What is the Image of Ideal Teachers for Prospective Teachers?
The purpose of this study is to examine through open-ended questions how students who are in teacher training courses perceive what types of teachers are good or bad. Participants were 72 university students who were in either Japanese or English teacher training courses. The study identified high frequency words in students’ descriptions in open-ended questions using KH Coder and compared these descriptions with the ideal qualities of teachers in English or Japanese teaching training courses. The findings indicated that students in teacher training courses place emphasis on teachers’ attention to learners’ psychological factors in the descriptive contents of open-ended questions. This study implies that future teaching training courses should train prospective teachers who can actively engage in self-improvement in order to promote their pedagogical knowledge and skills as teachers.othe
Ishiguro’s Bombed Mary: Representation of Hibakusha in ‘A Strange and Sometimes Sadness’
Kazuo Ishiguro’ s first short novel, ‘A Strange and Sometimes Sadness’( 1980), is a story about Nagasaki and the atomic bomb victims, as is also more well-known A Pale View of Hills. This novel tells the story of a young student, Michiko, and her childhood friend, Yasuko. The climax of this work is a scene in which Yasuko, who will be killed by the atomic bomb on the following day, shows intense anguish on her face in the middle of a conversation with Michiko, as if Yasuko were trying to reveal to her friend a sudden premonition about her own destiny. After that, Michiko doesn’ t see Yasuko any more. However, she imagines Yasuko’ s face, twisted in suffering, as an omen of her unbelievable pain and agony. In this way, Ishiguro tries to express the suffering of Hibakusha without depicting the horror of the bombing itself. Yasuko and Michiko might be in the “Shingakko”( a school for studying theology) gardens, near Ishiguro’ s birthplace in Shin-Nakagawamachi, where the statue of Mary is looking down. Later, near the hypocenter the A-bombed statue of Mary in Urakami Cathedral was found and became a symbol of the Hibakusha in Nagasaki. Like Bombed Mary in the real Cathedral, Yasuko could be considered as representation in literature of the sufferings of A-bombed victims.departmental bulletin pape
A Practical Report: Teaching Integrated Studies Classes Focusing upon Cross-Cultural Values
This research note gives an overview of lectures for teaching integrated studies classes which focus upon cross-cultural values. It describes how such classes were conducted, in which the students were required to make a teaching plan based upon cross-cultural values. It has been found that cross-cultural values are something abstract and often “invisible”, and that the students are not familiar with them enough to make a good teaching plan employing them.othe
A Study on the Promotion of SDGs in the Fair Trade Movement in Japan: With A Focus on the Collaboration of SDGs and the Fair Trade Town Movement
This paper discusses the promotion of SDGs in the fair trade movement in Japan, focusing on the collaboration of the fair trade town movement and the SDGs. In recent years, fair trade towns have been born one after another in various parts of Japan as a powerful way to promote fair trade. In addition, the SDGs, international goals adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015 that are hoped to be achieved by 2030, comprise 17 goals, and fair trade is directly and indirectly involved in all of them. The fair trade town movement in Japan is also considered to be a practice closely related to the SDGs. If this is the case, what are the issues in the actual situation and initiatives? Chapter 2 discusses some previous studies on the relationship between the fair trade movement and the SDGs from a theoretical perspective. Chapter 3 discusses trends in the fair trade town movement and the promotion of the SDGs in Japan based on several reports and websites. Chapter 4 discusses issues related to the fair trade movement, the fair trade town movement, and the promotion of the SDGs in Japan. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the fair trade movement and the SDGs are closely related, that the fair trade town movement conforms to the objectives of the SDGs promotion project set out by the national and local governments, and that each municipality certified as a fair trade town has been selected as an SDGs Future City, and that the efforts of both fair trade and SDGs are synergistic in sustainable regional development and international contribution.othe
departmental bulletin pape
