitative investigation, the author analyzed individual examples by a method of critical discourse analysis. The results of the analysis suggest that meanings resulting from commercialization are present in the use of the expression chuumoku in the titles of magazine articles, same as the analysis of the expression wadai in Otani (2017).departmental bulletin pape

The Possessive Expressions “X (person) ga aru / iru”: A survey of usage data in novels from the Meiji period until today

When it comes to the differences between the usage of the Japanese verbs ‘aru’ and ‘iru’, people generally think that ‘aru’ is used for non-living things, whereas ‘iru’ is limited for living things. But to make things more complicated, we can also use ‘aru’ and ‘iru’ for possessive expressions.
This paper discusses the different usage of ‘aru’ and ‘iru’ its meaning and usage in possessive expressions.
Analyzing novels, some light will be shed on the diachronical changes of usage of ‘aru’ and ‘iru’ since the Meiji period.
My research will show that there are some decisive factors governing the use of ‘aru’ and ‘iru’ depending on the closeness between the involved speakers and that these factors have changed over time. During the Meiji period the usage of ‘aru’ and ‘iru’ was interchanging, while nowadays possessive expressions show a preference for ‘iru’.departmental bulletin pape
Reconsidering the Role of ’Employed Foreigners’ in the Joint Venture between Japan and Britain in Early Takashima Colliery: An analytical view into the World Heritage of ”Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution”

‘Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution, Iron, Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal’ was recognized as World Heritage site by the UNESCO in May 2015. It had been chosen for having outstanding universal value, because it is a successful case of industrial revolution in a non- western country.
It cleared two of the criteria of the World Heritage standards, the first one concerning the communication of values and the second one concerning the aggregation of historical architecture in line with the rules of ICOMOS. But it did not clear the third criterion concerning the transmission of traditional culture like ‘Bushido’, the Japanese martial spirit. So this paper will question the actual and historical traditional culture which past the industrial revolution in the case of the Takashima Colliery which was jointly governed by foreign trading companies and the Saga Clan. Firstly it reflects the history of coal mining in Saga. Secondly it questions the cooperation between British engineers and Japanese craftsmen as their students, as well as the financial side and market factors in the joint venture of Glover Messer. & Saga Clan, Japan’s first joint enterprise. The revolutionary role of professional mining engineer Frederic Potter and his life at the Nagasaki foreign settlement will be finally examined partly using photographs. Considering the significance of early modern Dutch Studies and Western Learning at Saga Clan which laid the foundation of the industrial revolution at the Takashima Colliery will conclude this paper.departmental bulletin pape
