A Longitudinal Study of Japanese Grammar and Vocabulary Test Scores for Learners of Japanese: Through the Case of International Students Studying at a Japanese University

    Get PDF
In this research, we conducted Japanese grammar and vocabulary tests in order to clarify how the Japanese language ability of Japanese learners who studied at a Japanese university changes during periods of studying abroad and its process. As a result, the grammar and vocabulary tests tended to show high scores after the second semester after admission/transfer, regardless of the level of Japanese ability. This tendency was found to be particularly strong in the vocabulary tests.departmental bulletin pape

The Influence of Overseas Experiences on Japanese University Students' Motivation for Learning a Second Language

    Get PDF
The impact of Japanese university students’ overseas experience for study (OE) on their motivation for learning a second language (L2) is a topic that has not been extensively researched. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the impact of an OE on the motivation for foreign language (FL) learning from a group of 51 Japanese university students. Namely, how their pre-OE motivational status encouraged by various cultural factors was compared to that of their post-OE status. The results indicated that their OE enhanced their L2 proficiency. There were significant improvements in their language ability post-OE as almost all moved to a higher CEFR-level rating. In addition, the initial non-preferred factors, such as “Listening to songs”, “Reading books, journals, and newspapers” and “Writing an essay” were more increasingly preferred by the participants for L2 learning as opposed to other factors, namely “Talking to foreigners” and “Watching movies or TV programs (entertainment)”, even though these placed higher points on verbal communication than that of literacy. Conclusively, the results showed students’ remarkable progress in L2 acquisition after OE. In addition, their motivation for L2 learning cultural factors related to listening, reading and writing, was remarkably enhanced after OE for entertainment and speaking, whereas the participants assume their progress in verbal communication increased. Therefore, a participant might have made an unconscious but greater effort to improve literacy skills using reading and writing during their overseas study. departmental bulletin pape

The Effectiveness of Multi-Sensony Approach for an International Student with Dyslexia: Solving Difficulties in Intermediate Level Japanese Reading Comprehension

    Get PDF
First, this paper examines existing literature and provides an overview of how international students with developmental and learning disabilities have garnered significant attention from researchers, as part of the increased interest in how diverse Japanese language learners can be. Subsequently, the kinds of difficulties faced by an international student with dyslexia in intermediate level Japanese reading classes at a Japanese university and the effectiveness of multi-sensory approach in overcoming these difficulties are examined. Finally, the reasons why this kind of support, which was unnecessary in beginner and earlyintermediate level classes, became imperative at an intermediate level are explored by examining the format, textbooks, and supplementary materials of the intermediate level class.departmental bulletin pape

On a function of telicity in the meaning of English progressive form

    Get PDF
The progressive form in English basically indicates a situation or an action is in progress. However, it does not always indicate the same meaning in every context. It has been pointed out that, in some cases, the meaning differs according to its aspectuality of a verb or a verb phrase. It has also been pointed out that the related nouns (such as subject or direct object) change its aspectual character of verb phrases. This paper examines the influence of telicity to the aspectuality of verbs or verb phrases and clarifies the following: when a verbal aspect is perfective and includes its end-point or goal due to the telicity, a progressive form indicates an ongoing situation toward the goal. In this case, end-point or goal is focused as a situational salience. On the other hand, when a verbal aspect is imperfective and has no end-point due to its atelicity, the progressive form indicates the situation that is continuously in progress for a certain period.departmental bulletin pape

What Kind of Japanese Language Skills Do Vietnamese Technical Intern Trainees Want to Acquire?: A Study Using the JITCO Japanese Check Sheet and JLPT Can-do List

    Get PDF
A questionnaire survey was conducted to clarify the Japanese proficiency that Vietnamese technical intern trainees want to acquire. The results demonstrated that although the trainees responded that they wanted to actively acquire Japanese related to work, they demonstrated insufficient motivation to acquire a Japanese proficiency necessary in daily social life. To motivate the trainees to learn Japanese, a satisfactory balance between Japanese in work situations and in daily life situations seems essential.departmental bulletin pape
