Examinaion of Reading Instruction Using Literary Teaching Materials: Focusing on University English Learners’ Response
As is well known, in recent English language education, the Courses of Study call for “nurturing practical communication skills”, and there is a trend toward emphasizing communication. Within this trend, quite a few people have negative views regarding the use of literary materials in reading instruction. In fact, many of the leading teaching materials in university English education have shifted from literary works to newspaper articles. However, is it really the case that literary materials do not facilitate the “cultivation of communication skills” and are not suitable for reading instruction? Based on student course surveys, many students feel interested in story and it encourages them to study English or read other American literary works.othe
Early Movie Theatres in Nagasaki (3)
The first moving picture in Nagasaki was screened using the cinématographe method. The date and time was May 21, 1897(Meiji 30), and the place was within the Yasaka Shrine. Though the performance of plays in showhouses (misemono-goya) had been accepted by people in Nagasaki, the number of theatrical showhouses screening movies little by little increased as movies became popular after that. Gradually, the residents of Nagasaki came to prefer movies over plays.
This essay aims to clarify how movies become established in Nagasaki as people’s entertainment. This time it will be ranged from 1904 to 1905.othe
A Research on Teaching the Japanese Language and Recruitment Practices of Japanese Companies in Vietnam
With the increase and diversification of the number of Japanese language learners in Japan and abroad, the needs and learning methods of learners are being actively discussed in the field of Japanese language education. This situation is also the same for such education in the ASEAN region, especially for native Vietnamese speakers. On the other hand, it is difficult to say that students who have acquired Japanese language skills at higher education institutions in these regions are using their Japanese to participate in Japanese economic activities. To clarify the actual state of the connection between Japanese language education and career paths in the region, this study focuses on the exit strategy of such education at the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University, in Vietnam and the surrounding area, and the needs of Japanese companies seeking to utilize local human resources.departmental bulletin pape
A Study on Japanese Language Education and the Supply of Human Resources to Japanese Companies in Higher Education in Indonesia
This paper discusses Japanese language education in higher education institutions and the supply of human resources to Japanese companies in Indonesia. First, the current situation and issues of Japanese language education in Indonesian higher education institutions were examined. As a result, it became clear that the role of Japanese language education in Indonesian higher education today is to produce human resources with skills of “practical Japanese language skills that can be used in actual work”. However, even Indonesian university graduates have difficulty reaching the ideal of “practical Japanese ability”. This situation has not changed in ten years or more. Second, the characteristics and trends of the local human resource needs of Japanese companies in Indonesia were examined. It became clear that Japanese companies have recognized added value to excellent human resources with Japanese language skills at the practical level. However, the number of such human resources is limited. As a result, Japanese companies are looking for highly sought-after personnel with technical skills and management skills rather than Japanese language skills at this moment. Finally, issues related to Japanese language education at higher education institutions and its connectivity to local human resource needs of Japanese companies in Indonesia were considered. It was confirmed that there is clearly a discrepancy between the educational content and the target level of Japanese language proficiency at higher education institutions and the needs of advanced human resources who can also speak Japanese that Japanese companies are seeking. The elucidation of this point and proposal of solutions are the central questions of this study that has not been fully investigated in previous research so far.othe
Book Review: The Spirit and Practice of English Language Education— From Communication to American Literature
For a long time, English language teaching approaches have given greater priority to teaching fluency. It should be noted, though, that unorganized verbal practice deprives language learning of context, making any real development of communication skills impossible. The author argues that English language teaching should include skill-based instruction and an introduction to cultural practices( education, thought, and literature) since these are crucial to the overall development of the learners into well-rounded beings. This book challenges the current trends associated with the teaching of English language that are embedded in a culture of excessive demands for efficiency and a mentality of only learning the language at a superficial level.
othe
A Case Study on Rubric Evaluations as Formative Assessments: Focusing on self-assessment and peer-assessment by international students
This study discusses hypotheses from the results of self- and peer-assessment of presentations and speeches made by international students using rubric evaluation charts. Furthermore, it attempts to discuss the usage of rubric evaluation in classes. Analyzing data from the Japanese language classes held in the spring semester in the 2021 academic year revealed the following: 1) Numerous students had selfevaluation abilities from the beginning, but naturally, some did not; 2) Both students with low and high self-evaluation abilities adjust their self-evaluation through other students’ evaluations; and 3) For international students, the ability to understand the Japanese language is considered to significantly affect their ability to evaluate others. These results confirm the usefulness of rubric evaluations in self-evaluation. The importance of improving self-evaluation ability has also been discussed.departmental bulletin pape

Depictions of the Seminole Indians in Early 20th Century Florida Everglades Adventure Literature
The Florida Everglades has frequently captured the American imagination as a place of wonder, enchantment, and adventure. However, the Seminole Indians who were its inhabitants for many years have played a more problematic role in the American popular imagination. Through a close analysis of four examples of early 20th-century Everglades adventure literature, I will examine: (1) how descriptions of Seminole Indians used ideas of racial separation as means of promoting cultural superiority; (2) conversely, how similar ideas were used as a means of critiquing dominant American ideals, especially commercial expansionism and white racial superiority; and (3) how narratives offered the possibility for a more egalitarian relationship with Native Americans.
departmental bulletin pape
Practical Report of Support for an International Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Implications of providing Psychological support in a University Dormitory
It has been reported that the number of students with developmental disabilities enrolled in Japanese universities continues to increase every year, and the percentage of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder( ASD) is also high. However accurate surveys have not been conducted on international students with developmental disabilities such as ASD. In recent years, reports on female students with ASD have been increasing based on data from clinical trials in the fields of Psychiatry and Psycho-somatic Medicine. However, there are few studies of cases targeting international students with ASD who are studying in Japan. Therefore, when students diagnosed with ASD in their country faces difficulties while living in Japan in an environment different from their country, it is not yet clear what kind of support is appropriate. This paper focuses on daily life problems that occurred in a Japanese university dormitory and reports that it is effective to provide supports that encourages “self-understanding” for an international student with ASD. Furthermore, it is effective for the people around students with ASD to understand and cooperate with the provision of “reasonable accommodation” that is not a form of special treatment. The study also discusses the implications that emerged from this support practice.departmental bulletin pape
