The Effect of the Output Form on Japanese Kanji Noun Production by Japanese Learners: A Comparison of Learners from Kanji Backgrounds and Non-Kanji Backgrounds
Get PDFNowadays it is very rare to use typing as a way of learning in Kanji education. However, the learners who come to Japan as international students are often required to type their reports or papers in Japanese. Although knowledge of Kanji from other Asian languages may help students to write and understand Japanese Kanji correctly, it will not aid them in typing as a knowledge of the Japanese phonological information is necessary in order to input intended Japanese text. The purposes of the present study is to examine whether learned Kanji vocabulary can be recalled correctly or not by comparing the results of three types of output tasks: typing tasks, Kanji hand-writing tasks and Hiragana hand-writing tasks, and whether the vocabulary that learners can hand-write correctly can also be correctly typed or not. The results showed that (1) without regard to participants’ native languages, the scores in the typing tasks and Hiragana handwriting tasks were higher to Kanji hand-writing tasks, (2) in the Kanji hand-writing tasks, the test scores of learners familiar with Kanji exceeded those of the learners from Non-Kanji backgrounds and (3) for the learners from Non-Kanji backgrounds, typing tasks and Hiragana hand-writing tasks were easier than Kanji hand-writing tasks. These results indicated that an alternative method of typing training is necessary for learners who are familiar with Kanji. Japanese Language Learner's Understanding of the‘N（Noun) no koto’
Get PDFThe Japanese grammar form ‘N (Noun) no koto’ is capable of being classified into an essential ‘no koto’ and an optional ‘no koto’ form, which makes it difficult for Japanese-language learners to correctly use it. In this study, 86 Japanese-language learners were surveyed about the use, the misuse, and understanding of the ‘N no koto’ function. The higher level of Japanese learners, the easier it was to understand the essential ‘no koto’ form; however, the optional ‘no koto’ was difficult regardless of language level. The optional ‘no koto’ which appears in copula sentence was especially difficult for learners as whether it is present or not the sentence is complete resulting in a large number discounting it. In addition, Korean speakers had difficulty with the use of ‘no koto’ and ‘koto’ as they used the former as the latter to refer to an attribute. However, For Chinese speakers, their
